Skip to comments. How high will it go? As Covid-19 death toll in U.S. blows past 60,000, there are no easy answers

When STAT first compared projected U.S. deaths from Covid-19, in early April, there seemed to be a glimmer of good news: A prominent model had just lowered its estimate for total deaths through Aug. 4 from about 100,000 to 60,000, reflecting the apparent success of three weeks of social distancing across much of the country.
On Wednesday, April 29, the country blew past 60,000, more than three months before the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation projected. (The 60,000 almost certainly undercounts Covid-19 deaths, by about 9,000.) IHME, whose model has been criticized by many epidemiologists, now says the most likely death toll on Aug. 4 will be 72,433, though it could be as low as about 60,000 (obviously impossible) and as high as 115,000.

We’ve not seen the top anywhere in the world yet. These projections are nonsense - we may be looking at the high hundreds of thousands or just a tens of thousands deaths more.
So what is the alternative plan from these f’n geniuses?
its going to do what its going to do regardless. We got the curve to flatten long enough to prepare. That’s all we can do. Now we just have to sit back and hope for the best.
keep people locked down and it’ll go higher....”allow” people to be out and about and enjoy the spring/summer weather....we’d have a better outcome....
We know deaths in the United States are highly inflated so obviously that precludes ever knowing anything close to an accurate total.
exactly...a virus is as virus....
Question 1- What is the total number of death from all causes since Jan 1 of this year until today?
Question 2 - What was the total number of death from all cause from Jan 1, 2019 until May 1, 2019?
Are there more or less people dead today then there were this time last year or is the number lower?
Let’s see. We are averaging 30,000 new cases per day with 2,000 deaths. We will get over 100,000 dead by Memorial Day. Then possibly 250,000 by Labor Day if it continues to plateau.
“So what is the alternative plan from these fn geniuses”?
Lol You’re right. They are part of the bunch who want to rule our lives.
It depends upon whether the Drs keep padding the Covid19 numbers.
Sorry, way past folks who really should keep their science writing confined to articles about grade school science fair volcanos.
The numbers are skewed now. Don’t believe them from here on out.
Everyone is adding NON-COVID deaths to the total FOR CASH!
Our country is sooooooooo CORRUPT now! It makes me sick!
Coronavirus numbers are now FAKE NEWS!
It’s still almost all in big cities, mainly east coast.
And still almost all elderly.
These numbers are, in the words of Lily von Schtup, BOOL-SHEET.
I agree. The deaths per day are very slow to drop. Almost steady in this country for 3 weeks. U.S. deaths have averaged over 1700 per day and as high as 2000 from April 11 to the end of April. A very narrow range. If it's falling it is falling very slowly.
The numbers above are for a moving 7 day average using the Wikipedia data.
Includes seniors who were refused admittance to NY Hospitals and sent BACK to their nursing homes to die.
Are the 60000+death’s tested and cofirmed coved 19 as the cause?
Not to mention as another Freeper this morning remarked: How many deaths due to regular flu have we had this year?
Yup. Compare the numbers from Florida to other NE states.
