A coalition of state attorneys general on Wednesday announced a proposed $26 billion settlement with pharmaceutical companies associated with facilitating the opioid crisis. Under the settlement, the "big three" opioid distributors McKesson, Cardinal Health and Amerisource Bergen Drug would pay up to $21 billion over the next 18 years. Manufacturer Johnson & Johnson, meanwhile, would pay as much as $5 billion over the next nine years depending on how many state and local governments agree to suspend their opioid lawsuits. Elected Republican officials in a conservative Michigan county who gave themselves bonuses totalling $65,000 with federal Covid-19 relief funds said they would return the money – following days of criticism. The Shiawassee county commissioners acted after a prosecutor said the payments were illegal, the Argus-Press reported. Los Angeles County health officials reported more troubling COVID-19 increases on Tuesday. They confirmed more than 2,000 new cases, along with 15 additional deaths. And as case numbers continue to climb, more vaccinated people are now testing positive for the virus. The mayor of Seattle is calling on the city to rebuild its depleted police force after six separate shootings rocked Washington state's largest metropolitan area over the weekend.
