One of President Biden picks for the Federal Reserve Board has called for black Americans to receive reparations for decades of slavery and economic discrimination.
Details emerged in the week when Republican are expected to grill Lisa Cook, an economics professor at Michigan State University, about whether her public views would prevent her being a nonpartisan Fed official.
Biden announced Cook's nomination on Jan. 14 and, if confirmed, she would be the first black woman on the seven-person board.
But Republicans are signaling a tough confirmation, starting with her views on reparations.
'Everybody benefited from slavery. Everybody,' Cook said in a September 2020 EconTalk podcast, in which she described her research into inequality.
That includes universities that bought and sold slaves, she continued, to insurance companies that underwrote ships: Everybody benefited apart from slaves themselves.
So, I think that we absolutely need some sort of reckoning with that,' she said. '
'There are many proposals on the table to study the possibility of reparations, many economic proposals being put forward, and I think they should all be taken seriously.' ***

“Everybody benefited from slavery. Everybody,’ Cook said”
Including the progeny of slaves.
We have paid big time. The dems have been taking our money and funneling it to their favorite victim group, all the while preventing from them from getting a job and getting out of the poverty the democrats put them in.
Dems have been allowing them to commit crime, especially crime against Whitey.
We’ve paid reparations. Reparations are owed to us.
As do the African tribes that captured and enslaved their fellow Africans for sale and barter to the European's.
They were, after all, the "tip of the spear" (pun intended) of the slave trade.
Tip: not even Al Sharpton or the rev-uh-rund (typed in my best Rush Limbaugh impersonation) Jessie Jackson are old enough to have been slaves, nor even Joe Biden old enough to have owned slaves. Calling it "reparations" is a lie.
The origins of the word “slave” is from the word “Slav”, or Slavic people. White Europeans were the first to be called “slaves” so blacks need to stop appropriating my ancestor’s history!
slave (n.)
late 13c., “person who is the chattel or property of another,” from Old French esclave (13c.), from Medieval Latin Sclavus “slave” (source also of Italian schiavo, French esclave, Spanish esclavo), originally “Slav” (see Slav); so used in this secondary sense because of the many Slavs sold into slavery by conquering peoples.
The oldest written history of the Slavs can be shortly summarised—myriads of slave hunts and the enthralment of entire peoples. The Slav was the most prized of human goods. With increased strength outside his marshy land of origin, hardened to the utmost against all privation, industrious, content with little, good-humoured, and cheerful, he filled the slave markets of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It must be remembered that for every Slavonic slave who reached his destination, at least ten succumbed to inhuman treatment during transport and to the heat of the climate. Indeed Ibrāhīm (tenth century), himself in all probability a slave dealer, says: “And the Slavs cannot travel to Lombardy on account of the heat which is fatal to them.” Hence their high price.
The Arabian geographer of the ninth century tells us how the Magyars in the Pontus steppe dominated all the Slavs dwelling near them. The Magyars made raids upon the Slavs and took their prisoners along the coast to Kerkh where the Byzantines came to meet them and gave Greek brocades and such wares in exchange for the prisoners. [”The Cambridge Medieval History,” Vol. II, 1913]
From a potential Fed governor. If you want to destroy the US Dollar and launch an existential political crisis, this is how you do it. Well done!
Reparations for slavery should be paid for by those who owned slaves. Many who came here after slavery and those who did not own slaves should not have to pay for reparations. Actually most slave owners were either black or dems. Very few, if any, slave owners were repubs. So get the money from the original slave owners both black and dems. My family came here LONG after slavery was over so not a cent from my family. Go get the money from those responsible for it.
FJB’s plan is to give every African American $!00,000 and a free ride to Liberia.
Republicans will put on a show, then vote for this person anyway.
Reparations?
Why ? So more overweight black ladies can buy more expensive hair extensions and outlandish hairdos? So more black dudes can buy more bling and big screen TV’s?
That was all long ago . Get over it.
This part of what you said is hilarious. It was getting rid of "poll taxes" that created the welfare state.
The 24th amendment is what created the welfare state. That amendment got rid of the requirement to pay any sort of taxes at all to vote. Prior to that time, if you didn't pay taxes, you weren't allowed to vote.
This opened up an avenue for the corrupt government of Washington DC to bribe non taxpayers with taxpayer money to vote for them, and that's exactly what happened.
21 trillion spent on welfare since 1964.
So if we give reparations, what happens in 10 years when all the reparations money has been squandered?
My ancestors didn’t come here until after the civil war. Why should those who had nothing to slavery be forced to pay for it?
She's actually right. Most of the slave produced money went to the Northern states.
She's wrong about one thing though. Black families benefited enormously from slavery. Their lives in Africa would have been far worse than what they have here.
Alex Haley (Author of "Roots") was on a talk show and they asked him about his visit to Africa. What he said shocked them.
He said that after seeing first hand the utter poverty and sickness in Africa, he said every black person in America should get down on their knees and kiss that Confederate flag.
I used to have a link for this statement, but I haven't been able to find it now for several years.
Muhammad Ali was also asked the same question, and he said:
"Thank God my granddady got on that boat!"
Well not when their slave ships were bringing them over they weren't, but later these very same wealthy northern families all turned Republican.
Slavery benefited blacks people a lot more than whites in the long run.
Damn...I miss Rush!
Anyone who as been a slave should receive reparations from whoever held them. Since there are none alive that lived prior to emancipation, this seems a moot point. Furthermore, many of our families did not even enter this Nation to after the Civil War. Finally, 750,000 casualties on the slaves’ behalf is price enough.
I will happily pay reparations to any black person born before the passing of the 13th amendment to the Constitution.
