Wisconsin Supreme Court justices question ballot drop boxes

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Skeptical Wisconsin Supreme Court justices questioned Wednesday whether state law allows for voters to give their absentee ballot to someone else to return or whether drop boxes can be placed outside municipal clerk offices.

The court’s ruling later this spring or summer is expected to establish rules for the upcoming midterm election where the battleground state’s Democratic governor and Republican U.S. senator are on the ballot.

The court in February barred the use of drop boxes outside election clerk offices for the April spring election where local offices such as mayor, city council and school board were decided. But the larger question the court has yet to address is whether to allow the secure ballot boxes going forward in places such as libraries and grocery stores.

The fight is being closely watched as Republicans push to limit access to absentee ballots following President Joe Biden’s 2020 win in Wisconsin, beating Donald Trump by just under 21,000 votes. Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers and U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson are on the ballot in November.

State law is silent on drop boxes, but the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission has told local election officials they can be placed at multiple locations and that ballots can be returned by people other than the voter.

If the dems or repubs wanted fair elections, we’d have them.

This needs to be taken all the way to the Supreme Court.

It is precisely because the written laws are unclear about the validity of these boxes that the Dems were able to use it as part of the cheating process of 2020.

Ditto for the cheat-by-mail-in ballots.

If we could get CLEAR guidance from SCOTUS (preferably that neither is allowed under any circumstance) then the state legislatures would not be able to roll over and allow these cheating mechanisms to be utilized in 2024.

Ditto for Dominion -- if only we could get a thorough nation-wide audit. Wonder why they are fighting so hard against it....

Many voters can expect to get 5-7 ballots in the mail this year.

Gee, I thought the US Constitution says the State legislators do that.

“State law is silent on drop boxes”

That doesn’t mean it is silent on the procedure for voting. I am sure that the legislators back in the day never envisioned such a crooked practice. The law probably does list specific procedures that must be followed.

Agree, and if we wanted 99.9% clean voter rolls we'd have them too.

Let the courts rule however they will rule. We live in a post-rule of law America now so who cares?

In the meantime, if some unfortunate accidents befell those dropboxes every time they were put up, it would be a real shame. A shame I tell ya!

You’re not going to get any guidance from SCOTUS about how to interpret state election laws. They have clearly demonstrated they do not want to touch those issues with a ten foot pole.

Voting can be either in person or by mail. The alternate absentee voting site designation means that the municipal clerk cannot perform any voting activities in its office. Clearly in Wisconsin the drop boxes did not prevent municipal clerks offices from collecting absentee ballots, so the procedure was illegal.

WSSC did not allow drop boxes in latest election- it helped a lot eliminating the 400+ late nite drops at clerk office to swing a school board race

That stated, WSSC is 3-3 with Judicial Judas Brain Hagedorn trying to fit in with the progressive kids while shivving the conservatives who supported him in the back

Sad thing is that ghey won’t get a lol at the ballots for the 2020 election. How about let’s look at what has just happen. Yeah you never want it to happen again. But to have the wrong person in now is a disgrace. Do you think biden knew what was going on. If so it makes him as guilty as the mules that were paid with zucker bucks. Does anyone know if the rigged 2020 had commercials and did it show some of the mules in action. Guessing they used the grant money to pay mules and people working the poles. And some state had someone that said they worked for the election office in the room with the ballots and no one was to come in. Wonder what that person was doing with the ballots.
