CAIRO, Wednesday, May 13.

Gen. GRANT had a severe battle with Gen. BOWEN, at Clinton, ten miles from Jackson, on the railroad, last Wednesday, lasting all day. BOWEN was beaten and driven back toward Jackson. The women and children are leaving that place for Meridian, and the men are preparing to hold the place.

It is reported from rebel sources that a large force of rebels is coming from Charleston and Mobile, to prevent the capture of Jackson and Vicksburgh, and that GRANT, apprized of the movement, has fallen back to the river to await reenforcements.

BELOW GRAND GULF, Thursday, April 30, 1863.

A large force has just been put ashore on the Mississippi side, at a plantation eight miles below Grand Gulf, known as "Bruenburgh," and is now marching toward Port Gibson. The intention is, as near as I can learn the plan of movements, to get in the rear of Grand Gulf, and thus cut off the rebel supplies, obliging them to evacuate the place. Port Gibson is a small town at the terminus of a railroad, eight miles east of Grand Gulf, and forms an important point for rebel operations. From the point where we have just put the troops ashore to Port Gibson is probably not over eight miles, say 3 hours' march, in this now sultry climate. If obliged to skirmish along the way, it will take longer, but the plan must take the rebels somewhat by surprise, and put them to the necessity of making some sudden move. It is believed, from information obtained, that there are no preparations of defence,
