State Health Commissioner Norman Oliver addressed the media Friday as Gov. Ralph Northam looked on. Oliver said state law defines nursing homes and assisted care facilities as “a person,” shielding data on cases and deaths by facility as personal medical information. DANIEL SANGJIB MIN/TIMES-DISPATCH The number of COVID-19 deaths that Virginia counts in long-term care facilities nearly tripled overnight on Friday, rising to 311. The increase came as the state’s top health official shielded nursing homes and other facilities from disclosing cases and deaths, saying the facilities are defined as “people” under state law. The state’s tally of COVID-19...

Former U.S. Senator Chris Dodd, who is linked to corporate bailouts, lobbying for Hollywood, and alleged sexual assault of a waitress at a restaurant, is among seven individuals appointed to Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential selection task force. Dodd, the 75-year-old from Connecticut, will be joined by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, D-Del., and former Biden counsel Cynthia Hogan. Three other appointees will work specifically on vetting chosen candidates; Bob Bauer, husband to former Obama Communications Director Anita Dunn, Obama homeland security advisor Lisa Monaco, and law professor Dana Remus. Dodd also chaired the Senate Banking Committee...

They don't make television comedies like they used to, and few were ever made as brilliantly as "Reno 911." They don’t make television comedies like they used to, and few were ever made as brilliantly as “Reno 911,” the jewel of Comedy Central’s glorious mid-aughts lineup. But it’s back, and better than pretty much every new comedy on air right now, despite clocking in around seven minutes an episode. In these trying times, happiness is an elusive sensation. The unbridled joy I felt one minute into the reboot’s premiere, having realized “Reno 911” is returning to us in fine form,...

When STAT first compared projected U.S. deaths from Covid-19, in early April, there seemed to be a glimmer of good news: A prominent model had just lowered its estimate for total deaths through Aug. 4 from about 100,000 to 60,000, reflecting the apparent success of three weeks of social distancing across much of the country. On Wednesday, April 29, the country blew past 60,000, more than three months before the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected. (The 60,000 almost certainly undercounts Covid-19 deaths, by about 9,000.) IHME, whose model has been criticized by many epidemiologists, now says the most...

The New York Times on Friday penned an editorial calling on the Democratic National Committee to investigate Tara Reade's sexual assault allegations made against former Vice President Joe Biden. The editorial board made the case that the DNC had an obligation to look into the allegations because Biden is the presumptive Democratic nominee. As is so often the case in such situations, it is all but impossible to be certain of the truth. But the stakes are too high to let the matter fester — or leave it to be investigated by and adjudicated in the media. Mr. Biden is...

Governors across the country, even if their coronavirus numbers are in decline or never really spiked at all, don’t seem to want to end stay-at-home orders or open their economy for fear that they will be blamed for what happens. They refuse to adapt to what is a new reality and so almost none of us can prosper. In fact, one headline suggests our nation’s capital might be closed for another three months — something that has never been done, even though we have faced far greater threats. The reason why is obvious: any smart politician knows their re-election chances...

Have you ever wondered why you never heard a word about "social distancing" when swine flu struck during Obama's first term? More and more people are aware that COVID-19’s threat has been exaggerated. But very few realize that “social distancing” is total b.s. regardless.

Jason Kenney is clearly not a fan of Prime Minister Trudeau's new ban of 1,500 firearms. In response, he is considering appointing Alberta's own chief firearms officer to replace the CFO from Ottawa. “In response to today’s announcement from Ottawa, our government is actively considering appointing Alberta’s own chief firearms officer (CFO) to replace the CFO appointed by Ottawa,” said Kenney in a statement. The ban on 1,500 new firearms was announced Friday morning by Trudeau in a press conference. "These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the...

Never look a gift horse in the mouth, they say, though when Mayor Bill de Blasio is on hand, the other end of the animal is usually involved. Gotham’s chief executive this week might have accepted with some grace an offer of assistance from a crisis-tested, and devoutly Christian, emergency-relief organization — but he gave it the fisheye instead. It seems that in Blasville, evangelical Christians armed with tons of the sophisticated medical equipment so sorely lacking in the city right now, plus the expertise to use it, are presumptively suspect. And are perhaps to be expelled. Thus it was...

Prayers up for all the families suffering from the impact of this virus. And we're still praying that the spread starts fading with the warmer Spring weather and that an effective treatment and vaccine are developed before the next flu season starts. And we pray that our people are allowed to go back to work very soon and that our economy comes roaring back. Meanwhile, we may be hurt and slowed down somewhat, but we have faith in the long-run that "what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger." God willing, America will survive and we will survive and we...

A California city official said COVID-19 should be allowed to run its course, killing elderly and homeless residents to “fix what is a significant burden on our society.” Now his public position could be a pandemic-era casualty, and he’s calling that a violation of his rights. Ken Turnage, a member of the city planning commission in Antioch, said in a now-deleted April 23 Facebook post that coronavirus lockdowns should be lifted to “let nature take its course.” “We would have significant loss of life, we would lose many elderly, that would reduce burdens in our defunct Social Security System, health...

On this date in 1923, the only woman ever executed in Alberta’s history was hanged at Fort Saskatchewan. Alberta had introduced alcohol prohibition in 1916. Florence Lassandro and her husband Carlo, Italian immigrants, were in the profitable contraband business that resulted, employed by the “Emperor Pic” — a rum-running godfather named Emilio Picariello...So the women’s movement in 1920s Canada was deeply sensitive to any appearance of special pleading which appeared to place adult women on any footing lesser to adult men. A Prohibition gangster who shot a cop would surely be hanged if a man; indeed, Emilio Picariello, slated to...

Here is a little history on the success of genuine grassroots movements and citizen led protest rallies: In 1990, New Jersey had a dictatorial governor named Jim Florio. There were two major protests held in Trenton New Jersey that summer by a true grassroots group called “Hands Across New Jersey” (HANJ). It was a protest against Florio’s 2.8 Billion tax Increase which included everything including, ironically, toilet paper (people were actually mailing used TP to his office in protest). HANJ was also protesting Florio’s “assault weapons” ban, which effectively made criminals of about 700,000 New Jerseyans overnight. The law did...

Prosecutors are scrutinizing communications between a New York doctor with ties to the White House and conservative commentator Jerome Corsi. Records of Dr. Vladimir Zelenko are being examined by Justice Department lawyers after his associate, Corsi, accidentally emailed former Mueller investigation prosecutor Aaron Zelinsky a message meant for the doctor. In response, Zelinsky, who scrutinized Corsi's behavior during the 2016 election while on special counsel Robert Mueller's team, emailed Corsi's lawyer and requested all communications sent to and received from Zelenko, according to a report by the Washington Post on Thursday. Zelinsky prosecutes coronavirus-related crimes in the U.S. attorney's office...
