Newspapers, the ones that used to appear in your driveway every morning, the ones you could pick up and turn the pages and read without the aid of an electronic device, those relics of a bygone age, they may be dying, but the print edition of any paper is still a reliable barometer of its editors’ priorities. The front page is the most prized real estate, with reporters vying to have their stories appear in that coveted space on A-1. Just as one can get a good idea of what is important to the editors by what runs on the...

The privileges, interests, biographies, fetishes and investments of researchers typically remain subtext. —Michelle Fine, Working the HyphenI am frankly amazed at the intellectual ineptitude revealed by our recent Democrat First Ladies’ degree-awarded ventures in academic exposition and by the media adulation they have received for their efforts. Having recently published an analysis of Jill Biden’s doctoral dissertation, pointing out its utter inadequacy, I find it comes as no surprise that former First Lady Michelle Obama considers it a work of substantial merit and heaps accolades on Biden as “a brilliant woman who has distinguished herself in her profession.”Michelle Obama is...

California Governor Gavin Newsom belatedly asked President Joe Biden for a federal disaster declaration on Thursday — two weeks after the storm arrived and several days after the snow had already stopped falling. Newsom’s request was the latest delay in responding to storms that have killed at least a dozen people in mountain communities. He declared a state of emergency for 13 counties a week after the storm arrived. Following that declaration last Wednesday, Newsom left the country for a personal trip in Baja California — an apparent vacation — while thousands remained trapped in their homes, short of food,...

A recurring theme here is the utter failure of progressive government social service spending programs to ever make a dent in, let alone solve, the problems they have been created to address. Whatever the problems may be — poverty, food insecurity, housing, etc., etc. — once massive government spending programs to “solve” them are put in place, the problems never show significant improvement, and more often than not get worse, at least according to official measures, the longer the programs continue and the more is spent. An extreme case of this phenomenon is the problem of “homelessness” in California. This...

As the Pentagon’s independent weapon tester, the Director of Operational Test and Evaluation (DOT&E), points out serious performance flaws aboard the U.S. Navy’s $13.3 billion USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78) aircraft carrier, the U.S. Navy wants observers to believe the new supercarrier is ready for combat. The carrier, just entering the DOT&E’s Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) test-and-trials phase, is certainly capable of doing all the basic things carriers do—the ship can stay afloat, launch aircraft, and travel from port to port. But there is a big difference between basic operations and true battle-readiness.

HOUSTON, Texas — The world will need fossil fuels for decades but they must be paired with technologies that capture their greenhouse gas emissions, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said Wednesday. The Biden administration wants the U.S. to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 to help limit global warming. It is seeking to displace oil, gas, and coal with renewable energy and electric technologies, but forecasts, including those by the Energy Information Administration, indicate prolonged demand for traditional energy sources. "We know that even the boldest projections for clean energy deployment suggest that, in the middle of this century, we’ll be using...

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is privately saying he intends to run for president in 2024, according to a new report. DeSantis has played coy about his intentions in 2024, but he’s been floated by numerous Republicans as a likely candidate. He also recently released a memoir, the timing is perfect should his current press tour end with an official announcement. Former President Donald Trump already announced he’s running again and he’s spent plenty of time already targeting DeSantis.

While speaking recently on something called “The Story of Woman” podcast, Hillary Clinton said that the U.S. makes it “as hard as possible” for women to have careers.Really, former first lady and Secretary of State? There are countless female CEOs, accountants, doctors, lawyers, and store managers in the United States today. No fewer than 60% of college students are female. Roughly 86 of the approximately 328 women billionaires on Earth are American, including Oprah Winfrey. That’s more than 26% of all female billionaires alive. (There are 195 nations on the planet. Do the math.) Contrast this with, say, various Muslim...

NANGAN, Taiwan (AP) — In the past month, bed and breakfast owner Chen Yu-lin had to tell his guests he couldn’t provide them with the internet. Others living on Matsu, one of Taiwan’s outlying islands closer to neighboring China, had to struggle with paying electricity bills, making a doctor’s appointment or receiving a package. For connecting to the outside world, Matsu’s 14,000 residents rely on two submarine internet cables leading to Taiwan’s main island. The National Communications Commission, citing the island’s telecom service, blamed two Chinese ships for cutting the cables. It said a Chinese fishing vessel is suspected of...

(Daily readings from the USCCB)“Therefore, I say to you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit.” Matthew 21:42Are you among those from whom the Kingdom of God will be taken away? Or among those to whom it will be given so as to produce good fruit? This is an important question to sincerely answer. The first grouping of people, those who will have the Kingdom of God taken away from them, are represented in this parable by the tenants of the vineyard. It is clear that one of...

Two leaked intelligence reports suggest that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau may have known about allegations of Chinese interference in Canadian elections, despite insisting he did not. Prime Minister Trudeau has claimed that he was not briefed on allegations of Chinese Communist Party (CCP) interference in federal elections but two memos from 2019 and last year suggest that senior government officials may have known of the allegations. The 2019 document warned of the CCP funding “preferred candidates” around two months ahead of that year’s federal election and came from Canada’s National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP), broadcaster Global News...

SVB Financial Group the parent of Silicon Valley Bank, saw its stock tumble more than 66% in premarket trade Friday, in a continued response to reports late Thursday that several funds were advising clients to pull their money, sparking fears of a run on the bank. Bloomberg News late Thursday reported that Founders Fund, the San Francisco-based venture-capital fund co-founded by Peter Thiel, has advised companies to do just so. The report cited people familiar with the matter. It came after SVB Financial ended down a record 60% in the regular trading day after disclosing large losses from securities sales...

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the...

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm, the February jobs report came in hot, hot, hot. One indicator that the Biden Administration will herald is that average hourly earnings rose to 4.6% Year-over-year (YoY). Too bad headline inflation is still at a whopping 6.4% YoY. More jobs were added to the US economy than forecast (311k actual versus 225k forecast). The U-3 unemployment rate rose to 3.6% from 3.4% in January. The biggest gainer in jobs? Food services and drinking places, of course, at 69.9 k jobs added. The bottom line? The Federal Reserve will likely view this...

DEI has gone national. The belief that quality takes a backseat to racial bean counting wormed its way into the White House in February, when President Biden signed an executive order that promises to create a national “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” bureaucracy. As Christopher Rufo reports, the DEI diktat, “Further Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government,” proposes three key strategies:Creating internal cadres and power centers through the deployment of “Agency Equity Teams.”Funding third-party political activism through grants to “community[-based] organizations.”Weaponizing civil rights law by requiring federal agencies to use artificial intelligence “in a manner...
