In the work that I do, I stress the fact that we’re going to need more and more government coercion as we go forward as a more and more interdependent society. Our structures of democracy, which basically evolved in the 18th century, are not sufficient to carry the load of the government coercion that we now need. We need much more robust democratic mechanisms than what we have. The structure of elections gives you a clear majority that is legitimate, in almost every case, but it’s not sufficient. If we think about climate change and the tremendous burdens we need...

MSNBC “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough on Thursday weighed in on the growing sentiment for Rep. Liz Cheney’s (R-WY) ouster as the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference. The push is in response to her continued opposition to former President Donald Trump following the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. “It’s very funny,” Scarborough began. “I keep seeing these liberals writing op-eds going, ‘We don’t like you, Liz Cheney. What you’re doing is a good thing, but we don’t like you.’ The Cheneys don’t give a damn whether liberals like them or not. You don’t call Dick Cheney, her...

“Considering the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt . . .” (Hebrews 11:26). Trials can show that material things are inadequate to meet our deepest needs. We rely every day on material possessions—cars, computers, pagers, telephones, microwaves, radios, and TVs. These familiar conveniences make us feel as though it’s quite a hardship to cope without them. Therefore it’s difficult to avoid the pitfall Jesus warned about in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other....

When I talk about a great awakening, I mean what Paul describes as a revelation and enlightenment: “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power” (Ephesians 1:17-19, NKJV). Paul...

The Nile is the river in question. Without it, no war. “It is the cause of the war,” Churchill writes. “It is the means by which we fight, the end at which we aim.” On the Nile, the British could run their formidable gunboats into their enemy’s territory, upriver to its stronghold at Khartoum, itself located at the geostrategic chokepoint where the Blue and White Niles meet: “the great spout through which the merchandise collected from a wide area streams northwards to the Mediterranean Sea.” Just as the Suez Canal, completed in 1869, connected Europe to Asian ports beyond the...

President Biden has issued a National Day of Prayer proclamation in which the word "God" does not appear once. "I invite the citizens of our Nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I join all people of faith in prayers for spiritual guidance, mercy, and protection," Biden says in the proclamation. The lone use of the word "Lord" appears only once at the conclusion of the declaration as it pertains to the date: The word appears within the boilerplate phrase "in the year of our Lord two thousand...

It is a common these days to hear folks opine about how the glories of ancient science were snuffed out ignominiously by triumphalist, fanatical Christians sometime in the Dark Ages. Normally, specific instances of this destruction are not called out, save for the case of Hypatia of Alexandria who has been elevated by modern audiences to a sort of proto-feminist demi-goddess of science for her slaying at the hands of a Christian mob. Yet, for those who maintain the trope that Christianity was responsible for the destruction of centuries of amazing scientific advancements wrought by Greco-Roman civilization, please allow me...

“Corruption is not a disagreeable characteristic of the Mexican political system,” Gabriel Zaid observed in La economia presidencial. “It is the system.”“It is widely known,” Mexican journalist Ricardo Ravelo wrote in June 2018, “how the General Administration of Customs … operates a network of officials linked to large-scale smuggling in the country’s 49 customs offices.” Under previous central administrators Aristotle Núñez Sánchez and Osvaldo Santin Quiroz, Mexico’s Tax Administration Service (SAT) became known for “…unleashing smuggling throughout the country.” Smuggling, said Ravelo, is a business that operates in Mexico without a containment dam, under the protection of senior officials at...

Maison Nico is a new pâtisserie and market in San Francisco's Jackson Square, where delicacies like pâté en croûte, terrine, and brioche feuilletée compete for one's attention. Then again, everything pales in comparison to them. The lacquered, artfully layered half-domes. The aspics. If you're not accustomed to thinking of aspic as an object of desire, chef Nicholas Delaroque aims to change that. "Most people are familiar with pâté, but the aspic is the eye-catcher," he says. "Once people discover it, they really enjoy it." What makes sense for a Frenchman may not to the average American. Many consider aspic, a...

The current cultural miasma we find ourselves in might lead you to ask “where did we go wrong?” To which I reply “what do you mean ‘we’ Kemosabe? It certainly wasn’t us who determined language had to evolve to the point of meaninglessness in order to accommodate the sensitivities of the loonies amongst us.Nor was it us who determined that our elections needed to be “fortified” to ensure victory to the cabal. “Saved” – I don’t think that word means what you think it means, TimeThe simple term “rigged” was so old school, and had so many negative connotations.Time has published...

DONALD Trump’s new Twitter account has been SUSPENDED, just one day after it was created, according to reports. The @DJTDesk account, which was set up by his communications team to share statements, was taken down on Wednesday evening for “violating the rules.” Trump – who boasted 88 million followers during his time in charge- was indefinitely suspended from Twitter in January, following the shocking US Capitol riot that left five dead. This new @DJTDesk account appeared to be an innovative way to allow the former President to communicate directly with users on various social media platforms. However, that has quickly...

LifeSite News, a major pro-life news website, reports that Facebook has permanently blacklisted its page over “false information about COVID-19” and “vaccine discouraging information.” In a quick series of notices and emails to LifeSiteNews’ marketing department, Facebook delivered the shocking news, accusing LifeSite of publishing “false information about COVID-19 that could contribute to physical harm.” Facebook also said that they deplatform Facebook pages that publish “vaccine discouraging information on the platform.” Facebook cited an article posted on April 10, 2021, headlined “COVID vaccines can be deadly for some.” “Much like when LifeSite was removed from YouTube, this comes with little...

President Biden apparently went off the rails with a heartfelt story about how he’d ridden some 1.5 million miles on Amtrak and being personally congratulated by an Amtrak conductor — who had actually retired some 20 years before. “When I became vice president, one of the Capitol Hill newspapers estimated that I had taken more than 7,000 round trips on Amtrak over my career. I think that’s an exaggeration,” Biden said on Friday when he helped the nation’s passenger rail system celebrate 50 years, Fox News reported.

The Biden administration has made the fight against climate change a central part of its $2 trillion infrastructure plan. This legislation, if it ever sees the light of day, would shovel more than $100 billion of subsidies toward boosting the market for electric vehicles, as well as updating the country's electric grid to make it allegedly more resilient to climate disasters. All of these "investments" sound well and good on paper, but if you genuinely care about the environment, don't hold your breath for any real progress. For one thing, Biden's plan is mostly a giant handout to corporations that...
