Viewers were left in stitches as a lion-tailed macaque repeatedly slapped a giant squirrel in a fight over an enormous jackfruit on last night's episode of BBC1's Primates. The 'marvellous' moment happened during a segment about the macaques living in the Western Ghats mountain range in India. It showed how lion-tailed macaques took advantage of the Malabar giant squirrel's sense of smell to locate ripe jackfruit and steal it from them. Using a surprisingly simple technique, the macaque simply batted the squirrel repeatedly on the nose to keep it away from the food.

Millions of Americans who have been thrown out of work during the coronavirus pandemic have been unable to register for unemployment benefits since the U.S. economy entered a free fall, according to a poll released on Tuesday (April 28). The left-leaning Economic Policy Institute found in an online poll that for every 10 people who have successfully filed unemployment claims, three or four people have been unable to register and another two people have not tried to apply at a time of acute economic crisis. **SNIP** EPI's survey indicates that an additional 8.9 million to 13.9 million people have been...

Hundreds of residents are taking part, howling every night at 8 p.mIf you live in the Santa Cruz mountains, you’re no stranger to the nightly howl. Hundreds of residents are taking part, howling every night at 8 p.m. to show their support to first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s surreal actually,” explained Boulder Creek resident, Klara Murray. “We were kind of blown away by the entire thing because it seemed a little silly over social media. But, you know, when your friends are like, ‘It’s really cool, walk outside and do it.’ It was amazing.” As time has gone...

The California Rodeo Salinas has been delayed until early October. This year marks the 110th California Rodeo, but due to coronavirus it will be delayed until October 8-11 instead of its normal mid-July date. The Professional Bull Riding will take place Wednesday, October 7. The California Rodeo Salinas is one of the top 10 rodeos in the U.S. for professional rodeo contestants. The rodeo said that this was decided because the county's shelter-in-place order would likely be extended, citing Monterey County Public Health Officer Dr. Edward Moreno. The California Rodeo Salinas creates an estimated $11 million in economic impact for...

A publicly-released European Union report on disinformation campaigns related to the novel coronavirus is watered down and less detailed in describing Chinese government activity compared to an internal assessment, according to a copy of the document obtained by CyberScoop. The internal assessment from the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU’s diplomatic service, was more direct in describing Chinese efforts to manipulate public perceptions of the pandemic. The document, which also covers Russian and Iranian disinformation efforts, singled out “official Chinese sources” for making a “continued and coordinated push” to deflect blame for the virus’s spread. It pointed to reports...

SEDONA, Ariz. — Lisa Dahl scanned the horizon from the patio of one of her five restaurants, watching thick clouds cast shadows on red rock spires that formed outlines like desert skyscrapers. The restaurateur stood in the afternoon silence, a rarity at Mariposa, billed as the best fine dining in a town about two hours from the south rim of the Grand Canyon. She thought about what life was like here, on this patio, before the coronavirus. Reservation only. New Yorkers. Angelenos. Investment bankers. Tech entrepreneurs. They sipped stiff cocktails and snapped photos in front of a backdrop so picturesque...

Yes, things have taken a significant turn for the better! I snapped this yesterday at 5 PM in the Los Altos, California Safeway (San Francisco Bay Area). There was no crowd lunging for it. No wild-eyed berserkers trying to steal it away from you or take it from your basket. No knocking over little old ladies to grab it. Nope, it was just sitting there, unloved and lonely, just begging for somebody to take it home.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., told Fox News Tuesday he will not consider any additional coronavirus aid legislation unless it includes liability or litigation protections for businesses and employees seeking to come back to work. "We can't pass another bill unless we have liability protections. That's the only way we're going to ultimately begin to get past this," McConnell told "Your World with Neil Cavuto". "We have to have businesses brave enough to open up again and employees brave enough to go back to work. And I'm glad to see that some of the states are beginning to move...

Clay County Circuit Judge Michael McHaney ruled yesterday that Bailey, of Xenia, could ignore the governor’s order. While the judge’s decision only applies to Bailey, it opens the door for other opponents to do the same. During the nationally televised interview, Pritzker accused Bailey of political showboating: “This state representative was looking to gain some celebrity for himself. He took it to a local court, to a local elected judge and got the ruling that I think he knew he was going to get in that local courtroom.” The governor also painted Bailey’s backers in the courtroom — he was...

Tue Apr 28, 2020 Daniel Greenfield 96 Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is an investigative journalist and writer focusing on the radical Left and Islamic terrorism. "How do I report a non-essential business that's still open?" Mayor Eric Garcetti asks. But the real question is what sort of people want an answer to that question? Informing on your friends and neighbors used to be something that the socialists on the other side of the Iron Curtain used to do. What kind of...

President Trump warned Democrats Tuesday that he will demand “adjustments” for sanctuary cities as a condition of bailout aid for states, as both parties take increasingly partisan paths toward the next round of emergency coronavirus relief. With Democrats demanding at least $500 billion to fill state coffers drained by business shutdowns, Mr. Trump said he doesn’t want to reward mostly Democrat-controlled states “to recover 25 years of bad management.” “If it’s COVID-related, I guess we can talk about it,” the president told reporters at the White House. “But we want certain things also, including sanctuary city adjustments. We have so...

The nation's two biggest teachers unions say they would consider strikes or major protests if schools reopen without the proper safety measures in place or against the advice of medical experts — raising the possibility of yet more school disruptions. American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, previewing a reopening plan first with POLITICO, said funding is needed for a host of public health measures for schools, including personal protective equipment. Collective bargaining, strong enforcement of safety standards and protections from retaliation will be important for teachers and staff so they feel safe to speak up as schools try new...

ormer Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Tuesday that the coronavirus pandemic “would be a terrible crisis to waste” by not creating “universal health care.” Clinton, the Democratic Party nominee in the 2016 presidential election, was speaking to former Vice President Joe Biden in a virtual women’s “town hall” meeting, during which she endorsed him for president. Biden nodded in agreement as Clinton spoke about exploiting the coronavirus pandemic to bring about the left’s dream of “universal health care”: This is a high-stakes time, because of the pandemic. But this is also a really high-stakes election. And every form of...

Starting in the fall of 2016 and continuing into 2018, researchers at Columbia University in Manhattan began collecting nasal swabs from 191 children, teachers, and emergency workers, asking them to record when they sneezed or had sore throats. The point was to create a map of common respiratory viruses and their symptoms, and how long people who recovered stayed immune to each one. The research included four coronaviruses, HKU1, NL63, OC42, and C229E, which circulate widely every year but don’t get much attention because they only cause common colds. But now that a new coronavirus in the same broad family,...

The film’s director, Ruben Östlund, had formerly made ski films. As you would expect, both the scenery and the setting, the resort of Les Arcs near Mont Blanc, are stunningly beautiful. In fact, much of the film’s power comes from the contrast it draws between the glorious beauty of nature and luxurious ski vacation, and the poverty of the...
