South Jersey students ordering food to high school causing security issues, district says

A South Jersey school district says food deliveries placed by students are resulting in security problems.

West Deptford School District's superintendent says students are ordering food through apps like DoorDash and UberEats and drivers are showing up to a side door of the high school.

There were 17 incidents on Monday where students needed to come outside to get their food, officials said.

"The issue is, it's school security," said Superintendent Greg Cappello. "We run a very secure school. We want to make sure doors that are locked remain locked through the school day so that nobody can get in there, and students aren't opening those doors for anyone."

Some high schoolers told Action News they know it's not the right way to do things.

"We shouldn't be letting them in through like side doors and things, but if the school allowed us to, it wouldn't be a problem," said freshman Sierra Kaloko.

[Spicoli has had a pizza delivered to class]

Mr. Hand: Am I hallucinating here? Just what in the hell do you think you’re doing?

Jeff Spicoli: Learning about Cuba, and having some food.

Mr. Hand: Mr. Spicoli, you’re on dangerous ground here. You’re causing a major disturbance on my time.

Jeff Spicoli: I’ve been thinking about this, Mr. Hand. If I’m here and you’re here, doesn’t that make it our time? Certainly, there’s nothing wrong with a little feast on our time.

Mr. Hand: [takes away box of pizza from Spicoli] You’re absolutrly right, Mr. Spicoli. It is our time. Yours, mine and everyone else’s in this room. But it is my class.

[calls up a couple of students]

Mr. Hand: Mr. Spicoli has been kind enough to bring us a snack. Be my guest. Help yourselves. Get a good one.

If it’s like my old school, it’s “refried beans and horse meat”.

Per “Todd” at my old Jr. High 1979-1981...

It’s sad how our society has changed that this is a “security issue.” Five years ago, I was a guest speaker at a class in a rural high school of about 150 students. When I showed up, there were no security guards or buzz-in systems. I just walked right in. There was no one in the front office, so I just walked down the hallways until I found the classroom. It was like the America I grew up in, where schools were safe places. The next month, I spoke at a high school in a bigger community - police officers at the front door, metal detectors, and I was given a security pass to put around my neck.

Not really. The high school generation just before me was allowed to, GASP, leave campus for lunch!

Almost like they were being treated as human beings and not wards of the state.

This changed rapidly just before I got to high school and, during my time went from “stay on campus” to yellow tape markers being placed on the floor around the cafeteria where we had to stay inside of. For “our” safety, of course.

After that I heard that you couldn’t even leave the cafeteria and then they went to assigned seating in the cafeteria.

Who’s “spoiled” again or is this just progressive conditioning for a police state?

Some kids today are waaay more morally bankrupt than they were 50 years ago. How do you know the kids aren't being delivered drugs or weapons?

I agree with the school. And any kid that starts mouthing off to the staff about the food in the cafeteria should be suspended until they can learn respect for school officials.

who told these kids they could chose what rules to obey or not obey?

Maybe if the school had decent food, students wouldn’t need to order outside food. check out school lunches.
