OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN |
I enjoy these posts. Thanks
Glad to hear it. Thanks for replying.
Point of history note:
SAMARITANS were disliked by Jews and seen as a mongrel people during Jesus time.
They were the descendants of Gentile people Nebuchadnezzar had shipped in to live in the area after Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians, which was a common practice of that era.
Even though SAMARITANS were not ‘Jews’ in the traditional sense, they had somehow adopted the Jewish religion for themselves.
I think Jesus used this parable to show that the SAMARITANS were actually more ‘Jewish’ than the Jews of that time were, and especially the Pharisees and Sadducees who considered themselves to be the epitome and arbiters of what it means to be ‘Jewish’...........................
That's quite a reach, Red.
The pretext of the parable, an ‘expert’ in The Law had asked ‘Who is my neighbor?’, then Jesus began the parable.
The Samaritan in the parable was following the precepts of the Jewish religion, by ministering to the wounded man, whereas the Priest (Sadducee) and the Levite (Pharisee) did not.
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

Love thy neighbor as thyself......................
True. Just saying your extrapolation to the general needs support.
Many, many great paintings. #33 by Watts, well known British artist who achieved fame during his lifetime. A workaholic who painted from dawn to dusk, a pioneer of the Symbolism movement, he became famous for his portraits of the great Masters. His religious works were calling for greater kindness in the world. He was known as England’s Michelangelo for the twisting, muscular figures greatly influenced by the Italian artist.
he became famous for his portraits of the great Masters
So, he painted portraits of his contemporaries?
Watts was a 19th c. artist, he painted some of the masters of the past but mainly important people of his time. Now, I might be wrong about painting portraits of the old masters, I seem to recall reading it in a book. So if I am not accurate, I apologize.
Good Morning, Dan. :-)
Hi, Mary-Lou! Coincident with your emphasis today, I’m starting the Last Supper myself—four threads, I expect.
Good Morning Dan, and a happy day to all.
Another valuable ‘teaching parable’ from the Master.

If anyone has an interest: in this video, three friends hike this same road: Jerusalem to Jericho- very rugged country indeed.
