BEIJING (AP) — Competition at the Beijing Olympics began Wednesday night with four curling stones sliding down sheets of ice in the venue where Michael Phelps won a record eight swimming gold medals at the Summer Olympics 14 years ago. The clanking of granite stones slamming into each other and the shouting and sweeping of the curlers were more pronounced than normal in the mostly empty arena. A South Jersey school district says food deliveries placed by students are resulting in security problems. West Deptford School District's superintendent says students are ordering food through apps like DoorDash and UberEats and drivers are showing up to a side door of the high school. The National Weather Service on Tuesday night upgraded its winter storm watch to a winter storm warning for North and Central Texas. The warning is in effect from 3 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday for most of the region, according to the weather service’s Dallas-Fort Worth office. A recent NPR report quotes a Maryland mother who complains that you risk being tarred as "a psychotic, anti-vax right-winger" if you dare to question whether children should be forced to wear face masks in day care and K-12 schools. US competitive swimming's governing body has updated its policy on the eligibility of transgender athletes. A three-person medical panel will now determine whether "prior physical development of the athlete as a male" gives transgender swimmers an unfair advantage, USA Swimming says.
