It seems as if anything can be done – truly anything – if it is in the name of safety. From the pandemic to peanut butter, as long as a new rule, regulation, mandate, dictate is couched in the language of improving safety it is either completely cosseted from criticism or its possibilities for gross governmental misuse are downplayed as the ravings of a paranoid lunatic. California and the rest of the nation may very well soon learn that when it comes to “good intentions,” if the government is involved the true intentions are often hidden and they are very...

When it comes to the war in Ukraine, about the only thing that’s certain right now is that the fighting and destruction will continue.Vladimir Putin remains fully committed to bringing all of Ukraine back under Russian control or — failing that — destroying it as a viable country. He believes it is his historical destiny — his messianic mission — to reestablish the Russian Empire and, as Zbigniew Brzezinski observed years ago, there can be no Russian Empire without Ukraine. Both of us have dealt with Putin on a number of occasions, and we are convinced he believes time is...

When I was asked to take over this column from my friend Kathy Shaidle, at her request, I knew one thing for certain: it would be a long time before I'd try to write about Bette Davis. Davis was Kathy's favourite movie star, All About Eve her favourite movie. She wrote columns about both of them, and any attempt on my part to match her thoughts about Davis would only showcase my comparative lack of insight. This coming week marks the second anniversary of Kathy's death. Along with her dog-eared copy of Whittaker Chambers' Witness, I've come into possession of...

It was nearly midnight in late April when Lynell Morris’s husband, Michael, returned home after a shift at work. As he fumbled his keys, the motion-sensing light on their front doorstep flicked on. His eye caught a glint of gold: a .22 bullet on his doormat. It seemed odd as he and Lynell own a different-caliber firearm. Nevertheless, he brought it inside and set it on their kitchen table. A few days later, he remembered to ask Lynell about it. Immediately, she yelped, “Politics!” Neither Lynell nor Michael is running for office. But over the last few months, Lynell had...

In what has been the most dramatic election for Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in a hundred years, final culmination came on the fifteenth ballot with the election of Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The election however did not come without McCarthy’s historic commitment to a heroic band of 20 opponents who negotiated substantial policy initiatives as well as procedural rule changes that will transform the role of the Speaker from a dictatorial empire-builder, and with it, make the House of Representatives into a more self-governing representative body. In a series of ground-breaking agreements, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO)...

Newly elected lawmakers in West Michigan’s Ottawa County are going all out against woke-ism, leaving liberals, moderate Republicans, and local media in tears as they institute real reforms. Their example should be followed by conservatives across the country. Thanks to an effective pro-family (and pro-medical freedom) message — as well as a forward-thinking campaign strategy — eight members of the recently-formed Ottawa Impact PAC won seats as county commissioners last year. That means nine out of the board’s 11 total members either belong to or are
