WASHINGTON — Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said Monday that his department will monitor Florida’s implementation of a controversial new education law that restricts classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity to determine whether it violates federal civil rights law. Mr. Cardona’s statement hints at potential legal ramifications for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ decision Monday to sign the legislation, which critics have called the “don’t say gay” bill, into law. But it does not specify what actions the Biden administration could take in response. “By signing this bill, Governor DeSantis has chosen to target some of Florida’s most vulnerable students...

14:29 Joe Biden’s pick for the vacancy on the US supreme court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, has the backing of almost half of American voters, according to a Politico poll released Tuesday. It shows that 47% want the US senate to confirm her nomination, with 26% opposed, and the other 27% having no set opinion. Unsurprisingly, Jackson is overwhelmingly backed by Democratic voters in the Politico/Morning Consult poll, with 75% in favor. Among Republicans, only 21% are positive, and she earns the support of 39% of independents.

Ukraine’s defense intelligence ministry has released information on over 600 alleged Russian spies based in Europe, Fox News reported. The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s intelligence arm released the "list of employees of the FSB of the Russian Federation registered at the address: Moscow, St. Bolshaya Lubyanka" on Monday. The list in Russian contains names, phone numbers, passport numbers, license plate numbers and certain financial details for 620 Russian citizens it alleges are spies. There are also home addresses listed. According to The Telegraph, MI6’s former head Sir John Sawers said that only “10 percent” of Russia’s European spy operations are...

Numerous members of the Democratic National Committee's Rules and Bylaws Committee expressed support during a virtual meeting on Monday for a draft proposal that would dramatically remake the party's 2024 presidential nominating process. The draft proposal would end the Democratic Party's current nominating process structure -- where the Iowa caucuses go first, followed by primaries in New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina -- and instead implement a process that would prioritize more diverse battleground states that choose to hold primaries, not caucuses. The new structure would require states to apply to hold early nominating contests and the rules committee would...

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." "Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." "Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death." John, Chapter 8 1 Jesus went unto the...

A large cohort study found that babies born to men who took metformin during the period of sperm development were at increased risk for birth defects, specifically genital defects in boys. These finding suggest that men with diabetes who are taking metformin should talk to their doctors about whether they should switch to another treatment when trying to conceive a child. However, because diabetes control also affects sperm quality, discontinuing metformin treatment could also affect birth outcomes. The findings are published in Annals of Internal Medicine. Diabetes increasingly occurs in people of reproductive age, compromises sperm quality, and is associated...

The head of the UN’s flagship climate fund has warned that it will have to reject emissions-cutting projects if its donors do not provide more resources. Campaigners blamed the US for these potential cut-backs. Action Aid’s policy director Brandon Wu told Climate Home News: “If the GCF needs to limit its operations in the near future due to lack of funding, it’s hard to find any single country more at fault than the United States”. The US owes the GCF $2 billion. In 2014, then president Barack Obama promised the fund $3bn but only handed over $1bn before the end...

The following statement may be attributed to a spokesperson for The Walt Disney Company: “Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law. Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and...

President Biden requested more than $11 billion to help developing countries adapt to the ravages of climate change and build greener economies in his $5.8 trillion budget plan released Monday. But it's unclear whether Congress will deliver anywhere near that amount — and failure to do so could undercut progress at the crucial next round of United Nations climate talks. Out of more than $11 billion total, approximately $1.6 billion would go to the Green Climate Fund, which finances climate mitigation and adaptation projects in developing countries, according to a White House fact sheet. If Congress fails to deliver significant...

Long before the Incas rose to power in Peru and began to celebrate their sun god, a little known civilization was building the earliest known astronomical observatory in the Americas. While not quite as old as sites like Stonehenge, these ancient ruins, known as Chankillo, are considered a "masterpiece of human creative genius", holding unique features not seen anywhere else in the world. Based in the coastal desert of Peru, the archaeological site famously contains a row of 13 stone towers, which together trace the horizon of a hill, north to south, like a toothy bottom grin. 1920px ThirteenTowersOfChanquilloFromFortress The...

Much has been made of Joe Biden’s instantly reversed call for regime change in Moscow. Speaking in Warsaw, the president said of Vladimir Putin, “For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power.” The words sent his staffers scrambling to cleanup on Aisle Three and prompted European leaders to firmly distance themselves from Washington. ... Yet as hair-raising as Biden’s Warsaw declaration was, it could be charitably—okay, extra-charitably—interpreted as a mere gaffe. Indeed, the administration’s line is that Biden was referring to Putin exercising power over Russia’s neighbors, not Russia itself. Or something. Like I said, it’s a stretch, ......

Republicans say the White House did not include in materials given to the Judiciary Committee a grisly child porn case in which Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson departed significantly below probation office recommendation – and are raising questions of whether the White House "intentionally left it out," which the White House disputes. Jackson, President Biden's Supreme Court nominee, sentenced the case less than a year ago as she was about to be elevated to the D.C. Circuit Court. Titled U.S. v. Cane, it involved "over 6,500 files depicting children appearing to be of elementary, middle and high school ages, engaged in...

Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) said he hasn't decided how he will vote on Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the Supreme Court and that he's doing a "deeper dive" than the last time he assessed her. Romney voted against Jackson's appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 2021 when she was nominated by President Joe Biden. However, the senator told CNN's Kasie Hunt in a clip aired on Monday that he hadn't decided how he'd cast his vote this time. If she's confirmed by the Senate, Jackson will become the first Black woman ever...
