KENOSHA -- The judge in the Kyle Rittenhouse case denied more prosecution motions Monday at the last scheduled hearing before the trial is set to begin in a week. Assistant District Attorney Thomas Binger said he's concerned the defense will try to make the case about the police, by saying they encouraged Rittenhouse to wander around with an assault-style rifle in some sort of private law enforcement function, and that that would explain why Rittenhouse thought it was reasonable to shoot three people.

Several religious denominations have seen memberships fall in recent years, including among young adults and teens. A new survey suggests that many young people perceive a disconnect between themselves and the houses of worship that need believers to sustain their congregations. Half of young people ages 13 to 25 surveyed said they don’t think that religious institutions care as much as they do about issues that matter deeply to them, according to a report released Monday by the Springtide Research Institute, a nonpartisan nonprofit. Those issues include racial justice, gender equity, immigration rights, income inequality and gun control. Springtide tracks...

Japanese researchers showed that a low protein diet can accelerate brain degeneration in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease. More importantly, they found that Amino LP7—a supplement containing seven specific amino acids—can slow down brain degeneration and dementia development in these animals. Dr. Makoto Higuchi explains, "In older individuals, low protein diets are linked to poor maintenance of brain function. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins." First, the researchers studied how a low protein diet affects the brain in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease, which generally demonstrate neurodegeneration and abnormal protein aggregates called "Tau" aggregates in the brain. They...

Once an infection is under control, the body normally uses a biochemical messenger known as TGFβ to downgrade its immune response. In severe COVID-19, however, this messenger is released at the very beginning of the infection, thus blocking the early control of the pathogen by the innate immune system. The early production of the immune-dampening TGFβ messenger appears to be a hallmark of COVID-19 and has not been observed in other types of pneumonia. Correction of the immune system's faulty timing may therefore offer a new strategy for preventing severe disease. The innate immune response is the first line of...

The Higher Regional Court in Munich found the woman, identified only as Jennifer W., guilty of crimes against humanity for "enslavement resulting in the death of another" as well as being a member of a foreign terrorist group, the court's spokesperson Florian Gliwitzky told CNN. Gliwitzky said the husband, who is facing a separate trial in Frankfurt, subjected the Yazidi woman and her daughter to "daily abuse."

Keeping blood insulin levels within strict, healthy parameters is a daily goal for people with diabetes. But now, researchers from Japan have found that regulating blood insulin levels may even help lower the risk of getting COVID-19. In a study published this month in Diabetes, researchers from Osaka University have revealed that a protein called GRP78 helps the virus that causes COVID-19 bind to and enter cells. GRP78 is a protein that is found in adipose tissue (i.e., fat). Older, obese, and diabetic people are all more vulnerable to COVID-19 and, while the reasons for this are still not completely...

The Wisconsin Legislative Audit Bureau released its report on the 2020 election Friday, after receiving limited cooperation from officials. Auditors were able to interview 2 of 6 Wisconsin Election Commissioners. An additional commissioner provided written testimony, but the other three declined. Also, Auditors were not allowed to physically handle election-related materials from the City of Madison. Auditors tried to survey every municipal clerk in the state, but only 48% responded. Out of the 72 County clerks, 82% responded. Despite these barriers, the Auditors made several explosive discoveries. Among the most alarming problems identified in this audit is how WEC uses...
