BREAKING: White House says classified government records were found at Biden's Wilmington, Delaware, home

(Daily readings from the USCCB)A leper came to him and kneeling down begged him and said, “If you wish, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched the leper, and said to him, “I do will it. Be made clean.” Mark 1:40–41If we come to our divine Lord with faith, kneel down before Him and present our need to Him, then we also will receive the same response given to this leper: “I do will it. Be made clean.” These words should give us hope in the midst of any and every challenge in...

House Republicans this week sought to make a statement about which flag our government should fly. GOP Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina introduced the Old Glory Only Act, which would permit only the American flag to be flown above U.S. embassies and other diplomatic outposts...

In a time of hybrid work, employers are extra-focused on making sure their staffers are being productive. Now come employees with work hacks to keep the bosses off their tails. Mr. Abbas wrapped the cord of his computer mouse around a rotating desk fan. Its motion kept the mouse moving and prevented his computer from shutting down. “I logged on, went to the gym,” he says. For workers who aren’t as handy, mouse jigglers are for sale on Amazon. “Push the button when you’re getting up from your desk and the cursor travels randomly around the screen—for hours, if needed!”...

Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) signed legislation Wednesday night banning commonly owned semiautomatic rifles and magazines which Democrats consider “high capacity.” The law took effect immediately with Pritzker’s signature. It allows those who already own the now-banned firearms to retain them, but requires that the owners register the guns with the Illinois State Police. Pritzker’s office released a statement upon his signing of the bill. It said, in part, “The new law also requires existing owners of semi-automatic rifles to register their ownership, ensuring that law enforcement knows the location of these weapons of war and who to hold accountable if...

Forced prepayment meter installations by energy companies should be banned until new protections for vulnerable households are introduced, Citizens Advice has argued. Based on Ofgem figures, Citizens Advice estimates that 600,000 people were forced onto a prepayment meter in 2022 because they couldn’t afford their energy bills. It forecast that 160,000 more people could be moved onto a prepayment meter by the end of winter if no further action is taken. More than one in five (19 per cent) prepayment meter customers cut off in the past year spent at least 24 hours without gas or electricity, leaving them unable...

Officials are still trying to figure out exactly what led to the Federal Aviation Administration system outage on Wednesday but have traced it to a corrupt file, which was first reported by CNN. In a statement late Wednesday, the FAA said it was continuing to investigate the outage and "take all needed steps to prevent this kind of disruption from happening again." "Our preliminary work has traced the outage to a damaged database file. At this time, there is no evidence of a cyberattack," the FAA said. The FAA is still trying to determine whether any one person or "routine...

An office in USC’s school of social work said in a memo Tuesday that it will no longer use the phrases “field work” and “going into the field” in its curriculum, instead replacing them with “practicum.” The office said the change is meant to support its anti-racist social work. “Language can be powerful, and phrases such as ‘going into the field’ or ‘field work’ may have connotations for descendants of enslaved people and immigrant workers that are not benign,” the memo read. In an emailed statement to the Daily Trojan, a spokesperson for the newly renamed Office of Practicum Education...

Sometimes it’s the little things – the one indignity too many – that cause people to revolt. Banning new gas stoves, as a commissioner on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has suggested, could be the diktat that finally brings Americans to rebel against the government’s incessant, autocratic and ultimately insulting intrusion into our daily lives. The European Union found that out the hard way. Just weeks before the British went to the polls to vote on whether they wanted to remain in the EU, reports leaked that the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels planned to ban electric teakettles that were...

The U.S. attorney for Delaware is nearing a decision about whether to prosecute Hunter Biden, The New York Times reported. U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss and his team have been probing the first son's overseas business dealings, and interactions between Hunter Biden's business associates and President Joe Biden before he won the nation's highest office, the Times reported. However, people familiar with the investigation told the Times that Weiss' focus appears to concern Hunter Biden's taxes. The newspaper said possible charges stem from Hunter Biden's failure to meet filing deadlines for his 2016 and 2017 returns, and possibly $30,000 in...

Young Chinese scientists who got their PhDs overseas and returned to China as part of a state-run talent drive published more papers after their return than did their peers who stayed abroad. The productivity bump can be explained by returnees’ access to greater funding and an abundant research workforce, according to the authors of an analysis published in Science1. The findings come as geopolitical competition between the United States and China mounts. In 2008, China began enticing expatriate scientists and foreign researchers to relocate to China through its Thousand Talents Plan, which aims to make the nation a global leader...

Some Twitter users calculated what the value of the Mega Millions jackpot would be after tax — and the results are disappointing. The Mega Millions grand prize shot up to $1.35 billion after Tuesday’s night’s drawing passed with no official winner. The prize is the second largest in history, but a number of investing and finance gurus on Twitter estimated that the eventual winner would be taking home far less than $1 billion when all is said and done. One thing that multiple Twitter users agreed on was that the IRS would win out no matter what. "The only guaranteed...

The FBI revealed how the bureau uses the CIA and National Security Agency to probe the private lives of Americans without a warrant in its updated rulebook, which is the first version made public since the Obama administration. The handbook, rewritten in 2021, confirms a decade-old leak showcasing the bureau’s collaboration with the CIA and NSA for FBI probes that may involve surveillance without court orders against people not accused of any crimes. Such probes are known as “assessments” at the FBI. The revelations will fuel critics who have long accused the FBI of abusing its national security surveillance powers.

On Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “All In,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) stated that the United States can’t take an unlimited number of asylum seekers, even though “there are many in my party who don’t want to admit that,” and the U.S. will have to limit the number of people it grants asylum to, encourage applicants to do so from their own country, “and then, frankly, turn those who don’t go through that process back around.” Murphy stated, “[H]ere’s the question, the question is can we accept an unlimited number of asylum seekers? The answer is no. And so while there...

We’re not sure it’s ever a great day wake up and be Pete Buttigieg, but today seems like a particularly bad one. Like, not only was there that whole FAA computer outage thing that ultimately resulted in all domestic flights being grounded — not the first air-travel-related crisis in recent weeks — but a bunch of Amtrak passengers were stranded on a train overnight in the middle of nowhere, having to be reassured repeatedly by the voice on the PA system that they were not in some kind of hostage situation. Inquiring minds understandably wanted to know how stuff like...
