Gov. Kathy Hochul rushed to the microphones Tuesday to reassure New Yorkers following the Brooklyn subway shootings. She should’ve stood in bed. Out tumbled a jumble of half-thoughts, unfocused and haltingly delivered, underscoring what has been apparent for some time now — which is that New York’s latest accidental governor would be out of her depth in a Buffalo mud puddle. Which, in a manner of speaking, is where she came from. Hochul’s horrible day also included news that her handpicked, staunchly defended lieutenant governor, Brian Benjamin, had just been arrested on federal corruption charges. Benjamin would be gone by...

At a press conference, Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said, “The entire state of New York stands with the people of the city, this community, and we say no more. No more mass shootings. No more disrupting lives. No more creating heartbreak for people just trying to live their lives as normal New Yorkers. It has to end. It ends now.”

Ukrainian Marines trying to defend the city of Mariupol from the onslaught of the Russian army says they've been fighting for more than a month without resupply of ammunition, food and water – but now the "mountain of wounded makes up almost half of the crew." The dire warning from the 36th Navy Brigade, which was posted to Facebook on Sunday, suggests cracks are starting to form in Ukraine’s fierce defense of Mariupol. "From the beginning... we have been defending Mariupol for 47 days," the Marines wrote. "We were bombed from airplanes, we were shot from artillery, tanks and other...

Covid cases in the Northeast are increasing again, which has some people worried about yet another surge. This is also one of the most heavily vaccinated parts of the country. While the Covid vaccines have been very effective at stopping hospitalization and death, it’s now clear they haven’t ended the pandemic. And yet the scientists I spoke with in the early part of 2021 were nearly unanimous in thinking they would end the pandemic through herd immunity. Why did they get it so wrong? Two major reasons: First, scientists vastly underestimated the ability of the virus to mutate quickly. And...

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (CBS46) - Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill Tuesday making it legal to carry a gun in public without a permit. “SB 319 makes sure that law abiding Georgians, law abiding Georgians, including our daughters, and your family too, can protect themselves without having to have permission from your state government. The Constitution of the United States gives us that right, not the government,” said Gov. Kemp, (R) Georgia. The governor signed the so-called Constitutional Carry Act into law Tuesday afternoon at a gun store in Douglasville. “The logic that if we put more guns on the...

Despite a City of Calgary injunction designed to significantly curb anti-vaccine mandate demonstrators' capacity to protest remaining in place for the fourth consecutive week, people were once again out in the hundreds at Calgary City Hall, demanding that the Charter-enshrined rights and freedoms of all Canadians be respected. Police presence was still noticeable, but it was significantly lessened compared to the prior weekends’ rallies. We did notice some peace officers noting the licence plates of people driving near the protest and laying on the horn, but unlike the three previous protests that took place since the onset of the injunction,...

Bishops sign letter warning that Germany's 'Synodal Path' could lead to schismMore than 70 bishops from around the world have released a "fraternal open letter" to Germany's bishops warning that sweeping changes to Church teaching advocated by the ongoing process known as the "Synodal Path" may lead to schism. The letter expresses "our growing concern about the nature of the entire German 'Synodal Path,'" which the signatories say has led to confusion about Church teaching and appears focused more on man's will than God's.“Failing to listen to the Holy Spirit and the Gospel, the Synodal Path’s actions undermine the credibility of...

Pennsylvania pharmacists want state lawmakers to allow them and trained staff members to continue providing the full range of childhood vaccinations. They’ve been doing so since early in the COVID-19 pandemic, when a federal emergency order allowed them to vaccinate children 3 and older. One purpose was to make sure children had full access to vaccinations during a time of lockdowns and disruptions to health care. And since COVID-19 vaccine became available in early 2021, Pennsylvania pharmacists have safely given about 7 million vaccine doses, including nearly half of doses given to children 5-11, according to pharmacists. Several hundred pharmacists...

President Joe Biden will allow E15 ethanol-blended gas to be sold throughout the US this summer, the White House said Tuesday, as part of measures to tackle soaring fuel prices in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. E15 gasoline, which is gasoline blended with 15% ethanol, is banned in most of the US during the summer because of air pollution concerns. But the White House said that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is planning to issue a national emergency waiver which would allow E15 to be sold between June 1 and September 15.

The tiny island nation of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean released a statement Tuesday that said it would default on its foreign debt, including bonds and government-to-government borrowings, amid its worst economic crisis in over seven decades. Sri Lanka’s finance ministry said it “has had an unblemished record of external debt service since independence in 1948.” A confluence of factors has drained the South Asian island nation’s foreign exchange reserves by more than 70% since the virus pandemic began, including the collapse in tourism and poorly timed tax cuts. “Recent events, however, including the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic...

The genre of faith-based films has grown stronger over the last ten years, but Father Stu pushes the envelope in one significant sense. Will the built-in audience for such films stand for an R-rated biopic? And will the warts-and-all depiction of the late Father Stuart Long bring in the crossover audiences that Mark Wahlberg commands?Hopefully, the answer to both questions will be yes, as Father Stu offers a moving and sometimes challenging look at faith, redemption, and family. No one gets spared from a harsh, critical look at Long’s life — not his family, his friends, his lifestyle, or even...

CNN’s new streaming service is facing major cuts after a disastrous start that fell far below projections. Chris Wallace left Fox News for a new job hosting on the platform, CNN+. After being poached by disgraced former network boss Jeff Zucker, Wallace celebrated his move to, what he thought, was a stable and well-funded new streaming service from CNN. But it has been a total disaster plagued by low subscription rates and shows that viewers are not interested in. And now it appears as though the new bosses at CNN have had enough. According to a new report from Axios,...
