Daily Readings from the USCCB“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” Mark 6:34The Twelve had just returned from going about the countryside preaching the Gospel. They were tired. Jesus, in His compassion, invites them to come away with Him to rest for a while. So they get in a boat to cross over to a deserted place. But when the people hear about this, they hurry on foot to the place that their boat was heading. So, when the boat arrives, there is a crowd awaiting them. Of course, Jesus does not get upset. He...

A slew of art galleries across New York City have been hit with anti-Israel graffiti and daubed with red paint - yet some gallery owners have controversially chosen to keep the attacks secret. Insiders are divided on whether to dismiss the perpetrators as a nuisance and ignore them, or decry what they see as rank antisemitism. Some gallery owners say that they don’t want to lend credibility to the vandals by publicizing the attacks, and still others say that as artists, it would be hypocritical to repress expression. The galleries range from small hipster operations on the Lower East Side...

Readers seem to be enjoying my posts on the Mann v. Steyn trial, so I’m going to continue with one more today. Meanwhile, the court does not hold trials on Fridays, so the proceeding has recessed for the weekend, to resume Monday morning. It’s likely that the trial will get very interesting next week, as the defendants present the heart of their case and as things wrap up. In the interim, I’ll provide some comments on the events yesterday, which was the 11th day of the trial. My previous post on Wednesday, January 31, was devoted mostly to the issue...

... The US military said the air strikes hit more than 85 targets inside Iraq and Syria targeting both the elite Quds force of Iran's Revolutionary Guards and affiliated militia groups. The US strikes in the west of Iraq killed at least 16 people, including civilians, Iraqi government spokesman Bassem al-Awadi said on Saturday. "The security of Iraq and the region will find itself on the brink of an abyss" because of the strikes, Awadi said in a statement, and denied "false allegations" that there had been "prior coordination" with Washington over the strikes. The US strikes overnight in eastern...

The slaughter of abortion and the disorder of the Sexual Revolution are, to borrow William Shakespeare’s phrase, “two yoke-devil’s sworn to either’s purpose,” working hand-in-hand to claim the lives of children for profit and claim the souls of men and women for Hell. Wholesale abortion is, of course, a direct result of the cultural disaster known as the Sexual Revolution: that revolution, no less horrific than France’s Reign of Terror, successfully connived the modern world to divorce sexual pleasure from its natural and glorious fruit, the generation of new life, paving the way for the calamitous march of abortion, widespread...

Billionaire X/Twitter owner Elon Musk claimed on Friday that President Joe Biden is trying to “get as many illegals in the country as possible” so he can create a “one-party state.” Reacting to an AP report which said Biden would “prioritize legal status for millions of immigrants,” Musk wrote: Biden’s strategy is very simple: 1. Get as many illegals in the country as possible. 2. Legalize them to create a permanent majority – a one-party state. That is why they are encouraging so much illegal immigration. Simple, yet effective. He added, “Here is the full text of the bill. It...

In my previous exposition, Ten Reasons Why a Christian Should Never Attend a Homosexual “Wedding,” I cataloged a series of arguments, painting a picture of how such events are an abomination in the eyes of God. The list, although somewhat extensive, only skimmed the surface of this deep-seated issue, which is rooted primarily in spiritual defilement, but also in societal moral decay. This discourse was intended as a guide for those navigating the precarious waters of familial and social pressures, offering a biblical perspective to stand against the tide. Each point, though briefly touched upon, is a doorway to a...

Amidst the unfolding year, concerns heighten over a looming financial crisis, with a potential bank failure on the horizon. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) proposes rule changes, including waiving margin requirements for major banks during periods of “high volatility,” sparking questions about the stability of the financial system. The specter of last year’s challenges resurfaces, with shares of $NYCB plummeting and regional banks experiencing a downturn. Notably, the financial sector is gripped by worries of a derivatives implosion, adding complexity to an already precarious situation. The ongoing decline in commercial property values, coupled with the exposure...

Remembering Fidel Castro as a social justice warrior or human rights advocate might be an easy way to get a black eye in Miami. Nevertheless, the fools are out there. This is what we are talking about: The students were told that Castro was “a figure whose impact on Cuba and the world is undeniable.” While that’s true, it’s not for positive contributions. The script conveniently omits that Castro’s reign was marked by human rights abuses, mass murders, and political suppression. Instead, he was applauded because he “challenged imperialistic influences.” “As the leader of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Castro...

A fire broke out in an oil refinery in southern Russia, 200 miles from the border with Ukraine, following a drone strike, local authorities have said. The blaze at the Lukoil site in Volgograd comes amid reports of Kyiv stepping up its targeting of energy facilities in Russia. Volgograd regional governor Andrey Bocharov said on Telegram that Russian air defenses and electronic warfare (EW) systems had "repelled a drone attack" in the region overnight on Friday. As a result, "one drone fell and set off a fire at the Volgograd oil refinery."

SAN ANTONIO – KSAT’s discovery of hundreds of emails and text messages between the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office and an Austin-based criminal justice reform group has revealed just how much of an influence the group had on the DA. Earlier this week, KSAT obtained more than 200 pages of conversations between the firm’s founder, District Attorney Joe Gonzales and First Assistant District Attorney Christian Henrickson — many of which involve specific cases and policies. KSAT obtained the records through an open records request. The Wren Collective’s website states it is a strategic advising firm made up of former public...

Instead, this is 2024, so the only shots being fired are right now on Facebook as Lynchburg prepares for city council elections — and a potentially party-defining choice for the Republican nominee for the Ward IV council seat. Over the past few weeks, city councilman Marty Misjuns has posted the following about fellow council member (and vice mayor) Chris Faraldi: We need principled leaders that are going to cast the right vote, every time, consistently. 2024 is going to be a great year to remove incompetent fraudsters at the ballot box. Why would someone respect a liar, and opportunist that...

After nearly six full days of debate, South Carolina’s Senate approved a Constitutional Carry bill on Thursday by a vote of 28-15, removing the last major hurdle for the state to become the 28th in the nation to recognize the right to bear arms without the need for a government-issued permission slip. The bill, which was already approved by the House last year, still needs to return to the lower chamber for a final concurrence vote since the Senate did amend the legislation before giving it their stamp of approval. The amendment would allow people 18 and older to carry...
