It came in their closing statement’s commitment to pursue Just Energy Transition Partnerships, or JETPs – an emerging mechanism that has thus far received little attention, in this part of the world at least, but could transform the way that dollars flow from richer nations such as Canada.

Webb’s Fine Guidance Sensor Provides a PreviewWe are less than one week away from the release of the first full-color images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, but how does the observatory find and lock onto its targets? Webb’s Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) – developed by the Canadian Space Agency – was designed with this particular question in mind. Recently it captured a view of stars and galaxies that provides a tantalizing glimpse at what the telescope’s science instruments will reveal in the coming weeks, months, and years. FGS has always been capable of capturing imagery, but its primary...

Five months into Russia's war on Ukraine, the Kremlin still hasn’t decreed a general mobilization to draft troops for its invasion, but there are growing reports that it is enticing and pressuring men of fighting age to join, as well as leaning on younger conscripts to sign contracts so they can deploy to the front. In Bashkortostan -- a Russian republic located some 1,300 kilometers east of Moscow -- many parents of conscripts have launched appeals to the local military prosecutor's office over complaints that their sons were illegally detained at the conscription office and were told that they would...

How often do you see scientists scrambling to debunk a piece because it’s *too scary* about COVID rather than not scary enough? It’s happening on social media today as virologists voice their contempt for this buzzworthy analysis, which cites one preliminary study and some questionable supporting material to make two shocking claims. One: Being infected by Omicron or one of its substrains may confer “no immunity” against future infections, theoretically making reinfection possible every few weeks. Two: It’s possible that each reinfection “depletes T cells and destabilizes immune function,” leading to “cumulative” immune damage — in which case each reinfection could...

Sen. Raphael Warnock has been hit with allegations that he misused campaign funds to defend himself against a federal lawsuit stemming from his time as a pastor, according to a report out Wednesday. Atlanta resident Melvin Robertson initially sued Warnock (D-Ga.) in 2019 over allegations dating back to 2005, when Warnock led the city’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. That suit was dismissed by a federal judge in Georgia without any of the defendants being served, Politico reported. Robertson sued again in April 2021, making the same allegations against Warnock and naming the church and other public officials as defendants, the report...
