The illustrated guide also includes mobilization information for military reservists in case a war breaks out. On March 22, in the broad daylight of a typically gorgeous day in Beverly Hills, thieves in hoodies and sunglasses took a sledgehammer to the plate glass window of Peter Sedghi’s boutique and furiously rummaged through the shards. In less than 90 seconds, the robbers stole more than $3 million worth of jewels. Two days later, in response to a wave of high-end robberies, the Los Angeles Police Department announced there would be no arrests. Instead, it cautioned Hollywood residents not to wear high quality jewelry in public. “Beverly Hills is one of the most affluent, safest neighborhoods in the...

At least 17 Los Angeles street gangs are behind a sudden spike in brazen robberies in which robbers follow people home from high-end locations and make off with expensive jewelry or other goods, police officials said Tuesday. The gangs, mostly based in South Los Angeles, independently staged robberies and sometimes used spotters to target people wearing luxury watches or driving pricey cars, Capt. Jonathan Tippet, who spearheads an LAPD "follow-home robbery" task force, told the city Police Commission. Michael Moore, chief of the LAPD, said they don't believe the robberies are spontaneous. "We believe that many times, these offenders are...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California wants electric vehicle sales to triple in the next four years to 35% of all new car purchases, an aggressive target set as part of the goal to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars. Emissions spewed from gas-powered passenger vehicles make up about a quarter of the state’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Californians would still be allowed to drive gas-powered cars and sell used ones. The rules would require 35% of new car sales for model year 2026 to be zero-emission vehicles, including battery or hydrogen powered, or plug-in electric hybrids. That’s a sharp...

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The federal government has approved a proposal to increase at-sea monitoring of some commercial fishing trips to 100%. The government approved the new, higher percentage of trip cover on Tuesday, said Michael Pentony, a regional administrator with the National Marine Fisheries Service. The rules apply to valuable species that are harvested in the Northeast such as cod, haddock and flounder. Pentony said the new rules will replace the old process of calculating a target for the level of monitoring coverage every year. The coverage target will instead be 100% for four years as long as federal...

Wednesday of Holy Week Matthew 26:14-25 Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples to go into Jerusalem and prepare a Passover supper. At the heart of the Passover meal was the eating of a lamb, which had been sacrificed, in remembrance of the lambs of the original Passover, whose blood had been smeared on the doorposts of the Israelites in Egypt. Making his Last Supper a Passover meal, Jesus was signaling the fulfillment of John the Baptist’s prophecy that he, Jesus, would be the Lamb of God and the definitive sacrifice. This sacrifice is made sacramentally present at every...

I can imagine that chatting about home and family might be part of a normal day in Kindergarten. But what I cannot imagine is that it is impossible to educate small children without telling them about your love life and outlining prospects for theirs. The really damning thing about the reaction to Florida’s bill is not that some teachers think it’s appropriate to mention their after-school activities in class. It’s that LGBT maximalists think it’s mandatory for all children to know about and endorse every possible variety of sexual pursuit, parental attitudes notwithstanding. This entitlement to other people’s kids is...

LONDON (AP) — The head of the World Health Organization has slammed the global community for its focus on the war in Ukraine, arguing that crises elsewhere, including in his home country of Ethiopia, are not being given equal consideration, possibly because those suffering are not white. WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus questioned “if the world really gives equal attention to black and white lives,” given that the ongoing emergencies in Ethiopia, Yemen, Afghanistan and Syria have garnered only a “fraction” of the global concern for Ukraine. He was speaking in a virtual press briefing from Geneva on Wednesday. Last...

The airline industry is continuing to call for the end of the federal mask mandate, making it clear “we need to remove these mandates” as federal health officials extend it yet again. The federal mask requirement for public transportation was slated to expire in less than a week, on April 18, 2022. However, the Biden White House will allow its extension yet again, as federal health officials previously made it clear that yet another extension is “on the table.”

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Skeptical Wisconsin Supreme Court justices questioned Wednesday whether state law allows for voters to give their absentee ballot to someone else to return or whether drop boxes can be placed outside municipal clerk offices. The court’s ruling later this spring or summer is expected to establish rules for the upcoming midterm election where the battleground state’s Democratic governor and Republican U.S. senator are on the ballot. The court in February barred the use of drop boxes outside election clerk offices for the April spring election where local offices such as mayor, city council and school board...
