Here’s a question where I’ll bet you think the answer ought to be completely obvious: Should the purpose of government “anti-poverty” programs be to help the beneficiaries rise from poverty and become successful and independent, or alternatively should the purpose of such programs be to entice the recipients of aid into a life of permanent dependency upon government handouts? From the earliest days of the anti-poverty programs back in the 1960s, the programs were sold to the public as being a temporary boost by which the poor could be helped to escape from poverty and achieve self-sufficiency. And yet, about...

In an effort to help people process their anxiety over the environment and climate change, a Conway artist is forming an eco-grief support group. Hannah Harvester’s weekly community support group is designed to help people process their thoughts and fears about climate change and how it may affect communities in the future. “The first step toward going through these emotions is realizing you’re not alone in this,” Harvester said. “I think a lot of people don’t talk about it, and that’s certainly true for me. We’re feeling these feelings for good reasons, so let’s talk about them and take it...

Such a tough hombre, that Joe Scarborough! On Friday's Morning Joe, Scarborough said "I'd die before continuing to negotiate against myself" like Kevin McCarthy is doing. Scarborough alluded to McCarthy as "the snowflake, triggered, weak variety of Republicans that appear to be roaming Capitol Hill today." The table-pounding Muy Macho Joe said that instead of negotiating, he would "stare down" the holdout Republicans. Get the rest of the story and view the video here.

New York Representative-elect George Santos has faced criticism after appearing to flash a white power symbol while casting his vote for Representative Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker. During the voting process, Santos stood in the chamber aisle with his arms folded with a smirk on his face as waited to cast his tenth vote for McCarthy. C-Span footage shows that after the clerk called his name, Santos raised his hand to reveal the white power symbol, which he had seemingly positioned beforehand....

ARE you leaving your Christmas decorations up to cheer yourself up this winter? Christmas may have come and gone but some householders are choosing to keep their trees up. Twelfth Night, which fell yesterday, is traditionally the time people take their tinsel, trees and other trinkets down with many believing it’s bad luck to keep them up. However, English Heritage is appealing to the public to follow the traditions of their medieval ancestors and leave festive decorations up until Candlemas on February 2.

The inability of Republicans to quickly elect Rep. Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker had CBS's Steven Colbert agreeing with CNN talking head Chris Wallace's assertion that "such a disaster never would have happened under former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's reign. She ruled with an iron fist. Any Democrat who stood in her way would've faced stern consequences. This is the way that Democrats ensure unity within their Party and the country." "This McCarthageddon, as I call it, is God's punishment for McCarthy's overt hypocrisy," Colbert said. "Democrats are smart enough to keep their hypocrisy covert. That's why they're continuing to win...

Micki Witthoeft, the mother of Ashli Babbitt, the woman fatally shot by U.S. Capitol Police inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, was arrested Friday — the two-year anniversary of her daughter's death — after failing to comply with police orders to stop illegally blocking a primary access road to the Capitol area. Reports say that Witthoeft, 58, had been apprehended at approximately 1:45 p.m. EST for allegedly committing two violations of the Capitol Traffic Regulations — disobeying a police order, and also blocking and obstructing roadways. Witthoeft had apparently been grouped with a throng of protesters near the Capitol....

SNIPWhat McCarthy has offered Motion to vacate: McCarthy has offered to lower the threshold to bring up a move to force a vote on ousting the House Speaker down to just one member, a change from a threshold of five members that was revealed in a House rules package over New Year’s weekend. That was also lowered from a threshold of half of the House GOP conference that was agreed to in November. Floor vote to establish term limits for all House lawmakers: Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who has introduced a term limits bill, said McCarthy made that commitment. Floor...

A tense moment on the House of Representatives floor resulted in a Republican member physically lunging at another who then had to be restrained from further escalation. The scuffle happened between Reps-elect Mike Rogers, R-Ala., and Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., after the 14th House speaker vote failed. Gaetz was discussing with Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., the possibility of backing him in the next vote and appeared to mouth the worth "committee." Gaetz is currently on the House Armed Services Committee, which is chaired by Rogers. McCarthy appeared to agree and returned to his seat. Rogers, having witnessed the interaction, then walked up...

"Skrrrt! It's done!" A TikToker going by the name Taylor Ann cheerfully narrates in a video of the moment, which has amassed over 4.4 million views on TikTok. The TikToker did not respond to Insider's request for comment. The red-jacketed customer — one of a half-dozen stymied shoppers in the clip — eventually resorted to what Taylor Ann described as "the bunny trick," doing little wheelies...

Hapless host Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show is losing the ratings war to FOX News rival Greg Gutfeld — and the TV flop’s sinking number has left NBC brass with buyer’s remorse, RadarOnline.com has learned. But that number is even more shocking when compared to Fallon’s celebrated debut! The Saturday Night Live alum, 48, chalked up an impressive 11 million viewers when he first took over for...
