On October 7 Musk claimed on Twitter SpaceX had already eaten $80 million in costs for the operation, a price tag that is expected to hit $100 million by the end of the year. “We are not in a position to further donate terminals to Ukraine, or fund the existing terminals for an indefinite period of time,” SpaceX’s director of government sales wrote to the Pentagon in a September letter that was obtained by CNN. That Musk no longer wanted SpaceX to pay for critical satellite services in Ukraine and was asking the Pentagon to foot the bill didn’t sit...

The President of the Russian Federation has decided to exempt seminarians from the partial mobilization decree issued in September 2022 in order to increase the number of soldiers assigned to the special military operation in Ukraine. The approximately eight thousand seminarians currently in the Russian Orthodox Church can breathe: they will be spared the partial mobilization decree of September 21, 2022 by Vladimir Putin, in order to hold a front line – a thousand kilometers strong – weakened by the recent Ukrainian counter-offensive in the Donbass. Until October 5, the only ones exempted from this “partial mobilization” were the employees...

St. Louis, Mo., Oct 16, 2022 / 12:50 pm (CNA). A well-known Chicago priest has been asked to step aside from ministry during an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse against a minor. Father Michael Pfleger, senior pastor at St. Sabina parish and a well-known social activist, will live away from his parish while the allegation — which he denies — is investigated. The alleged abuse occurred more than 30 years ago, the archdiocese says. In an Oct. 15 letter, Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago said Pfleger has “agreed to cooperate fully” with the request to step aside from...

On Oct. 17, 1987, Saturday Night Live cast members Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon debuted their bodybuilding duo Hans and Franz. Even though the characters were ostensibly from Austria, they were born in a far more unlikely place. Carvey and Nealon both joined the SNL lineup in 1986, part of an influx of new, younger talent to uplift the series’ sagging ratings. Both comedians became popular cast members, thanks to such memorable characters as the Church Lady (Carvey) and Mr. Subliminal (Nealon). The men were also close friends and embarked on a comedy tour together during the break between SNL’s...

Singer Robert Gordon, best known for his work in the rockabilly revivalist movement of the late '70s, has died at age 75. The news was confirmed by Gordon's record label (via Variety.) A GoFundMe page had been set up by Gordon's family last month, noting that the singer had been in the hospital for six weeks as he battled a form of acute myeloid leukemia. "Robert's incredible voice and his music has not only put rockabilly back on the map, it has made memories for us all," the fundraiser page said. "A voice like his, coupled with the authenticity he...

The Pennsylvania State Correction Officers Association (PSCOA) is backing Republican Dr. Mehmet Oz against his radical Democrat opponent, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, in the Keystone State’s U.S. Senate race. Oz’s campaign released a letter of endorsement from the PSCOA on Tuesday. In the letter, dated August 3, PSCOAS President John Eckenrode wrote to Oz: Your leadership and support of the men and women who patrol Pennsylvania’s 35 state correctional institution, forensic units and community corrections centers will be critical. We’re impressed with his knowledge of the many issues our members face, and for the great concern he’s shown for our...

For some ungodly reason, John Oliver has an audience. As a comedian, that’s not really all that surprising. But his biggest audience these days seems to be people who are looking to him for news and information about how the world works, and that’s pretty mind-blowing. It’s actually disturbing, if you really stop and think about it, because he’s actively misinforming/disinforming his audience. Whether it’s because he himself is misinformed, or it’s because he’s comfortable just lying to people’s faces, it’s not something that should be celebrated. But it is being celebrated, much like radical trans activism. Which, incidentally, Oliver...

To own a vessel that’s worth more than $1 million would be a luxury for most of us, but in the case of a billionaire, this is just one of the tenders that come with the mothership, a fabulous superyacht. With the owner’s connection to the real estate market, it’s no surprise that this opulent pleasure craft feels like a true top-level resort on water. At just 45, Rene Benko is one of the richest men in Austria, with an estimated fortune of almost $5 billion. He founded the company that would become a real estate empire at age 22,...

Iron Maiden experienced a Spinal Tap moment on Monday night when their Spitfire replica plane malfunctioned during their set-closing performance of "Aces High." The Powerslave opening track has been a fixture of Iron Maiden's ongoing Legacy of the Beast World Tour, which began in 2018. The song — which previously opened the band's set and now closes it — features a 90% scale replica of a Spitfire, the single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Royal Air Force during World War II. Typically, the Spitfire "flies" (i.e. floats) above the band during "Aces High." But during Tuesday's performance at the DCU...

The Nevada Police Union (NPU) said its members “overwhelmingly” have “no confidence” in Democrat Gov. Steve Sisolak, who is seeking reelection against Republican Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo. The NPU, which says it is the Silver State’s largest police union, held a vote with its members from Oct. 14 -17 resulting in “95.3 percent (451-22) of the voting members declaring ‘No Confidence’ in Governor Sisolak,” the union announced on Tuesday. The police union’s announcement comes just days after Sisolak lost the endorsement of a top teachers union and just weeks before a high-stakes, extremely close gubernatorial election.

On Tuesday’s broadcast of CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) said that claiming that Congress spent too much money over the last couple of years and the Federal Reserve is behind the curve because it enabled this spending is “Monday morning quarterbacking” and that most of the coronavirus spending was done during the tenure of former President Donald Trump. Warner also noted that he voted for all of the coronavirus spending packages and declared that he would vote for all of those spending bills again “Because we didn’t know where COVID was going to end.” Co-host Joe Kernen asked,...

Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) said Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) is living in a “fantasy land” after the senator alleged during Tuesday night’s debate that five million illegal immigrants have crossed the border since President Biden took office. “Congresswoman Demings says that what’s happening at the border is nothing unusual,” Rubio said. “We have 5,000 people a day crossing the border. You know how many people have entered our country illegally since Joe Biden took over as president? Five million,” Rubio said, noting that two million have come into the country in the last 12 months, 80 of whom are on...

A jury acquitted Igor Danchenko, an analyst hired to compile parts of the Steele dossier that alleged ties between Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia, of charges of lying to the FBI on Tuesday. Why it matters: It is a major blow to special counsel John Durham's multi-year investigation into the origins of the Russia probe and possible misconduct by U.S. law enforcement. Danchenko was the third person charged, and subsequently indicted, in the investigation. This trial is expected to be the last stemming from Durham’s investigation before it is concluded. The jury began deliberating on whether to convict...

The U.S. military tracked and intercepted two Russian bomber pilots flying off the Alaskan coast on Monday, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command. The two Russian Tu-95 Bear-H bomber aircraft were “entering and operating within the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ),” the release explained, and “remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace.” Their incursion of Alaska’s ADIZ, which is the international airspace adjacent to an area, “is not seen as a threat nor is the activity seen as provocative,” the release continued. Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, the Pentagon spokesman, declined to...
