Sheriff charged with assault while trying to break up fight

HAZARD, Ky. (AP) — A sheriff has been charged with assaulting a teenage girl while trying to break up a fight at an eastern Kentucky high school, police said.

Owsley County Sheriff Brent Lynch, 47, is also part of the Owsley County High School coaching staff and intervened in a Dec. 3 fight during a girls’ basketball game at Perry County Central High School, Kentucky State Police said in a statement.

Trooper Matthew Gayheart told news outlets Lynch is alleged to have rushed the floor during the fight between players and struck a Perry County Central player while breaking up the fight.

An investigation led to a warrant being issued Tuesday charging Lynch with fourth-degree assault.

Owsley County Schools Superintendent Tim Bobrowski told news outlets Lynch has been suspended for one game and both teams have suspended four student-athletes for two games.

I saw the video on another site. There were lots of white girls throwing lots of punches (yes, white girls). But it was hard to see what the sheriff did or didn’t do.

That wasn’t him I don’t think, the fella I think was pushed awY from the fracas by the black dude, then he was pushed towards the exit. Another fella led the girl back to,the benches, where she tried to yank herself away from him, and stumbled, in the process it looked like.

That all I saw too and she was clearly trying to re-enter the fray when she tripped after a mild shove. I that’s what they’re basing the charge on that’s nonsense.
