On November 4, 1980, there was a tidal wave in American politics. Former California Governor Ronald W. Reagan won 44 states, trouncing incumbent President Jimmy Carter with a thrilling 489-49 Electoral College drubbing. That’s what we remember. 44 states voted to throw out an incompetent liberal incumbent, electing the first conservative to the White House since Calvin Coolidge in 1924. But there are some other statistics about that day that we may have forgotten. The Republican Party also picked up a net of four more governorships that night… the Republican Party picked up a net of 34 members of the...

SARASOTA — Dan Smith moved from Ohio to Florida 26 years ago, and a Democrat hasn't won a governor's race since he arrived. The state was always competitive when election time rolled around, though. Indeed, the last three governor’s races in Florida were decided by a percentage point or less. This year feels different, said Smith, a retired plumber from Cincinnati and a registered Democrat. He cast his vote Wednesday for Democrat Charlie Crist in the governor’s race. But he doesn’t think Crist has much of a chance

Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., has torpedoed a suggestion that Republican lawmakers might use an upcoming fight over the debt limit to reign in federal spending on Social Security and Medicare. In an interview with Politico published Friday, Hawley bluntly rejected an idea proposed by some House Republicans to use an impending vote to increase the debt limit as leverage force Democrats to compromise on entitlement reforms. "That’s dumb," Hawley said. "We need to do everything we can to keep them solvent for sure. But the idea of fiddling around with them and using those as leverage? I hope nobody’s seriously...

The past year or more has seen China’s position on the world stage change quite a bit. The nation’s increasingly aggressive stance toward Taiwan and the rapid expansion of its military and economic influence across the Pacific has left many western nations on edge. And, of course, China’s continued support of Russia during the invasion of Ukraine puts them at odds with all of NATO and the rest of our allies. That’s why it was rather surprising to see German Chancellor Olaf Scholz flying to Beijing this week to meet with Xi Jinping. Scholz clearly wanted to talk about renewed...

Keaira Bennefield’s estranged husband — who now stands accused of killing her with a shotgun — somehow obtained an order of protection against her after he savagely beat the mom of three in their home, The Post has learned. The stunning new details behind the Buffalo woman’s shocking Oct. 5 slaying are contained in an official transcript of ex-con Adam Bennefield’s arraignment in the vicious, caught-on-camera beating inside their home — less than a week before cops say he gunned down his wife. Keaira, 30, said that Adam Bennefield, 45, “told me to ‘shut the --- up’ and that he...

Devastating cuts to Twitter’s workforce on Friday, four days before the midterm elections, are fueling anxieties among political campaigns and election offices that have counted on the social network’s staff to help them combat violent threats and viral lies. The mass layoffs Friday gutted teams devoted to combating election misinformation, adding context to misleading tweets and communicating with journalists, public officials and campaign staff. The layoffs included a number of people who were scheduled to be on call this weekend and early next week to monitor for signs of foreign disinformation, spam and other problematic content around the election, one...

The NY Times is connecting some dots here, noting that President Biden has made a number of claims about the economy recently that aren’t true. But the framing of the piece, for the most part, puts all of this down to the normal Biden habit of “embellishing the truth.”As President Biden and his administration have told it in recent months, America has the fastest-growing economy in the world, his student debt forgiveness program passed Congress by a vote or two, and Social Security benefits became more generous thanks to his leadership.None of that was accurate. The president, who has long been...

Zabihollah Khodaeian, the chairman of State Auditing Organization has said that "Enemies believe the Islamic Republic is finished." “Broken” is how a new report by the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee describes the FBI under the aegis of Christopher Wray and Merrick Garland. The 1050-page report, entitled FBI WHISTLEBLOWERS: WHAT THEIR DISCLOSURES INDICATE ABOUT THE POLITICIZATION OF THE FBI AND JUSTICE DEPARTMENT, was officially released on Friday. It places the blame not on the front-line field agents but on Wray and Garland and the politicized bureaucracy and hierarchy within the agency. The report wastes no time outlining examples of abuses, starting in the executive summary:The FBI is artificially inflating statistics about domestic violent extremism in the nation....
