Let's start with the obvious: "Basket of deplorables" is a weird turn of phrase. There are baskets and there are deplorable people, but pairing the two is the oddest of linguistic odd couples. Hillary Clinton said those three words in the final months of her 2016 presidential campaign, making rhetorical and political history. There were two kinds of Donald Trump supporters, she explained: Voters who feel abandoned and desperate, who she placed in one metaphorical basket, and those she called "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic and Islamophobic" - her "basket of deplorables." Trump - the same man who announced his candidacy...

People with type 2 diabetes can achieve "remission" by sustaining normal blood sugar levels for at least three months without taking diabetes medication. There is still a lot of uncertainty around how long remission will last and what factors are associated with a relapse. A person may require ongoing support to prevent a relapse or a hyperglycemic episode, and the long-term effects of remission on mortality, heart health and quality of life are not well understood. The authors developed the following criteria to help clinicians and researchers evaluate and study diabetes remission using more consistent terminology and methods: 1. Remission...

A video which has been claimed to show a condemned man being hanged from a helicopter seized by the Taliban appears to have been misleadingly captioned. The 11-second clip - which has over 2m views and has been shared thousands of times on Twitter - is blurred and doesn’t give a clear indication of what is going on. Further footage and still photographs seen by the BBC show that the man flying over the city of Kandahar is very much alive. These images show him wearing the Blackhawk helicopter’s diver’s winch and waving the Taliban flag. Several Afghanistan experts, quoting...

Speaking sorrowfully to the nation from the White House last week, President Biden lengthened a chain that was already far too long, a chain of presidential remorse — and vows of revenge — over the loss of American lives in faraway conflicts few Americans understand. This includes the President, Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, and more. The email reads: Given the heightened political and social atmosphere surrounding Afghanistan, it is important to remind...
