China has doubled down on its response to accusations from the Morrison government over its military conduct, delivering a stern warning to Australia. On Monday, Beijing rejected claims from Canberra it had acted in a dangerous manner by shining a laser at an Australian aircraft in waters off the Northern Territory and instead flipped the accusations, saying it was Australia who was in fact the aggressor towards its naval vessel. And on Tuesday, in response to Prime Minister Scott Morrison insisting Australia's air force had every right to be in close proximity to the vessel, China's foreign ministry spokesperson Wang...

In a report by Bakersfield ABC affiliate KERO-TV, gas station customers expressed being overwhelmed by the extremely high gas prices. They’re too damn high,” one customer told reporters, adding it’s made commuting much more difficult as she normally fills her tank three times a week. Another customer remarked he’s paying over $110 to fill up his 25-gallon tank, with yet another customer saying his 30-gallon tank would cost $150 to fill up. In addition to high demand, the expensive fuel cost is directly correlated to the price of crude oil hitting $99 a barrel as fears increase the Biden administration...

Barbara Campbell was walking through a New York City subway station during rush hour when her world abruptly went dark. For four years, Campbell had been using a high-tech implant in her left eye that gave her a crude kind of bionic vision, partially compensating for the genetic disease that had rendered her completely blind in her 30s. “I remember exactly where I was: I was switching from the 6 train to the F train,” Campbell tells IEEE Spectrum. “I was about to go down the stairs, and all of a sudden I heard a little ‘beep, beep, beep’ sound.”...

No, no, no, no, no. Dear God, no. Hillary Clinton is seriously mulling a run in 2024. There’s simply no other way to interpret her speech at Thursday’s New York state Democratic Party Convention. Like the Tracy Flick she is, Clinton could barely make it through name-checking Gov. Kathy Hochul before eagerly leapfrogging into national politics. Apologies to Tracy Flick. At least she knew how to win an election. Not enough that Hillary carpetbagged her way into a New York state seat in the US Senate, itself a pretext for her first failed presidential run. Nope, Hillary had to...

[Catholic Caucus] The FSSP and Pope Francis’ Roller-CoasterThe Wild RideIt took some time for everyone to adjust to the violent overthrow of thirteen years’ pastoral arrangements, policies, and attitudes by Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter Traditionis Custodes (TC), not least because of the way it was promulgated, to come into immediate effect, on a Friday. The implications needed thinking through, canon law advice needed to be considered, the practical possibilities in implementation needed to be worked out. Just as things were settling down, another document came out: the Responsa ad dubia, which presented itself as an interpretation of TC, but in...

President Biden said Tuesday that it is "critical" his administration works to tamp down any rise in gas prices in the U.S. due to Russian troops deployments in Ukraine and Western sanctions against the move.“I want to limit the pain the American people are feeling at the gas pump. This is critical to me,” Biden said in remarks at the White House. He announced that the U.S. would sanction Russian sovereign debt and Russian elites as well as Russian bank VEB and its military bank in response to Moscow's deployment of troops to regions in eastern Ukraine.“As we respond, my...

"What do you think I'm gonna say, I'm gonna say f**k Joe Biden," the unidentified man replied. The shocked reporter said "oh no no no, we're not doing that" before walking away to...

Explanation: What did the first quasars look like? The nearest quasars are now known to involve supermassive black holes in the centers of active galaxies. Gas and dust that falls toward a quasar glows brightly, sometimes outglowing the entire home galaxy. The quasars that formed in the first billion years of the universe are more mysterious, though. Featured, recent data has enabled an artist's impression of an early-universe quasar as it might have been: centered on a massive black hole, surrounded by sheets of gas and an accretion disk, and expelling a powerful jet. Quasars are among the most distant...
