Why Are People In Denial That Urban America Is A Dystopian Hellscape? The first step to fixing a problem is admitting you have one, and a certain species of smug urban progressive won’t admit America’s cities are falling apart.Increasingly, the news is dominated by urban crime and other catastrophes in America’s cities. Several large cities, and notably every major city on the West Coast, are deeply unsafe, and this should be a source of national shame. There’s a constant flurry of eye-popping news in this regard, yet it’s nearly always followed by a chorus of Democratic politicians and leftist urbanites telling...

[Catholic Caucus] PERSPECTIVES FROM ROME: Understanding the Crisis and Where We Go from HereCatholic Identity Conference, Pittsburgh, September 30, 2023 IntroductionThanks largely to Covid, it’s been 6 years since I’ve had the honor of speaking at the CIC and as we know, much has changed since then.Except one thing: Pope Francis is still waging his revolution, and with more gusto than ever, resulting in ever deepening divisions, persecution from within and from the top, a pervading atmosphere of fear, the fostering of mediocrity and hypocrisy, and the looming threat of formal schism. “How long Lord?” has become the ever increasing...

Instead of a repeat of the “Roaring 20s” from a century ago, this decade is now looking more like a no-recession 1990s boom economy, according to UBS Global Wealth. For a brief patch in 2021, markets were awash with talk of another “Roaring 20s” playing out. But that bullishness faded as inflation climbed above 5% and the Federal Reserve pivoted away from talk of “transitory” inflation to warning of the risks of it becoming trenchant. Then came the rate shocks of 2022, which left the S&P 500 SPX with a 19.4% loss, its worst yearly losses since 2008. The roughly...

President Joe Biden’s Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen reverently welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping by applauding his arrival at the San Francisco Airport on Tuesday. [Catholic Caucus] In Defense of Bishop StricklandEmail from a Catholic Monitor reader: In Defense of Bishop StricklandThought you would appreciate this...To Whom It May Concern:Our apostles also knew, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that there would be strife on account of the office of the episcopate. For this reason, therefore, inasmuch as they had obtained a perfect fore-knowledge of this, they appointed those [ministers] already mentioned, and afterwards gave instructions, that when these should fall asleep, other approved men should succeed them in their ministry. We are of opinion, therefore, that those appointed by them, or afterwards by other eminent...
