A Republican National Committee member and former Trump adviser is asking the party to vote Thursday on a resolution demanding that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy expel Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger from the House GOP conference for their participation on the Democrats' Jan. 6 investigation committee. Cheney, of Wyoming, and Kinzinger, of Illinois, two vocal critics of former President Donald Trump inside his own party, agreed to join the Jan. 6 committee on their own after McCarthy was denied the right to pick Republicans to serve on the panel. They have since become outcasts from much of their...

A mere 44% of Americans have enough savings to cover an unplanned expense of $1,000, according to a Bankrate.com survey. The number means that the majority of Americans would need to use other methods, aside from their personal savings, to pay for an emergency expense. While the findings may be surprising to some, they represent an improvement compared to last year, when 39% said they have enough money saved for a $1,000 emergency expense. Greg McBride, chief financial analyst for Bankrate.com, says, “While the ability to cover an unplanned $1,000 expense from savings is the best we’ve seen over the...

I grew up hearing that mental health disorders and illnesses of every kind were evil. Because I was told these things from an isolated world of fundamentalist Christianity, I was not surprised to see Pastor Greg Locke’s sermon suggesting autism, epilepsy and other mental health disorders are actually demon possession. I’ve heard this countless times while sitting in the pews of independent fundamental Baptist churches. A screaming child was said to be a rebellious child who the devil was using. I recall the preachers saying often, “How many lost souls did those ‘tantrums’ lead into hell?,” berating children and the...

Moderna has launched a trial of a HIV vaccine which uses the same breakthrough mRNA technology harnessed for its Covid jab. The US pharmaceutical giant has recruited 56 volunteers who do not have HIV to test its jab. The first participants were dosed up at George Washington University last month, officials revealed. There is currently no cure for HIV, which affects approximately 100,000 Britons and 1.2million Americans. Although there are prevention drugs, they need to be taken daily. Having a one-time shot that offers lifetime protection could be a breakthrough for the disease that has claimed millions of lives. Moderna...

This update from The Hill doesn’t sound encouraging. A bipartisan group in the Senate have met for weeks to hash out some needed reforms to the Electoral Count Act and firming up protections for election workers in the wake of the 2020 debacle. Among the areas of broad agreement are restrictions on challenges to electors and a formal recognition of the already-extant ceremonial role played by the Vice President.

One of President Biden picks for the Federal Reserve Board has called for black Americans to receive reparations for decades of slavery and economic discrimination. Details emerged in the week when Republican are expected to grill Lisa Cook, an economics professor at Michigan State University, about whether her public views would prevent her being a nonpartisan Fed official. Biden announced Cook's nomination on Jan. 14 and, if confirmed, she would be the first black woman on the seven-person board. But Republicans are signaling a tough confirmation, starting with her views on reparations. 'Everybody benefited from slavery. Everybody,' Cook said in...

KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Multan Sultans overcame Shadab Khan’s blistering 91 off 42 balls to beat Islamabad United by 20 runs and notch their fourth successive win in the Pakistan Super League on Tuesday. Powerful half-centuries by Tim David (71) and Rillee Rossouw (67 not out) had lifted Multan to 217-5 as the defending champion smashed 93 runs off the last five overs against Islamabad fast bowlers. Islamabad skipper Shadab duly capitalized on three dropped catches and kept his team in the hunt of a record PSL run-chase by hitting nine sixes and five fours. But the two-time champion Islamabad...

Obama nungara. Credit: Pierre Gros Citizen science reveals the presence of the flatworms in gardens in three quarters of metropolitan France. One of the consequences of globalization is the inadvertent human-mediated spread of invasive species. The presence of a new invader, named Obama nungara, is reported in France by an international team led by Jean-Lou Justine of ISYEB (Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France). This is the first study of this invasion, reported in an article published in the open-access journal PeerJ. I have never believed there is a “best way” to cook any particular food. I have my favorites, and recognize that some techniques are more effective than others, but there is no one, perfect way to fry an egg. (There are at least eight.) Culture, personal experience, access to ingredients, and preference all influence how we enjoy food, and cooking lets one tailor their meals to these preferences. (Besides cost, I think this is one of the primary reasons people bother cooking at all.) Some people like chewy bacon, some people like it shatteringly crisp, and some like it microwaved...

Lockdowns in the U.S. and Europe had little or no impact in reducing deaths from COVID-19, according to a new analysis by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. The lockdowns during the early phase of the pandemic in 2020 reduced COVID-19 mortality by about 0.2%, said the broad review of multiple scientific studies. “We find no evidence that lockdowns, school closures, border closures, and limiting gatherings have had a noticeable effect on COVID-19 mortality,” the researchers wrote. But the research paper said lockdowns did have “devastating effects” on the economy and contributed to numerous social ills. “They have contributed to reducing...

They were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were both pronounced dead, the bureau said. Meanwhile, it added, “Two additional inmates were transported to a local hospital for further medical assessment and treatment.”...
