Johnson’s political muzzling silenced the primary moral and religious voices that Founder John Adams said were essential to the life of the Republic.. In 1954, then freshman U.S. senator Lyndon B. Johnson was running for re-election in a hotly-contested Democratic primary against fellow-Democrat State Representative Dudley T. Dougherty. THE NEW DEAL WITH THE DEVIL IN 1954: GIVE UP YOUR MORAL AND FREE SPEECH RIGHTS IN EXCHANGE FOR TAX WRITE-OFFS In the heat of that 1954 Texas primary campaign, Johnson introduced his now infamous “Johnson Amendment” in the U.S. Senate. [Catholic Caucus] Troubles Ahead: Francis Praises Opus Dei to the Skies"I am a very close friend of the Opus Dei, I like it very much and it works well in the Church," Francis pretended during his Abc.es interview: "The good they do is very great."He added that he is "a friend" of the Vicar General of Opus Dei, Father Mariano Fazio, who is from Argentina. For Francis, his crackdown on Opus Dei was "not only" a matter of Opus Dei, but of personal prelatures. However, Opus Dei is the only personal prelature in existence and Francis does not care about...

Recalling Jesus’ birth in a stable, Pope Francis rebuked those “ravenous” for wealth and power at the expense of the vulnerable, including children, in a Christmas Eve homily decrying war, poverty and greedy consumerism. In the splendor of St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis presided over the evening Mass attended by about 7,000 faithful, including tourists and pilgrims, who flocked to the church on a warm evening and took their place behind rows of white-robed pontiffs. Francis drew lessons from the humility of Jesus’ first hours of life in a manger. “While animals feed in their stalls, men and women in our...

Explanation: Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was discovered by astronomers using the wide-field survey camera at the Zwicky Transient Facility this year in early March. Since then the new long-period comet has brightened substantially and is now sweeping across the northern constellation Corona Borealis in predawn skies. It's still too dim to see without a telescope though. But this fine telescopic image from December 19 does show the comet's brighter greenish coma, short broad dust tail, and long faint ion tail stretching across a 2.5 degree wide field-of-view. On a voyage through the inner Solar System comet 2022 E3 will be...

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s speech before Congress a “photo op” Thursday.“I didn’t go to the speech, because I didn’t want to be part of a photo op asking for more money from the United States government when they have not given us a single piece of accounting on anything they spent,” Hawley said.Zelenskyy spoke before a joint meeting of Congress Wednesday night following a visit to the White House, calling U.S. aid to the county “an investment in the global security and democracy that we handle in the most responsible way.”Some Republicans, including...

PHOENIX - A judge has thrown out Republican Kari Lake’s challenge of her defeat in the Arizona governor’s race to Democrat Katie Hobbs, rejecting her claim that problems with ballot printers at some polling places on Election Day were the result of intentional misconduct. In a decision Saturday, Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Peter Thompson, who was appointed by then-Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, found that the court did not find clear and convincing evidence of the widespread misconduct that Lake had alleged had affected the result of the 2022 general election. On Friday’s broadcast of the Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends,” Yuma Regional Medical Center President and CEO Dr. Robert Trenschel stated that the hospital’s business model is “unsustainable” due to the uncompensated costs of medical care for migrants and stated that it’s extremely difficult for them to get compensated for this care because with many migrants, “we don’t know where they’re going to end up. We don’t know where they go. We don’t know if the name’s correct.”

Carol of the Bells https://www.sing-prayer.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/CarolOfTheBells.mp3Longfellow wrote "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" during the Civil War, his son having been wounded; the most dramatic moment is a reference to canons in the south. The composer of the Ukrainian Carol of the bells, Mykola Leontovych, a simple, provincial musician, was killed by the Soviet secret police, after he had given hospitality to the assassin and had shared his bedroom for the night. Longfellow's "The Three Kings" mentions "the myrrh for the body's burying" among the Magi's gifts. Christmas Bells have a sentimental legacy. But Bells are also a sign of...

There's no silver cloud for which the identity-politics crowd can't detect a downbeat lining! Take the news of black women being appointed to some of the country's most prestigious positions. You'd think that would be cause for unqualified celebration in liberal circles. But not so fast! On Mehdi Hasan's MSNBC show today, guest host Melissa Murray led a segment on "the glass cliff." The notion is that women, particularly women of color, tend only to be appointed to prestigious positions at institutions that are in crisis, and thereby are being "set up to fail."Get the rest of the story and...

“Christmas and Easter Rolled into One!” (John 1:1-18) This year we have the unusual circumstance of Christmas falling on a Sunday. This last happened in 2016, and before that, in 2005 and 2011. Christmas won’t fall on a Sunday again until 2033. Not only is it Sunday, the Lord’s Day, when Christians have been going to church for 2,000 years, but it is also Christmas Day, one of the major festivals of the church year. So you would think, with this double reason for going to church, that churches across the land would be packed this morning. Nah, nah! Think...

KNOXVILLE, TN — Local wife Chelsea Hammond has just proposed a brand new 4,155-page Target funding bill to her husband but is only giving him 2 days to read through it all. Chelsea claims that if the omnibus spending package is not passed in its entirety, then their household will have to shut down and will be unable to buy necessities such as groceries and cute fuzzy socks with candy canes on them. "How am I supposed to read through all of this in just 2 days?" said concerned husband Kurt Hammond. "And don't get me wrong, honey, of course,...

A Christmas Message December 24, 1981 Nancy and I are very happy to send our warmest greetings and best wishes to all those who are celebrating Christmas. We join with Americans everywhere in recognizing the sense of renewed hope and comfort this joyous season brings to our nation and the world.
