CHICAGO — A Cook County jail inmate is facing additional felony charges for crafting a knife out of metal wires he removed from COVID masks, officials said Friday. During a conversation early in the pandemic, a jail employee explained the challenges of fighting the virus: “If we give [inmates] bar soap, they make weapons out of it. If we give them liquid soap, they drink it. If we give them hand sanitizer, they set it on fire.” But Terry Sturgis, a 25-year-old who’s been in jail since January on gun charges, may be the first to think about alternate uses...

On this date in 1835, four African slave rebels were shot at Salvador. The Malê Revolt acquired its name from the local designation for Muslims … which was the predominant religion of the slaves harvested from West Africa* who were pouring into Brazil. (It’s also known as the Muslim Revolt, or simply the Great Revolt.) Ethnically, these were mostly Yoruba peoples, known in Brazil as Nagôs; Nagôs constituted the bulk of the slave sector whom the Portuguese had nicknamed “Minas” — Gold Coast imports who had embarked their slave ships at the notorious Elmina Castle. Under whichever designation, this population...

Although the Biden administration’s sweeping student loan forgiveness plan and the legal troubles around it have gotten the most headlines, the U.S. Department of Education has already canceled more than $66 billion in education debt under existing programs. More than 2 million borrowers, including defrauded students and those who work in the public sector, have benefited from that relief over the last few years. $42 billion in debt canceled for public servants. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program allows certain nonprofit and government employees to have their federal student loans canceled after 10 years, or 120 payments. A number of...

CAIRO, Wednesday, May 13. Gen. GRANT had a severe battle with Gen. BOWEN, at Clinton, ten miles from Jackson, on the railroad, last Wednesday, lasting all day. BOWEN was beaten and driven back toward Jackson. The women and children are leaving that place for Meridian, and the men are preparing to hold the place. It is reported from rebel sources that a large force of rebels is coming from Charleston and Mobile, to prevent the capture of Jackson and Vicksburgh, and that GRANT, apprized of the movement, has fallen back to the river to await reenforcements. The March Toward Port...

Even conservative estimates suggest Russia has lost as many as 10,000 pieces of military hardware in Ukraine Analysts point to failure of Moscow's tactics and Ukraine 'outclassing' Kremlin's troops on the battlefield Tuesday saw Vladimir Putin host Russia's annual Victory Day parade to mark 78 years since the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. But while recent years have seen ostentatious displays with dozens of the Kremlin's most sophisticated pieces of military hardware rolling through Moscow's famous Red Square, this year saw a significantly slimmed-down affair. Some 8,000 troops took part in the parade - the lowest number since 2008....

The Harford County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Michael D. Stevens II, 38, stole a privately owned 1986 923-A 5-ton military vehicle from a residence in Bel Air, Maryland. Deputies responded to the scene at around 6:35 p.m. on Friday. The vehicle was later seen in Bel Air and reportedly entered onto Interstate 95, the statement said. Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop after arriving in Baltimore, more than 20 miles from Bel Air. Then, police say, the suspect left the vehicle and fled on foot but deputies were able to “safely apprehend” him and bring...

San Francisco CNN — Tanya Tilghman moved to the Bay Area as a teenager to live with her mom. Later, she married, had two sons and made a home in San Francisco’s historically Italian North Beach district, up the hill from the tourist and financial centers. Even when her marriage broke down, she never thought of leaving. This was her city, her people. Liberal like her, with a mix of income levels and a general sense of community. She didn’t worry about her growing boys going out on the streets where she herself always felt safe. But those streets have...

Those who dream of eliminating all private gun ownership in the United States face the prospect of a devastating legal defeat. We find ourselves living in a highly consequential time for the legal clarification of the 2nd Amendment. Extremely aggressive, wide-ranging bans of semi-automatic firearms have been enacted in various parts of the country, drawing legal challenges. While the ultimate resolution of these challenges is unknowable, many observers believe the Supreme Court will eventually arrive at a decision prohibiting the wholesale banning of semi-automatic firearms. Those who dream of eliminating all private gun ownership in the United States face the...

