Second Week of Advent Matthew 11:11-15 Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus says to the crowds, “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent are taking it by force.” The title for Flannery O’Connor’s irresistibly powerful second and final novel, The Violent Bear It Away, is taken from the Douay-Rheims translation of this last phrase. This famously ambiguous passage has given rise to a variety of interpretations over the centuries. Many have taken it to mean that the kingdom of God is attacked by violent people (such as those who killed...

When contacted by Reason, Dallas police declined to give any specifics. The only comment provided was a statement that the squad "seized $106,829.00, from a 25-year-old female who is a resident of Chicago, IL., but...

Virginia Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin (R) on Wednesday pledged to withdraw the state from a regional carbon market comprising 10 coastal and New England states. In a speech at the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, Youngkin denounced the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) as a “carbon tax that is fully passed on to ratepayers” and said he would remove Virginia from the compact by executive order after taking office in January, according to a recording shared with The Hill. Youngkin specifically cited a request by the state’s primary electric utility, Dominion Energy, seeking to recover RGGI costs from customers.

You can support pre-K education and affordable child care and worry about climate change while understanding that policymakers need to get out of the way. =========================================================================== Should we ignore the costs of the "Build Back Better" bill and simply focus on the benefits? Wouldn't that be nice? Unfortunately, the most constructive criticisms of the legislation reveal why the magical thinking behind this monstrously expensive spending package will not improve American society. In urging us to focus less on costs, economist Alan Blinder asserts: "The House bill includes several real winners. Do you oppose universal pre-K education? You shouldn't; it works....

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) Europe director on Tuesday said COVID-19 vaccine mandates are an “absolute last resort,” emphasizing that such a measure should only be enforced if all other strategies have been exhausted. “Mandates around vaccination are an absolute last resort and only applicable when all feasible options to improve vaccination uptake have been exhausted,” Hans Kluge told reporters, according to Reuters. He said the effectiveness of requiring vaccinations is “very context specific,” noting that public trust in authorities is an important factor that must be thought about. “What is acceptable in one society and community may not be...

Early polls have Kelly leading between 4 and 9 points, never breaking above 44% of the vote. Arizona is considered a battleground state for 2022. Without Trump on the ticket, the winner of the crowded GOP primary has a great shot at victory. Kelly’s "aye" vote might be the nail in his coffin. Catherine Cortez Masto — Nevada Nevada is another state that Biden won...
