US competitive swimming's governing body has updated its policy on the eligibility of transgender athletes.
A three-person medical panel will now determine whether "prior physical development of the athlete as a male" gives transgender swimmers an unfair advantage, USA Swimming says.
There will also be testosterone tests for 36 months before competitions.
It comes as a transgender Pennsylvania university athlete has been smashing female swimming records.
The new policy was released on Tuesday and is effective immediately.
In a statement, USA Swimming said it "has and will continue to champion gender equity and the inclusivity of all cisgender and transgender women and their rights to participate in sport, while also fervently supporting competitive equity at elite levels of competition".
The policy for elite athletes, it said, "acknowledges a competitive difference in the male and female categories and the disadvantages this presents in elite head-to-head competition".
USA Swimming cited data showing that the top-ranked female athlete in 2021 would on average be ranked below 536th on male events that year.
The new policy "relies on science and medical evidence-based methods to provide a level-playing field for elite cisgender women", USA Swimming said.
They added that the policy serves "to mitigate the advantages associated with male puberty and physiology".

Eventually these governing bodies are going to paint themselves into a corner where they are forced to admit that only ONE category of sports competition — i.e., “competitors” (without any regard for gender distinction)— can be justified in the insane asylum they’ve created for themselves. Once that happens, they’ll just shut down rather than admit that women aren’t actually “equal” to men after all.
Tubercle size will still be bigger in males, enabling a longer rotational lever arm from the joint axis, this greatest rotational force upon the joint. This will still exist even if no testosterone for 20 years.
A “committee” is going to evaluate each biological male who wants to swim as a female? Based on what?
You got balls? You’re a boy.
An actual ground combat war with a peer-level enemy will also be quite revealing.

Ya know I would feel differently about this but the very people who say “if he feels like a woman than he is a woman” are the students who now feel that they have no chance to win against her/him/he/she/IT. I hear students all the time say-oh he thinks he is a woman. Well then swim against this man who THINKS he is a woman and stop complaining. We told you so. Now do not come crying to us when you realize this was a BAD idea. And your parents will probably still send in donations to the college as alumns. If SHE is really committed then cut off your male parts but SHE wont do this because she is not that committed. Easy to say, “I want to play a girl for now to win all the prizes”.
CYA for sure....but it’s pathetic. It’s an attempt to please everyone but will please nobody. The LGBT crowd will cry ‘discrimination’ yet allowing for a subjective decision around whether a male can compete with girls - which will always be unfair for them.
This should be HEAVILY rejected, force them to choose the CORRECT position...males play with other males otherwise it is just cheating.
I’m truly offended at being called a cisgender every time the media discusses gender.
Maybe I should celebrate it, but I’m sick of having to do and say things on the trans agends’s terms!
Maybe this Laz fellow, well known by many on this board, could be the decision maker based on his “”hit it” factors.
I get a sense that I’m in a distinct minority here on this subject, but I’ve been laughing my ass off over this story since it starting getting media coverage.
