Leaders from Poland, Norway and Denmark have attended a ceremony to mark the opening of the new Baltic Pipe, a key stage in the drive to wean Poland and Europe off Russian gas. The pipeline will transport natural gas from the Norwegian shelf via Denmark and through the Baltic Sea to Poland. It is the centrepiece of a Polish strategy to diversify away from Russia that began years before Moscow’s February invasion of Ukraine triggered a global energy crisis. The flows from Norway along with supplies via liquefied gas terminals are central to Poland's plan. The country was cut off...

Cycles of a diet that mimics fasting appear to reduce signs of Alzheimer's in mice genetically engineered to develop the illness. The researchers found that mice that had undergone several cycles of the fasting-mimicking diet showed less Alzheimer's pathology. The researchers found lower levels of two major hallmarks of the disease: amyloid beta—the primary driver of plaque buildup in the brain—and hyperphosphorylated tau protein. They also found that brain inflammation lessened and better performance on cognitive tests compared to the mice that were fed a standard diet. The fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) is high in unsaturated fats and low in overall...

The council two weeks ago approved a $2 million on-call bus services contract, which is proving insufficient as the city already shelled out $1.8 million for 81 charter bus departures as of September 21. The bus money, just like the $17,790 the city is spending every night in hotel rooms and the 22,245 meals served to migrants so far, is coming from the city's general fund. In addition, the city has committed 125 municipal employees to address the crisis, including 50 who are “embedded” at immigrant advocacy nonprofits that cannot find enough volunteers. The city’s total expenses on migrants stand...

Diets high in guar gum, a common food additive and dietary fiber, limit inflammation and delayed the onset of multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms in mice. "Dietary fibers are potent modulators of immune responses and can control inflammation in multiple diseases." Dr. Osborne and colleagues exposed groups of mice to a variety of diets—a control 5% cellulose fiber diet, a diet entirely lacking in dietary fiber, or diets enriched (30%) with fiber in either resistant starch, inulin, pectin, or guar gum. Guar gum was the only fiber type that significantly limited the MS-like symptoms. Guar gum—guaran—is extracted from guar beans, and...

In a study published in JAMA Network Open today, scientists report on how effective the original vaccine and booster shots are against the COVID-19 Delta and Omicron variants. Researchers in Ontario analyzed data from more than 134,000 people, including those who tested positive for Delta and Omicron infections during December 2021. They found that people who were fully vaccinated (with two doses of an mRNA vaccine, from either Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech) experienced a decline in vaccine effectiveness against both Delta and Omicron infections, but the drop was greater against Omicron than against Delta. Among the vaccinated, the shots’ effectiveness declined...

In a little more than a year, the internet will face a major wave of regulation mostly targeted to protect data and fight misinformation. With the Jan. 1, 2024 implementation of the European Union’s Digital Services Act and the United Kingdom working on the Online Safety Bill, social networks and search engines will be subject to new requirements. The largest internet companies will face regulations that require them to perform annual transparency reports discussing how they recommend content to their users and allow researchers to access data to better understand risks and implement measures to counter illegal content. Still, regulation...

Russian men who are fleeing the country to avoid being drafted into Moscow’s war against Ukraine should seek asylum in the US, the White House said Tuesday. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her regular briefing that the response inside Russia to the so-called “partial mobilization” ordered last week by the country’s president, Vladimir Putin, shows “this war that was started by the Kremlin is unpopular.” “Regardless of their nationality, [people] may apply for asylum in the United States and have their claims adjudicated on a case by case basis,” Jean-Pierre added. “We welcome any folks who are seeking...

When you consider the media blitz by Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, last weekend (ABC, CNN, NBC and CBS); specifically pointing out the U.S. position against Russia; it is almost a certainty that U.S. action was behind the underwater detonation of explosives to take out Nord Stream pipeline system.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) signed onto the falsely named Inflation Reduction Act in part because he claimed he was getting an energy permitting deal that was going to be helpful to the energy industry. We wrote previously how there was no guarantee that he was going to get the backend of the deal, even though he had to sign aboard the IRA first.Republicans were furious that Manchin sold his alleged principles down the river on this. Normally, you would think they would want things that would be advantageous to energy but not when it was part of a deal to...

Russia has just finished a Potemkin referendum conducted in the illegally occupied Ukrainian oblasts (provinces) of Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson (see Vladimir Putin to Address Russia; Annexation of Ukraine Provinces and Mobilization Seem to Be on the Table). The “voting” began on September 23, and the question is whether those provinces wish to be annexed to Russia. There are complicating factors. The voting began within 48 hours after the announcement....
