Santa Cruz Mountain Residents Take Part in Nightly Howl
KSBW ^ | Apr 27, 2020

Hundreds of residents are taking part, howling every night at 8 p.m

If you live in the Santa Cruz mountains, you’re no stranger to the nightly howl. Hundreds of residents are taking part, howling every night at 8 p.m. to show their support to first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s surreal actually,” explained Boulder Creek resident, Klara Murray. “We were kind of blown away by the entire thing because it seemed a little silly over social media. But, you know, when your friends are like, ‘It’s really cool, walk outside and do it.’ It was amazing.”

As time has gone on, there’s another purpose behind the noise.

“It’s a very interesting thing to look forward to because it just goes to show as a community how much we are there for each other,” said Charlie Brown of Ben Lomond. “It lets everybody know we’re still thinking of you. Yeah, we’re tired of it too, I’m tired of it too. (But) I hear people all the way on the ridge line. A half a mile up there, I hear people.”

“One of our friend’s daughter yelled out tater tots really loud and sometimes she yodels which is the most adorable thing,” laughed Murray.

Some say it’s a blessing in disguise.

“So many people are struggling with being alone right now and being quarantined. So, this is that one moment where can hear that neighbor down the street, they know who it is, and they feel connected. It’s a wonderful thing,” said Boulder Creek resident, Kevin Foster.

During an ever-changing time, some say one thing for now is certain.

“It’s nice for us to kind of sit out here and enjoy that community feel like, okay, we’re still all in this, we’re doing okay and we’ll get out of this soon,” said Murray.

The Santa Cruz mountain area is a very special place. Some very affordable (relatively) and excellent Pinot Noir there.

“I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this any more!”
Just seems appropriate...

I used to go to Bonnie Doon Winery back when their tasting room was up in the Santa Cruz Mountains with the winery, instead of being down in town in Santa Cruz proper, where the tasting room is now. Always said they were a bunch of hippies up in the mountains who make good wine. They hired Ralph Steadman to do a good bit of their label art; he did the art for Hunter Thompson’s articles in Rolling Stone back in the day.

This story kinda validates and ties in with my assessment of Bonnie Doon.

Never heard any of it. We’re well southeast.
Boulder Creek is a bit edgy.

I’m usually asleep by 8.

People around here are howling every night at 8:00pm.

It is not a "show of support for health care workers" either. It is a "I'm mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore" signal.

Ultimately futile, but still quite visible. We get occasional fireworks too. Quite the show some nights.

The Karens have noticed and are starting to get upset about it. They want everybody to just shut up now and go back inside.

It’s just people trying to have some fun and distract themselves.

What harm does it do?
