The Ohio vaccine lottery didn't increase vaccine rates, according to a new study. GETTY
The “Vax-a-Million" lottery run by the state of Ohio to get vaccination numbers up, didn’t actually increase the rate of people getting vaccinated despite early news reports to the contrary, according to a new study.
The work led by researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) compared vaccination rates in Ohio with several states who had no lottery incentive in place. They found that couple of weeks after the lottery was launched, which included cash prizes and college scholarships for students, Ohio did indeed see an increase in documented vaccination rates, with many news outlets reporting the lottery as a success.
However, the researchers found that this spike in vaccination rates actually happened all over the U.S., including in states with no lottery and suggest that widening eligibility of the vaccine at the same time was more likely to be responsible.
“Prior evaluations of the Ohio vaccine incentive lottery did not account for other changes in Covid-19 vaccination rates in the United States, such as those that may have been due to expansion of vaccination to ages 12-15," said Allan J. Walkey, MD, senior author of the study and Professor of medicine and physician at BUSM.
“Our results suggest that state-based lotteries are of limited value in increasing vaccine uptake. Therefore, the resources devoted to vaccine lotteries may be more successfully invested in programs that target underlying reasons for vaccine hesitancy and low vaccine uptake," said Walkey.
This concern is also reflected in this piece by Forbes contributor and behavioral scientist Joshua Liao, who suggests that although some vaccine lotteries might work in the short term, they could have negative consequences in the future.

In other words it worked exactly as planned.

They love to waste taxpayer money.
Those who want it should have to pay for it.
Does Ohio have that much money laying around in the state budget to toss away like that?
We all get the government we vote for.
Reminds me of an experiment in India during the 1960’s. In an effort to control population growth, the gov’t gave away a transistor radio (big deal back then) to all males who had a vasectomy. After several years, the gov’t noticed there wasn’t even a dent put in the population growth. They went back to the data and discovered that they had sterilized almost the entire male population...over age 50. Sounds like most gov’t programs.
Oh we pay for it. All of us. Just look at the stock chart for Moderna to see how much.
They probably used money from the new “highway gas tax” that was supposedly reserved just for highways...like the old highway gas tax was supposed to do.
“We” means that “I” pay for John Doe’s shot.
I don’t want that. I want John Doe to pay for John Doe’s shot.
Rigged? Absolutely. Does anyone believe for a moment that the State of Ohio would risk selecting a winner who had died or was dying from an adverse reaction to the experimental treatment?
Simply,if government has to bribe people and spend millions on marketing to jab people, that raises flags. If Biden didn’t steal the election, the biggest vaxx skeptics would be the left and now they are the biggest drug pushers of big pharma and big government.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
I love this news.
After the carrots come the sticks.
Absolutely!
“Winners” are picked, but not named immediately. Why? To verify that they are alive and not complaining of adverse effects.
Love it!
Yet DeWine says the project was successful. ???
I live in Ohio.
The Governor did more than give away 5M in our tax money; somewhere a small bridge didn’t get repaired or some other necessary and non wasteful thing didn’t get done.
👍👍👍
Well according to libs I own an assault pistol:-)
OHIO PING!
Please let me know if you want on or off the Ohio Ping list.

No Ohio doesn’t have the money laying around, they used Fed Gov Care Act monies which was supposed to be helping business and people get back to work and provide help to those most affected by COVID.
