Philadelphia's mayor said he is "disappointed" that a court ordered the city to remove a plywood box covering a statue of Christopher Columbus. A spokesperson for Jim Kenney said the office believes the statue should be removed from Marconi Plaza.... ...Judge Mary Hannah Leavitt handed down her ruling on Friday, telling the city that if it disagrees with the statue's "message" it can add a plaque..."More to the point, the City accepted the donation of the Columbus statue in 1876. It has a fiduciary duty to preserve that statue, which it designated an historic object in 2017," the judge wrote.

Blondie recalled their close call with a gun-toting Phil Spector in 1977, reflecting that they were fortunate to avoid working with the notorious producer.

The rising stars were still a year away from the big time, which arrived with the launch of third album Parallel Lines. On the other hand, Spector – who died in 2021 – had been a celebrated name for nearly two decades. Once known as the “first tycoon of teen” after forming a record label at the age of 21 and developing the “wall of sound” production technique, he’d soon enter semi-retirement and spend the last years of his life in jail for shooting actress Lana Clarkson dead in 2003.

In the 14 months since joining DeSantis's staff, [Christina Pushaw] has transformed the typically button-down role of gubernatorial press secretary into something like a running public brawl — with Twitter as her blunt-force weapon.

Transgender Americans face rising hatred and violence in a year that has seen 35 of them murdered. Last month, a gunman entered an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado and started firing, killing five and injuring 19. In that context, the last thing that should be happening in Sacramento is for a notorious transphobe to have a platform at one of the city’s most prominent venues. Yet that’s exactly what’s happening. On Monday, the Golden 1 Center will feature comedian Dave Chappelle, giving a powerful platform to a transphobe who has purposefully misgendered transgender people and publicly sided with the famously transphobic...

Hundreds protested in Tunisia Saturday against President Kais Saied ahead of parliamentary elections that represent the latest consolidation of a power grab he began in July last year. The protests were organised by political parties that have been marginalised by Saied -- first by him firing the government and suspending parliament last year, then by a new constitution. "Freedoms, freedoms -- the police state is finished!" protesters shouted. Demonstrators marched in central Tunis holding aloft banners with the words "resign" and others complaining that people have become "poorer and hungrier", AFP correspondents saw.

Iranians expressed horror, disbelief and anger at the ruling establishment and its judiciary, which hanged a 23-year-old protester over his participation in an anti-government demonstration. The execution of Mohsen Shekari at a prison outside Tehran on Thursday unleashed a barrage of furious reactions from ordinary Iranians in the midst of the anti-government unrest that has engulfed Iran for nearly three months. The early morning announcement on Thursday marked the first known death penalty carried out against a detainee arrested in the ongoing protests and sent shockwaves across Iran, fueling fears that the state was determined to go the extra mile in...

Kirstie Alley had many outspoken personas in her 40-year Hollywood career: comedic bombshell, Scientologist, Twitter warrior.... ...As a longtime Scientologist — she made it to the highest level of learning, Operating Thetan Level VIII — there were immediate questions about the church’s role in her medical treatment following her death.... ...“OT VIII... can cost between $1,000,000 to $2,000,000 to go all the way up and it can take you 20 years. “Scientologists are told that, if they can reach OT VIII, they will be ’cause over matter, energy, space, and time,’ which translates to various superhuman abilities, including being impervious...

Arizona Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake brought forth a civil complaint Friday to overturn her election defeat and declare her the winner. Claiming that voting tabulations were rife with illegal votes, Lake is also seeking the opportunity to “inspect” Maricopa County ballots, strike “invalid” ballots, and have a trial for any disputed factual claims in the matter. “An order setting aside the certified result of the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election and declaring Kari Lake is the winner of the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial election,” one of the demands for relief in her complaint declared. “LFG,” Lake wrote on Twitter alongside a...

Amid speculation over election processes in key states, midterm elections in Iowa came down to a hand recount between candidates for the U.S. House of Representatives. After election night, Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate announced that there would be a hand recount in Scott County, House District 81. In four tabulations of the ballots, including the hand count of the ballots that Thursday and a machine count on the next day, Friday, the tabulation totals matched and every ballot was accounted for in a fast and agreed upon resolution. “Accuracy is the most important factor in elections, and we...

For a while during the runup to the elections last month, it looked as if former Republican real estate developer Rick Caruso might pull off a miracle and defeat Democratic Congresswoman Karen Bass to become the next Mayor of Los Angeles. In the end, Bass squeaked out a six-point victory and will be inaugurated as the first female Mayor in the city’s history. Out on the campaign trail, Bass made a point of repeatedly promising to tackle the city’s endemic homelessness crisis. Not coincidentally, a large group of homeless people have been living in an encampment that activists set up...

Back in August, we looked at the twenty cases of voter fraud identified in Florida by Ron DeSantis’ new Election Integrity Office and the people who were subsequently arrested. While all twenty of those people clearly broke the law, there were some extenuating circumstances that made the cases rather complicated. After sorting through all of the details, I went on to predict that we probably wouldn’t see any convictions after these cases were heard. Now that courts have had time to process the first few suspects, that’s mostly turned out to be accurate. Judges have thrown out three cases, while...

Our joke of a justice department has run into another roadblock in its ridiculous crusade against Donald Trump over his alleged possession of classified documents. On Saturday, a federal judge spiked the DOJ’s request to hold Trump in contempt of court for supposedly not complying with the original subpoena that eventually led to the raid of his Mar-a-Lago home.At the time, Trump had not yet assigned someone with the task of signing off on whether all the classified materials were returned or not. The DOJ wanted a sworn statement, and when they didn’t get it, they went nuclear. The judge...

Friday, Twitter’s “Trust and Safety Council” resigned in protest over Elon Musk’s opening Twitter to diverse opinions (Twitter’s ‘Trust and Safety Council’ Resigns in Protest and Elon Musk Evaluates Their Performance). While ostensibly they were supposed to guide Twitter’s fight against the platform’s use to distribute child pron and other elements of child sexual exploitation (CSE), they made no measurable progress. It took over a decade for Twitter to agree to create a tool to report CSE. Twitter refused to take down the video clips of a 13-year-old engaged in sex acts despite the pleas of the child and parents....
