Hurricane Ian could strengthen to a Category 4 storm as it targets Florida, forecasters say.
The hurricane made landfall in Cuba about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday just southwest of La Coloma in the western province of Pinar del Río with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters expect the storm to continue to intensify as it makes its way north toward the west coast of Florida, where a hurricane warning has been issued from Chokoloskee to Anclote River, including Tampa Bay, and Dry Tortugas.
A number of counties along Florida’s west coast issued evacuation orders. It is not yet clear where exactly Ian will make landfall, but models suggest it could hit the Sarasota area Wednesday.
Ian is expected to bring 12 to 18 inches of rain to central and northeast Florida, and 6 to 8 inches to the Keys and south Florida through Thursday.

Models are never correct.
Fort Meyers will be on the dirty side of the storm and is in for a very rough ride.
Cape Coral is very densely populated lots of homes.
We should ask pitcher Justin Verlander if that's true of his wife Kate Upton. Or Tom Brady about his wife Gisele Bundchen. "You're right, dear" is probably often heard at home.
Say what you want but my late wife’s sister, her husband, and aunt (age 80 something) are in Sarasota and Tarpon Springs.
I pray for their making it through this.
The young lady who grew up next door to us got married a year ago. She and her new husband moved to St. Pete a few months back and bought a new house there. The house was just finished a couple weeks ago and they moved in. They have evacuated over to Ft. Lauderdale, so they should be safe. But I pray their new house comes through unscathed.
...almost as I enjoy the eu circiling the drain!
LOL
My sister is holed up in a Cat 5 rated building in Dunedin (next to Clearwater), providing storm/safety updates on a government website. She has her own office, a cot, there are showers there (if the water stays on) and she brought bedding, changes of clothes and toiletries from home. She and others deemed “essential” will have meals provided while they’re holed up.
She says she was “team playered” into doing this.
She’s in good spirits. I’ll be in communication with her throughout this. God bless my seestah.
I think it is going to follow in the path of Charlie.
It moved to the east after passing over Cuba.
I’m 65 milles south of Tampa and the winds where I am are mild.
Prayers up for them and for all in that area.
My sister is in Dunedin.
Yeah and my sex drive could strengthen as I approach 72, but 71 ain’t helped. 🐂💩
Especially the climate models. CO2 is beneficial.
Yes, God bless her and keep her safe! Please post any updates from her if you can. :-)
That roaring sound you hear is Meathead, et al, hoping as many people will doe in Fla. so they can talk sh_t about DeSantis.
die
From what I’m seeing, Fort Myers or perhaps a bit further north may be the landfall, meaning that highest storm surge will be south of Sarasota, perhaps around Punta Gorda - Port Charlotte, or Fort Myers. It’s coming in fairly fast and may make landfall by this afternoon. Will update as I’m watching it more or less continuously until landfall.
The last major hurricane to hit Tampa Bay directly was in October 1921 (before ‘canes had names). But in 2004 of course Charley hit Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte very hard and kept up its rampage well inland too. (cat-4 at landfall)
On a Fort Myers landfall track, the impacts for Sarasota and Tampa Bay would be more moderate than severe. Let’s hope it weakens before landfall.
