James Cash Penney’s words are the embodiment of community minded free enterprise at its best. Penney was born in Hamilton, Missouri, on September 16, 1875. In 1902, he invested $2,000 with the owners of the Golden Rule chain of stores in a one-third partnership in a new Golden Rule store in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Wikipedia reports: "He participated in opening two more stores, and when Callahan and Johnson dissolved their partnership in 1907 he purchased full interest in all three stores. By 1912, there were 34 stores in the Rocky Mountain States. In 1913, he moved the company to the Kearns...

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), who is running for U.S. Senate, voted against legislation that would bar states from capping the sale of gas-fueled cars; one of the main drivers of the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike is President Joe Biden’s move to push electric vehicles over gas-powered engines. The House voted on bipartisan lines to pass the Preserving Choice in Vehicles Purchases Act, which would amend federal law to block state moves to eliminate the sale of gas-powered engines and it would bar the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) from issuing waivers that would ban such of these vehicles.

Russia’s defense minister on Wednesday boasted about the country’s military prowess on the battlefield in Ukraine—and then shrugged when asked if Moscow would win. “The troops are engaged in maintaining an active defense in the necessary and indispensable areas. We are firmly defending what we need to defend right now. But the main task is to smash [Ukrainian] equipment,” Sergei Shoigu told a reporter on state-controlled TV. He appeared caught off guard when the reporter concluded the interview with the question, “Will we win?” Staring off into the distance for a long pause, Shoigu shrugged before saying simply, “We have...

Two big questions (and lots of little ones) are on my mind today. The first big one is, how often is a bill practically unanimous in a state legislature? There’s a bill in California that seeks to ban driverless trucks over 10,000 lbs. Since cargo trucks can usually weigh as much as 80,000 lbs total (that’s counting everything – the vehicle, the cargo, the driver, a full tank of fuel, etc.), this bill covers everything from straight trucks to semi-trailers and similar big rigs. The ban – through at least 2031 – passed the state assembly in Sacramento back in...

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (right) tried to make his case on Fox News to become Donald Trump’s 2024 Republican presidential nominee, but the network’s news ticker continued to undermine him. DeSantis appeared on the network Friday to explain the steps he is taking to ensure his victory in next year’s Republican primaries, including visiting 55 of Iowa’s 99 counties. “We’ll be in those early states — Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina — making the case for people, answering their questions, shaking their hands,” DeSantis said, “and doing what we need to do to be able to show that we will...

Bud Light, which has been displaced as the nation’s top-selling beer following the Dylan Mulvaney fiasco, is in danger of falling farther behind its rivals when retailers reset shelf space this fall. Wholesalers, industry experts, and a former Anheuser-Busch executive told ABC News on Friday that Bud Light could lose refrigerator space at retailers such as Walmart and 7-Eleven. “During a busy shopping period on a Friday or Saturday night, if you don’t have the beer available cold on the shelf, consumers pick something else,” former Anheuser-Busch InBev executive Anson Frericks told ABC News. Frericks said that shelf space is...

A one-year-old boy has died and three other children have been hospitalized after an incident at a New York daycare on Friday. The as yet unnamed child died at Divino Nino Daycare on 2707 Morris Avenue in Kingsbridge on Friday afternoon. NFL Players Association executive director Lloyd Howell called Wednesday for all 30 NFL stadiums to utilize natural grass rather than turf after New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tear on Monday night at MetLife Stadium. ESPN's Adam Schefter posted Howell's statement on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which he noted that data shows playing on grass instead of turf can help curb "unnecessary injuries." California Gov. Gavin Newsom is eyeing a change to the United States Constitution. For the amendment to be considered, two-thirds of state legislatures would have to vote in favor of a convention, according to the Times. The proposed "Right to Safety Amendment" would limit legal gun ownership to adults 21 and older,...

ASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors in the case charging Donald Trump with scheming to overturn the 2020 presidential election are seeking an order that would restrict the former president from “inflammatory” and “intimidating” comments about witnesses, lawyers and the judge. Special counsel Jack Smith's team said in a motion filed Friday that such a “narrow, well-defined” order was necessary to preserve the integrity of the case and to avoid prejudicing potential jurors. “Since the grand jury returned an indictment in this case, the defendant has repeatedly and widely disseminated public statements attacking the citizens of the District of Columbia, the...

As the investment world still comes to grips with the Fitch Ratings decision to downgrade the U.S. debt rating, here’s an eye-popping statistic: the U.S. government’s debt will rise by $5.2 billion — every single day for the next decade. That’s according to the latest missive from Bank of America strategist Michael Hartnett, in which he references Congressional Budget Office projections to come up with the number. See: Congressional Budget Office paints grim long-term U.S. deficit picture Importantly, debt is set to grow much faster than the broader economy. On the CBO’s numbers, the debt held by the public will...

A man on a horse has been arrested for DUI after California Highway Patrol officers spotted him riding through the streets of a small town with an open container of alcohol. Officer Kody Brackett noticed the boozy cowboy galloping through Merced, 70 miles north of Fresno, and bucked into action. A video shared by the CHP showed the horse walking alongside a police vehicle, which the cops described as 'a display of true compassion.' This incident serves as a surprising reminder that the state's drunken driving laws also apply to horse riders. The California Vehicle Code 21050 reads: 'Every person...
