Federal officials say climate change is intensifying droughts, leading to wildfires far worse than experts or models have predicted. That is adding to the danger that accompanies one of the U.S. Forest Service’s primary methods of mitigation: the prescribed burn. “Fires are outpacing our models,” Forest Service Chief Randy Moore said in a statement this week. Moore pointed to escalating climate conditions as the reason why an otherwise routine prescribed burn in New Mexico earlier this year escaped to ignite the largest wildfire in state history. “Climate change is leading to conditions on the ground we have never encountered,” he...

Earlier this month we found out that voting machines can do tricky things. The results of a Democratic primary in a Georgia county were challenged after a hand count found the machines to be off by thousands. Marshall Orson, a Democratic candidate for DeKalb County Commission, requested that the local elections board not certify the results as scheduled because there were “numerous issues” in the race (Kind of sounds like what Trump asked for after the 2020 election). The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Orson asked for a formal recount of the election and an “independent review.”. “There is no rational...

How many times will Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) convince us he’s a conservative and then run off into the sunset like the RINO he is? He’s done it again. Graham was re-elected for the fourth time in 2020. And you know what it’s like to be a senator. You have 6 years to prepare for the next election. So it’s not like you have to hurry to get back to the electorate. Graham has plenty of time to reinvent himself. He’s running in what is probably the most conservative state in the union. It’s about 85% evangelical Christian. It was...

A moment of crisis strikes the title character of George Leef’s new novel, The Awakening of Jennifer Van Arsdale (Bombardier Books, 2022). How will Jen handle it? Does she suppress the feeling and practice what George Orwell called Doublethink: “The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them?” Or does her mind reject the contradiction and actively seek out the truth? In his story, Leef offers what his subtitle calls “A Political Fable For Our Time.” Jen is a progressive political journalist for the Washington Post, highly skilled at crafting what real-life practitioners...

According to a preliminary report made public by investigators, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is largely to blame for the security lapse at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. While the Capitol Police were understaffed, Pelosi’s House Sergeant at Arms repeatedly turned down requests from the Pentagon for National Guard assistance, and officers were ill-equipped and undertrained. It’s almost as if she wanted the entire thing to happen… The full report from Republican investigators Reps. Jim Banks and Rodney Davis won’t be made public for a few weeks, but Banks and Davis said their decision to do so was motivated...

On June 25, 1876, a village of some five thousand Lakotas and Cheyennes camped on the Greasy Grass River (today’s Little Big Horn) was famously attacked by George Armstrong Custer and his vaunted Seventh Cavalry. The Indians were followers of the powerful Húnkpapa holy man Sitting Bull, and, like their leader, most of them wanted nothing to do with white men. They simply wanted to be left alone, to live separate from the Euro-Americans who’d been steadily encroaching and trespassing upon Lakota lands for decades. With shouts of “Hóka hé!” (Come on!) and “The Earth is all that lasts!” the...

A US navy destroyer sunk during World War II has been found nearly 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) below sea level off the Philippines, making it the world's deepest shipwreck ever located, an American exploration team said. The USS Samuel B Roberts went down during a battle off the central island of Samar on October 25, 1944 as US forces fought to liberate the Philippines—then a US colony—from Japanese occupation. A crewed submersible filmed, photographed and surveyed the battered hull of the "Sammy B" during a series of dives over eight days this month, Texas-based undersea technology company Caladan Oceanic said....

On Friday, when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision establishing a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion, the three Democratic appointees — Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor — wrote a forthright response casting the majority’s decision as a blow to women’s civil rights.“With sorrow — for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection — we dissent,” they wrote.“Today, the Court … says that from the very moment of fertilization, a woman has no rights to speak of,” they continued....

The CDC's been trying to warn men in Florida or traveling to Florida, particularly those who identify as gay, bisexual, queer or trans, that they need to get a vaccine that can prevent them from getting meningococcal disease. The Supreme Court’s decision Friday to overturn Roe v. Wade and severely limit abortion access across much of the country is not only an infringement on my human rights. It also violates my religious beliefs. Given that American Jews are one of the most consistently liberal groups in the country, it’s not surprising that an overwhelming majority of us — 83% in one 2014 poll — support legal abortion in all cases.

When former President Donald Trump's American Freedom Tour pulled into Mississippi last week, The Daily Show’s Jordan Klepper tagged along. On Thursday's show, Klepper shared some of the conversations he had with attendees regarding the ongoing January 6 House select committee hearings. Attendees were shown video testimonies from the former president's closest allies and family, but many refused to accept the information being presented to them. For example, one gentleman was shown a video of Ivanka Trump testifying that she believed Attorney General William Barr's assertion that no voter fraud was committed in the 2020 election. "I respect Attorney General...

The research shows that the same "jumping genes" are active both in the human brain and in the brain of two species, Octopus vulgaris, the common octopus, and Octopus bimaculoides, the Californian octopus. This discovery could help us understand the secret of the intelligence of these fascinating organisms. Sequencing the human genome revealed as early as 2001 that over 45% of it is composed of sequences called transposons, so-called "jumping genes" that, through molecular copy-and-paste or cut-and-paste mechanisms, can "move" from one point to another of an individual's genome, shuffling or duplicating. In most cases, these mobile elements remain silent:...
