WASHINGTON (AP) — House conservatives staged a mini-revolt Tuesday in retaliation for Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s leadership on last week’s vote to raise the debt ceiling, the right wing banding together to block progress on a mixture of bills and vent their frustration. Led by outspoken members of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of 11 Republicans broke with their party on an otherwise routine procedural vote that threw the day’s schedule — and the rest of the week — into disarray. It’s the first such procedural rule vote to fail in nearly two decades. The group is among some of...

San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone urged America’s leaders to start taking attacks on churches more seriously after a local prosecutor reduced charges for five individuals accused of vandalizing a Catholic mission. Writing at the Wall Street Journal on June 1, Cordileone said the “long, deep and sordid history of anti-Catholicism” has been ignored for far too long in America, and attacks will continue unless action is taken. At least 260 attacks on Catholic churches have occurred since May 2020, including arson, vandalism and other property damage, according to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. LifeNews, the Family Research Council and...

Perhaps on this day in 1730,* an elderly mulatto slave named Sarah or Sally Bassett was burned at the stake for attempted murder in the British Caribbean colony of Bermuda. Sally was the property of Thomas Forster, as was her granddaughter, Beck. (Thomas Forster was the grandson of Josias Forster, who was governor of Bermuda from 1642 to 1643.) The Forster family lived in Sandys Parish. Being so old, Sally wasn’t worth much: her value was appraised at one pound, four shillings and sixpence, or about $160 in modern U.S. currency. She also had the reputation of a troublemaker: in...

Gov. Joe Lombardo sides with Planned Parenthood and against his own party.CARSON CITY, Nevada (LifeSiteNews) — A self-professed Catholic and “pro-life” Republican governor signed pro-abortion legislation that codified his predecessor’s executive order and received the backing of Planned Parenthood. Governor Joe Lombardo signed legislation on Tuesday that prohibits prosecution of abortionists in the state who break abortion laws in other states. The law essentially makes Nevada a safe haven for abortionists who want to secretly travel to pro-life states and commit abortions, as long as those are protected under Nevada law. Democratic Governor Steve Sisolak, whom Lombardo defeated in 2022,...

The late Tom Clancy (military-political author) published one of his most recognized books back in August of 1991 titled The Sum of All Fears. The genre of the book (and later movie) was that of a political thriller, using the risk of all-out nuclear war as the be-all, end-all greatest threat to humanity. Mind you, this book was published in the last summer before the collapse of the USSR (December). Even still, by 1991, the Cold War appeared to be on the way out as communism began gasping its last and dying breath with Perestroika in the air. The Iron...

The city of Atlanta has approved funding for a controversial new police training center dubbed 'Cop City' by opponents. The 11-4 vote happened on Tuesday after hundreds of activists packed City Hall and spoke for hours in fierce opposition to the project, which they say will destroy the local environment and militarize the police. For about 14 hours, residents took to the podium to slam the $90 million project, saying it would be a gross misuse of public funds to build the huge facility in a large urban forest in a poor, majority black area of southeast of Atlanta. Six...
