California plan aims to triple sale of electric cars by 2026

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California wants electric vehicle sales to triple in the next four years to 35% of all new car purchases, an aggressive target set as part of the goal to phase out the sale of gas-powered cars.

Emissions spewed from gas-powered passenger vehicles make up about a quarter of the state’s total greenhouse gas emissions.

Californians would still be allowed to drive gas-powered cars and sell used ones.

The rules would require 35% of new car sales for model year 2026 to be zero-emission vehicles, including battery or hydrogen powered, or plug-in electric hybrids. That’s a sharp increase from 2021, when about 12% of all cars sold in the state were zero-emission, according to the air board.

That requirement ramps up to 100% of all new sales by 2035. New gas-powered cars wouldn’t be completely banned; up to 20% of sales by 2035 could be plug-in hybrids that run on a combination of battery and gas power, though the regulations boost how far such cars must be able to travel on battery power alone.

Major automakers including Ford and Toyota deferred to the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, an industry group, for a statement on the proposal. The group says the industry is “committed to electrification and a net-zero carbon transportation future” but raised questions about the drastic ramp up in the required zero-emission vehicle sales.

“Automakers will certainly work to meet whatever standards are eventually adopted, but these draft requirements will be extremely challenging even in California and may not be achievable in all the states that currently follow California’s program,” the group said.

Uh, sales to some, gifted to underserved groups and “New arrivals”?

I checked in with a liberal (not crazy lefty, but still registered Democrat) and asked them what they thought about electric cars.

They said “totally insane for our winter weather”—no way”.

If Democrats push this too hard their own suburban moms in northern states are going to revolt.

Insanity. Pure insanity.

Their grid has issues now; assuming they meet this goal, just imagine how that will “improve” things!

This replaces the High Speed Rail, the last project with dates in calendars set but incomplete.

California already tells their power customers that their regularly scheduled brownouts are the new normal.

Now they want an even larger burden on the power grids.

You can't make this stuff up!! LOL

Good luck with that. The next time they shut off the electricity when there is a wind and wildfire in CA.

Guess what’s coming? A shortage of electricity. Wind and solar can’t do it. Think of thousands of electric cars dead on the freeways.

Our CPA is up to his eyebrows getting all of his clients’s taxes (including ours) done on time.

He will be monitoring the tax write offs for both state and federal if you buy a hybrid or pure ev, and get back to us in May.

We early inherited our Ridgeline to one of our heirs. I couldn’t keep the batteries charged in two vehicles.

My wife and I are in our 80’s and might be interested in joining the group on our cul de sac with hybrids and pure EV’s.

Insanity. Pure insanity.

All part of the clever plan, which is to eliminate private personal transportation.

Electric cars are a bait-and-switch measure on the way to this objective. They aren't supposed to really work as an alternative to gasoline powered vehicles. And they won't.

The elites will still have cars of course, and drivers too. The rest of the peasants will go on foot or take such public transportation as they are permitted.

“EVs, however, are not green. A half million pounds of earth has to be dug up for just one battery pack which must be moved for processing in huge (diesel-powered) trucks, crushed and then wildly-toxic chemicals used to extract the ores — specifically lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper and others. None of this occurs with a traditional vehicle. The packs are not economically recyclable and requiring them to be will wildly escalate their costs further. Charging said vehicle is approximately equal to running your electric clothes dryer all night long, and the cost of power when you’re not at home is roughly double to triple when you use a “supercharger” or similar; this makes the cost on a per-mile basis higher than that of a gas car in many cases.

We do not have the electrical capacity nor is there any way to generate it using so-called “green” methods to charge these vehicles if a material percentage of the fleet converts. Without power you own a $50,000 brick and being “out” means not going anywhere. What’s worse is that the existing fueling stations are used by a vehicle for about 5 minutes; conservatively it requires 30 minutes to get usable range from an EV, so contemplate where you’re going to get six times the land you have for each fuel station now, plus you will need to place them twice as close together as the average EV range is half or less that of a gasoline vehicle.

The truth is that modern automobile gasoline engines are about as efficient as can be achieved. CO2, which is the only primary emission of modern closed-loop gasoline engines, is not a pollutant — it is plant food and emitted by every animal as well. Simply put your gasoline car is far greener, all-in, than is your EV. Sorry, facts are facts folks and we don’t use liquid hydrocarbons because we’re pigs. We use them because nobody has come up with an actual workable and cost-effective alternative.

Mandating the impossible is a recipe for societal collapse. Secretary Pete has never put forward any facts, figures and computations to show how such a “transition” can take place. That’s because he knows he’s 100% full of shit and what he is cheering on and part of is impossible.

I don’t care if you feel this is a good thing or not. That which you feel must yield to physics.

Always.”

Meanwhile, are electric car manufacturers willing and able to triple production by 2026?

They’ll have mobile electric chargers powered by gas. Those will pull up to your dead car and charge it enough to get off the road. Probably “free.”

Tallahassee has a city car that brings you a gallon of gas. Apparently they see the same people a lot. Because, hey, free gas.

Didn't California Democrats also plan a "magical" high speed train at one time?

Not that they do a good job of planning anything, I think that the only thing that desperate Democrats plan is how to rig the next election.

Otherwise, it's good that some consumers are at least helping to pioneer rechargeable battery technology, that is, the batteries with four wheels.

In the meanwhile, please consider the following example challenges for today's EV owners.

Insights welcome.

Patriots are reminded that they must vote twice this election year. Your first vote is to primary career RINO incumbents. Your second vote is to replace outgoing Democrats and RINOs with Trump-endorsed patriot candidates.

Again, insights welcome.

Ev’s can be shut down with a re command or in a worst case a localized emp. The gunmen boys can’t do that with a 73 F150, Therefore they must be eliminated to maintain total control of the plebes

Would happen if there’s enough lithium. They should legislate that, the car sales would be organic.

Where is the electricity to charge these vehicles coming from?

We already have rolling blackouts in the summer?