Pray For The Peace of JerusalemLuke 7 Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman 36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them....

When I was working on the David Horowitz Freedom Center’s ‘Disloyal Military’ investigation, I predicted that Air Force Chief of Staff Charles Q. Brown Jr. would be selected as the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The media is now reporting that Biden will indeed pick Brown to replace Milley. And as bad as Milley was, expect Brown to be much worse. Under Gen. Brown, the Air Force has become the most woke of the major service branches. Brown disgraced himself and his uniform during the Black Lives Matter race riots by releasing a video in which he...

This week marked the beginning of the end for some nutty thinking and policies. For some time, optimists like me have had to work hard to keep believing that reason will prevail. I now think, as reality sets in, my faith in reason, though too long delayed, is not unwarranted. This week is, I think, the beginning of the end for some nutty thinking and policies. Climate Change I’ve always believed that destroying the world’s economies and impoverishing poor people around the globe in a narcissistic belief that man can control the climate was lunacy. More research revealed every week...

Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko checked into a hospital near Minsk, according to Belarusian publication Euroradio and watchdog Belarusian Hajun. They reported that Lukashenko's convoy arrived to the hospital at around 7 p.m., during which time access to the clinic was closed off and the roads to it were guarded by armed enforcers. Lukashenko was publicly seen in Moscow celebrating Victory Day with Russian President Vladimir Putin and leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States countries, where his apparent physical weakness drew attention. Unlike the other leaders, he had to be driven around the small perimeter where the event took place....

Prosecutors will not charge a 22-year-old man accused of fatally shooting a 46-year-old in East Germantown on Monday afternoon while both were canvassing for a political group. Authorities say the shooting was in self-defense. Jane Roh, a spokesperson for District Attorney Larry Krasner, said Friday that both their office and the Police Department were in agreement about what happened between two paid canvassers for the progressive group One PA. “This is nonetheless a tragic loss of life,” Roh said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the decedent.” Meanwhile, family members of the victim, Eddie Brokenbough, were...

The twelve apostles included "James the son of Zebedee" (Matt. 10:2). Zeal without sensitivity can destroy your life and ministry. There's the story of a Norwegian pastor whose motto was "All or nothing!" His life and preaching were stern, strong, powerful, uncompromising, and utterly insensitive. Reportedly the people in his church didn't care much for him because he didn't care much for them. In his zeal and ambition to advance the kingdom and uphold God's standard, he neglected everything else—including his own family. One day his little daughter became so ill the doctor warned him that if he didn't move...

In Acts 9, we learn of a man called Saul of Tarsus, one of the most religious men who ever lived. He could boast, “I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.” What was his story? Saul was a devout Jewish man whose family strictly adhered to law and tradition. We see him here in chapter nine on his way to Damascus, seeking to destroy the new Christians who were disrupting the religious world. He was so full of hatred toward Jesus and his followers that he fiercely and doggedly tracked down and persecuted Christians, even...

The State of New York Office of the Attorney General has issued a letter to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals in an attempt to moot some of the challenges to the infringements on Second Amendment rights. Those challenges are now before the Second Circuit. When the Supreme Court published the seminal Second Amendment case in Bruen, re-enforcing the Heller opinion from 2008, in 2022, some states rebelled and defied the Supreme Court. One of these was New York. In New York, Governor Hochel, convened a special emergency session to create new law to infringe on the rights protected by...

As more and more parents and communities have begun paying attention to the “grooming” nature of LGBTQ books and other materials available to minors in school and public libraries, many of those parents and communities have pushed back against such grooming. In fact in towns, cities, counties, and states across America, policies, ordinances, and laws are being passed to protect children. But in contrast to good pushing back in those places, evil appears to be pushing forward in other places. And Illinois — famous for liberal policies that seem to constantly bring cities such as Chicago to the brink of...
