When incidents of defense against bears occur in the United States, a common position of bear apologists is to claim “bears were here first”, as if, somehow, a bear has moral authority over humans. A group that promotes the expansion of grizzly bear populations makes this claim, in a more sophisticated way. From conservationnw.org:Grizzly bears have coexisted with people in the North Cascades Ecosystem from when the first people arrived in North America. The most dangerous bear, the grizzly bear, was not in the lower 48 states before humans were. Humans were here first. The grizzly bear is a relative newcomer...

Departing Meta executive Sheryl Sandberg announced her resignation from the tech giant during an ongoing probe into her alleged use of corporate resources to plan her wedding, according to a report Thursday. Sandberg, 52, shocked the business world Wednesday with her decision to quit as Meta’s chief operating officer, saying she wanted to focus on her nuptials and future philanthropic efforts. But the powerful executive also reportedly felt burned out after building Facebook into a global force and scrutiny of her every move — which includes a review by Meta into her upcoming wedding to marketing CEO Tom Bernthal. Meta’s...

York County officials sent a clear message after GT Real Estate Holdings, LLC, announced Wednesday that it had filed for bankruptcy. Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper specifically formed GT Real Estate for the Rock Hill headquarters site off I-77, north of Dave Lyle Boulevard. On Thursday morning, York County issued a statement noting the bankruptcy protection lists the county as one of the creditors. That’s because of GT Real Estate’s and the county’s agreement to upgrade a section of Mt. Gallant Road bordering the new headquarters property, according to the county release. The county put up $21 million for the...

Instead of President Ronald Reagan saying ““Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall” we need someone to tell President Biden and Federal Reserve Jerome Powell to “Stop driving up prices and making housing unaffordable.” Unfortunately, The Fed thinks that raising interest rates will temper price increases — it won’t. But it could tamper home price growth. So what we are left with is soaring home prices AND soaring mortgage rates, leaving this scary chart. The housing cost index has risen 114.5% under Biden. Its only going to get worse from here. Today’s jobs report for May showed that the U-3 unemployment...

China’s high-speed rail network includes 37,900 kilometers (about 23,500 miles) of lines that crisscross the country to link all of its major mega-city clusters. All have been completed since 2008. No major incidents have been reported on the network since 2011, when 40 people were killed and nearly 200 others injured after a high-speed train was struck from behind by another train near Wenzhou, Zhejiang province.

A pair of Queens strippers who flaunted their lifestyles on social media were targeted by two decidedly anti-social armed bandits, prosecutors and sources said Friday. One of the well-to-do pair was the victim of 2021 home invasions — including one where she and her husband were zip-tied as the hoods aimed weapons at their children, authorities said. The two robbers are now in custody. Details of the two terrifying Queens apartment holdups emerged with the arrests of the bandits accused of fleeing with $79,000 cash in small bills — mostly singles — and $100,000 in high-end handbags in the first...

BATTLE-FIELD, Monday, June 2, 1862. The rebel army still occupied the camps of CAGEY'S and COUCH's Divisions on Sunday morning, with a strong picket force guarding the road facing SNEAD'S house and the wheat field where our earthworks were thrown up, extending from our extreme left to the railroad, near Fair Oak Station. The distance from the point where our earthworks were located to the edge of the wood could not have been more than four hundred yards. This position the rebels held until day dawned on Sunday morning. To our right, on the other side of the railroad, the...

Australia's federal police and Monash University are asking netizens to send in snaps of their younger selves to train a machine-learning algorithm to spot child abuse in photographs. Researchers are looking to collect images of people aged 17 and under in safe scenarios; they don't want any nudity, even if it's a relatively innocuous picture like a child taking a bath. The crowdsourcing campaign, dubbed My Pictures Matter, is open to those aged 18 and above, who can consent to having their photographs be used for research purposes. All the images will be amassed into a dataset in an attempt...

Rick Smith, founder and CEO of body camera and Taser maker Axon, believes he has a way to reduce the risk of school children being shot by people with guns. No, it doesn't involve reducing access to guns, which Smith dismisses as politically unworkable in the US. Nor does it involve relocating to any of the many countries where school shootings seldom, if ever, occur and – coincidentally – where there are laws that limit access to guns. Here's a hint – his answer involves Axon. Smith's proposal involves mounting his company's occasionally lethal Taser [PDF] on drones, based on...

