Ephesians 3

A Prayer for the Ephesians

14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family[a] in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

Our Father,
Who Art in Heaven,
Blessed Be Your Glorious Name Forever!
We Come Into Your Holy Presence
With Praise and Singing.
For You Alone Are Worthy,
You Alone Are LORD,
You Alone Are The One True God!
Ancient of Days,

LORD of Hosts,

Let all that has been Concealed
Be Revealed.

Father, We Pray For The Peace Of Jerusalem,

of Our Own Nation,
and Lead us all to Godly Repentance.
Create in Us Clean Hearts, Oh LORD,
and Renew a Right Spirit Within Us.

1 In you, O Lord, I seek refuge;
do not let me ever be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me.
2 Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me.

3 You are indeed my rock and my fortress;
for your name’s sake lead me and guide me,
4 take me out of the net that is hidden for me,

those who see me in the street flee from me.

I have become like a broken vessel.
13 For I hear the whispering of many—
terror all around!—
as they scheme together against me,
as they plot to take my life.

14 But I trust in you, O Lord;
I say, ‘You are my God.’
15 My times are in your hand;
deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.
16 Let your face shine upon your servant;
save me in your steadfast love.
17 Do not let me be put to shame, O Lord,
for I call on you;
let the wicked be put to shame;
let them go dumbfounded to Sheol.
18 Let the lying lips be stilled
that speak insolently against the righteous
with pride and contempt.

19 O how abundant is your goodness
that you have laid up for those who fear you,
and accomplished for those who take refuge in you,
in the sight of everyone!
20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them
from human plots;
you hold them safe under your shelter
from contentious tongues.

21 Blessed be the Lord,
for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me
when I was beset as a city under siege.
22 I had said in my alarm,
‘I am driven far* from your sight.’
But you heard my supplications
when I cried out to you for help.

23 Love the Lord, all you his saints.
The Lord preserves the faithful,
but abundantly repays the one who acts haughtily.
24 Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the Lord.

Pray For The Peace of Jerusalem




As Mike and I threaded our way through the souks and bazaars of Old City, Jerusalem, we were astounded by the many shops along the Via Dolorosa. These shops were overflowing with goods: everything from embroidered caftans and checked keffiyehs, to watches, sunglasses, toiletries, and religious articles all jumbled together. Spices were sold from open burlap bags on the sidewalk and the aroma was indescribable. Some of the religious goods showed a profound ignorance of what people actually believe, as they mixed and matched imagery from all the different faith traditions. Some of these were a bit amusing. As we jostled along, Mike stopped suddenly and pointed at a prayer rug that was hanging on display. It had all the traditional designs woven into it, complete with the pointed mihrab which indicates the direction of Mecca. But THIS prayer rug had something different. Beautifully knotted, and centered in the mihrab, was an iconic portrait of...are you ready...ELVIS. Mike and I both "lost it" right there in the midst of the shoppers, tourists, and pilgrims. People must have thought we had gone mad. For years afterward, Mike spoke of the "Elvis Prayer Rug" on the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. Mike said he wished he had bought it, because nobody believed his story. But as Rush Limbough used to say, "You Can't Make This Stuff Up."

Just as it was in Paul's time, Ephesus is a big tourist destination. The Temple of Diana with its massive statue of the goddess was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. As I mentioned yesterday, Antony and Cleopatra met for the first time in Ephesus, and their love affair changed History. Like Jerusalem of today, the souks and bazaars were filled with souvenirs and religious artifacts for the tourists to bring home with them. Commerce, tourism, and the entire economy were dependent upon Ephesus being considered a "Holy City". Since it was an international seaport and a tourist destination, a curious mixture of religions and cults filled the city. Authentic religions, secret societies, sex cults, magic, and the occult all flourished side-by-side in a profitable syncretism that made Ephesus like a twisted amalgam of "Vatican and Vegas".

And then...Along Came Paul.

Paul's preaching was so powerful that many turned to the One True God and burned thousands of dollars worth of their occult books and scrolls. This was not a "Book Burning" like the ones in 1930's Germany, (or even like Savonarola's "Bonfire of the Vanities"), but a sincere, voluntary, ridding oneself of the old life in order to embrace the New Life in Christ. However, this did not sit well with the artisans and rulers who made their living off the status of Ephesus as a "Holy City".

And so, Christians in Ephesus were not tolerated as all the other "religions" were. They were considered a threat to the economy, a threat to the culture, a threat to the status of the city as a World Wonder Tourist Destination, and a threat to social order.

Today's Passage is Paul's Prayer for the people he knew in that city. Tomorrow we will read his instructions on how to combat the persecution and be victorious.

(And, no. It doesn't involve an ELVIS Prayer Rug!)

Come and Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem, For Our FRiends in Need, For Persecuted Believers, and For Our Beloved Nation.

The Gospel threatened the other religions’ pocketbook and power of over people.
