Moderna Inc announced on Wednesday that it has had officially begun trials of a flu shot with the new technology that was used to make its coronavirus vaccine. The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company's COVID-19 shot uses part of the virus's genetic code called messenger RNA, or mRNA, to get the body to recognize the pathogen and attack if a person becomes infected. Now, Moderna says it has doses the first participants in a clinical trial looking at an influenza vaccine using mRNA technology. Before the pandemic, mRNA technology was known about but was widely unexplored and unused by scientists. Now, many...

Consumer-members of Ohio electric cooperatives understand the benefits of renewable energy sources like wind and solar — endless supplies that can’t be used up, with little to no carbon footprint. Why, then, can’t Buckeye Power, the generation cooperative that provides electricity to the 25 member cooperatives in the state, switch to all renewable resources? This month, we attempt to answer why coal must remain an important part of our energy generation resources. Why do we STILL need coal? An important thing to know about electricity is that it's produced as you're using it. Why can't we switch to all renewables?...

John Bel Edwards vetoed during the regular session. The news conference will be held in Baton Rouge with multiple law enforcement officers in attendance. Advertisement A proposal to allow Louisiana residents to carry concealed weapons without a permit was rejected by Edwards, as anticipated. Law enforcement officials say vetoing the bill is dangerous, as it would eliminate permits needed. "The LEOs will discuss how the override of the veto would lead to more dangerous crimes...

The Ohio vaccine lottery didn't increase vaccine rates, according to a new study. GETTY The “Vax-a-Million" lottery run by the state of Ohio to get vaccination numbers up, didn’t actually increase the rate of people getting vaccinated despite early news reports to the contrary, according to a new study. The work led by researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) compared vaccination rates in Ohio with several states who had no lottery incentive in place. They found that couple of weeks after the lottery was launched, which included cash prizes and college scholarships for students, Ohio did indeed...

A German job site has been launched to let businesses search for “vaccine skeptic” workers, i.e. those who have not been vaccinated and who would not get the jab. The site, called Impffrei Work (vaccine-free work), was launched by a network of coronavirus skeptics in order “to counter the scientific narrative of the so-called pandemic”, Germany’s Spiegel magazine reports. The jobs advertised are in a variety of industries, from taxi drivers to tax advisors. Some of the jobs on the site include frequent contact with the most vulnerable, i.e. calling for workers in hospitals and care homes. Physiotherapists, social workers,...

This morning, Arizona State Senator Kelly Townsend informed us on how to protect ourselves against Vaccine Nazis. She shared this tweet telling us what we can do before the feds come asking for our papers. I have spoken to local law enforcement and if you don’t want the Federal government on your property asking about vaccines, they advise you to post a no trespassing sign in a visible location. This is a prerequisite to be able to charge someone for being there against your will.

While the Pope is in the Hospital…While the Pope is recovering in the hospital (best wishes for Jorge Mario Bergoglio that he gets well), it is only natural to reflect, by analogy, on the state of health of the Catholic Church.Multiple analyses now, both from the “right” as well as the “left,” say that the diagnosis is frightening: a comatose state. The number of people who go to church is decreasing, vocations are falling dramatically, the number of those who believe in eternal life and the resurrection continues to decrease. The “ABCs” of the faith are crumbling day by day...

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top disease expert in the U.S., drew ire on social media Wednesday when critics said he seemed to write off vaccine hesitancy as a purely political statement. Fauci gave an interview to MSNBC and talked about how important it is for Americans to get vaccinated. He said vaccines help protect the person receiving the jab, as well as family members and the community. He expressed frustration with those who continue to refuse the shots that he called highly effective and safe. "You’ve gotta ask: What is the problem?" he said. "Get over it. Get over this...

As the economy picks up in the wake of the Covid pandemic, concerns about inflation are also gaining steam. Already, prices on some goods, like cars, are noticeably higher, stoking fears that a sudden uptick in inflation will decrease purchasing power over time. Although consumers may pay more for everyday items, it’s not all bad news as far as household income and spending goes. Companies facing a labor shortage are also paying more to get workers to walk in the door.

Gays are coming for your children. Don’t take my word for it, take their word! Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra on Thursday addressed the pushback in response to the White House’s door-to-door vaccination effort to encourage people to get vaccinated. CNN “New Day” host Brianna Keilar asked Becerra about criticism the announcement received, saying it isn’t the government’s business knowing who and who has not been vaccinated. Becerra said it is “absolutely” the government’s business to know such information, reasoning that the government “has spent trillions of dollars” to protect Americans.

Overall, COVID-19 vaccination rates in Chicago are good. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 70% of Cook County adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine. But a closer look shows unequal rates depending on what neighborhood you’re in. A recent South Side Weekly report used city data to show that Chicago’s vaccine disparity is widening between wealthier parts of the city, like the Loop, and areas on the South and West sides with a majority of Black and brown residents. Health officials are continuing to urge the public to get vaccinated, especially...

And might increase the risk of side effects. Muscle relaxant drugs are largely ineffective for low back pain, despite being widely prescribed for this condition, suggests an analysis of the latest evidence published by The BMJ today. The findings show that muscle relaxants might reduce pain in the short term, but the effect is too small to be considered clinically meaningful, and there is an increased risk of side effects. But the researchers stress that the certainty of evidence is low and say large trials are urgently needed to resolve uncertainties around the use of these drugs for back pain....

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Researchers have detected a variant of coronavirus, first found in South America, in wastewater in southern Nevada, suggesting it is spreading in the community. Scientists at UNLV have found the Lambda variant, or C.37, in samples, Dr. Edwin Oh, an associate professor at the school’s Neurogenetics and Precision Medicine Lab, told the I-Team. Southern Nevada Water Authority scientists take samples from wastewater to see how much coronavirus is in our sewer system. Oh and other researchers analyze the samples, which help public health leaders find spikes and clusters before they can be identified through traditional testing...