Switzerland’s power supply remains uncertain for next winter and troubles with enough electricity capacity cannot be ruled out, the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission, Elcom, said in its annual news conference this week. Swiss nuclear power generation could be lower in the winter, but more importantly, some of Switzerland’s neighboring countries, mostly France, could export less electricity.Due to the expected lower availability of French nuclear power generation and of France’s power exports to Switzerland, the Swiss imports of power generated in France is likely to be much lower this winter compared to previous winter seasons, Elcom said. Therefore, Switzerland may need...

A Florida man has been arrested and charged with five felonies for threatening to kill Rep. Lauren Boebert. Matthew Comiskey, a self-described “lib,” was arrested in Palm Beach on Friday over the tweeted threats. Tweets to the congresswoman included “don’t come to Florida. Us libs have big guns here and we stand our ground. Take you down like Trayvon,” and “if I ever saw Lauren I’d be glad to take her out and go to prison. Would be job well done.”

Democratic congressional candidate Max Rose came out swinging this week — at Hunter Biden — torching the first son for his shady foreign business dealings that Republicans say potentially put US national security at risk. “There is no doubt in my mind that what Hunter Biden did was wrong, being on the [Ukrainian energy company] Burisma board and engaging in whatever else he dealt with,” Rose told The Post during a newsroom interview. The former Army officer said the The Post — which first and accurately reported on the existence of Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop in October 2020 — got...

I read something very sad recently. It seems a 68-year-old climate-change activist in British Columbia has been under a doctor's care since 2017 with "eco-anxiety and biosphere-related depression" to the point where his condition has become "debilitating." He is now seeking a medically related death (assisted suicide) to stop the pain. Until this point, this man's request for assisted suicide had been denied because "his condition was not an 'acceptable, permissible malady.'" However, in March of 2023, someone whose only medical condition is mental illness will be eligible, so this man is reapplying. And see, this is what concerns me...

Like most Freepers, I don’t particularly care for youtube postings. But in watching this documentary, the rare Freeper with an attention span will take away a deeper appreciation of the events faced by Vice Admiral Nagumo and Rear Admiral Yamaguchi on June 4th. I suggest scheduling an hour or so when you can view it without interruptions. You’ll want to hit the pause and occasionally rewind to absorb the fateful decisions and fog of war at sea before the widespread use of a new technology called radar. The Battle of Midway was a closer run thing than the outcome, the...

On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” host Bill Maher stated that part of the problem with drugs and homelessness in various major cities is a policy approach that “Nothing is better than anything else” and that “everything is positive. Everything is not positive. You should be ashamed that you’re using, that might get you to stop.” Maher stated, “[P]art of the problem with losing civilization is when you fail to make judgments about how some things are better than others. We have seen this over and over again. Nothing is better than anything else, keeping women in burqas is...

French President Emmanuel Macron said it is vital that Russia is not humiliated so that when the fighting stops in Ukraine a diplomatic solution can be found, adding that he believed Paris would play a mediating role to end the conflict. Macron has sought to maintain a dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in February. His stance has been repeatedly criticised by some eastern and Baltic partners in Europe, as they see it as undermining efforts to pressure Putin to the negotiating table. "We must not humiliate Russia so that the day when the fighting...

June 4, come rain or shine, tens of thousands of people would descend on Victoria Park in Hong Kong to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre... every year the park would turn into a sea of candles.... Authorities banned the vigil in 2020 and 2021 citing coronavirus health restrictions... Many say the Hong Kong government would be stretching credulity if it again banned the event on the grounds of Covid. Yet that appears to be what outgoing Chief Executive Carrie Lam has suggested. The police cited Covid measures and a public order ordinance and warned those who advertised or organized...

I'm a Jewish American, and I understand my history. The speed with which President Joe Biden and his Marxist handlers are destroying America and the U.S. economy has never been seen in world history – except for Nazi Germany. I call this "The Biden Blitzkrieg." I compare what's happening to America today to the Nazi blitzkrieg. The Nazi army conquered Europe at a speed never before seen in world history. Do you know how the Nazis did it? Hitler pumped his troops with methamphetamine (i.e., speed). That's right, the Nazi army was literally drugged with speed. They became superhuman speed...
