Officials at Grand Canyon National Park say a Virginia man died Saturday while hiking in the backcountry. According to the park, 55-year-old Ranjith Varma of Manassas, Virginia was attempting to hike from the South Rim to the North Rim in one day when he became unresponsive on the North Kaibab Trail about a mile south of Cottonwood Campground. On either September 12 or (as we’re going with here) the early hours of September 13* in 1944, 30-year-old French spy Noor Inayat Khan (also known as Nora Baker, or by her code name Madeleine) was executed at Dachau for her activities on the behalf of the Resistance in Nazi-occupied France. Noor, the first woman radio operator to be sent into France, came from a rather unusual background: her father was a Sufi religious leader descended from Indian royalty, and her mother an American from New Mexico. Born in Russia, raised in England and France, Noor studied psychology and wrote...

A California district attorney has claimed that allegations that she has soft-on-crime policies are actually racist attacks against her.Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and some of her supporters slammed Oakland residents who have been complaining that crime is too high in the major California city and that the DA is not doing enough. In addition to dismissing these locals’ concerns as "racism," Price and her allies claimed the elected official is being unfairly treated by a disenfranchised community. [The DA] ran for office on a progressive platform of what some call "restorative justice." *** *** "We're very worried about...

A young migrant has told of his unshakeable determination to cross the English Channel after walking for two years from his home in Afghanistan to Calais. Amin Khan, 20, spoke to the Daily Express at the "Afghan jungle" a rudimentary camp on waste ground close to the town's general hospital. The site is home to many different "jungles", camps of naturally segregated ethnic groups living apart to reduce the risk of violent clashes. Khan has been in Calais for a month and is penniless but hopes to grab a free ride on a migrant boat heading for the UK, at...

From the Richmond Sentinel, Aug. 4. There has been some confusion in the accounts from Charleston, which has prevented a clear understanding of the present relative positions of opposing forces on Morris Island. From the correspondent of the Atlanta Intelligencer, we have, however, a connected statement, which we present in substance as follows: We have received our late Southern files, including Richmond papers, to Tuesday last: On Tuesday night, the 25th ult., the enemy attempted to take our rifle pits, which lay about four hundred yards in front of Battery Wagner. They were unsuccessful, being repulsed with severe loss. On...

Sacred Scripture Alone Disproves the Bible Alone theory!Scripture Alone Disproves "Scripture Alone" From Genesis to the book of the Apocalypse, Scripture never says that Scripture is the sole infallible authority for God's Word. Scripture also mandates the use of tradition. This fact alone disproves sola Scriptura. Matt. 28:19; Mark 16:15 - those that preached the Gospel to all creation but did not write the Gospel were not less obedient to Jesus, or their teachings less important. Matt. 28:20 - "observe ALL I have commanded," but, as we see in John 20:30; 21:25, not ALL Jesus taught is in Scripture. So...

In December 2016, Musk had a private meeting with Trump, during which he was “baffled” by the then-president-elect’s comments about Tesla and NASA. “He seems kind of nuts,” Musk said after the meeting, according to Isaacson, “but he may turn out okay.” On the contrary: Musk “concluded that Trump as president was no different than he was as a candidate,” Isaacson wrote. “The buffoonery was not just an act.” “Trump might be one of the best bullshitters ever,” Musk told Isaacson. “If you just think of Trump as a sort of con-man performance, then his behavior sort of makes sense.”...

Last weekend’s events were largely kept under wraps. If asked, attendees donning name tags and color-coded wristbands were told to say they were gathering for a family reunion. It was, in some ways, true. On Sept. 9, almost a year to the day since 49 migrants landed on Martha’s Vineyard unexpectedly, Islanders hosted a quiet reunion for the asylum seekers who have since scattered across the country. There outside St. Andrew’s Parish House, volunteers and migrants reunited over food, music and lawn games — a far cry from the emergency response that had initially brought them together. Although the people...

The Ulma family were executed by the Nazis in 1944 for hiding Jews at their home. They were allegedly betrayed. In an unprecedented move, the Vatican on Sunday beatified a Polish family of nine — a married couple and their small children — who were executed by the Nazis during World War II for sheltering Jews. During a ceremonious Mass in the village of Markowa, in southeastern Poland, papal envoy Cardinal Marcello Semeraro read out the Latin formula of the beatification of the Ulma family signed last month by Pope Francis. In his homily, Semeraro noted that for their “gesture...

We all know Steve Buscemi as an iconic actor who's been in some of the biggest blockbusters on the silver screen and critically acclaimed TV shows — "Armageddon," "The Big Lebowski," "The Sopranos" and "Boardwalk Empire," just to name a few.
