If you need a reason to get out of the house and see a show in our own backyard, tonight’s the night. A pink supermoon will rise tonight, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. The moon will also be the closest to the Earth at about 221,772 miles away, Space.com said. Not only does it have a colorful name, but it also is a supermoon and the first full moon of spring. You will be able to see it just after sunset with it making its peak illumination at 10:35 p.m. EDT, according to the almanac. But the show you...

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University said Tuesday they have developed a COVID-19 vaccine candidate, as nearly 1.4 million cases of the virus have been confirmed across the world. Matthias Schnell, director of the Jefferson Vaccine Center in Philadelphia, said Coravax is made from part of the current coronavirus, which is combined with another proven vaccine that serves as a carrier. “The benefit is that the ‘carrier’ vaccine has already been rigorously tested, and shown to be safe and effective," Schnell said. Schnell notes manufacturing plants around the world already have the technological know-how to produce large quantities of the carrier...

A federal judge has rejected a bid by the suspect in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting to have the death penalty removed as a potential sentencing option. Lawyers for Robert Bowers argued that capital punishment violates the Fifth Amendment’s due process clause and the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Senior District Judge Donetta W. Ambrose noted in a trio of rulings Monday that courts have consistently upheld the constitutionality of the death penalty.

As House Democrats set to work on the next round of economic relief legislation, they face a more urgent choice than they seem to realize. If they send that bill to President Trump without measures guaranteeing voting rights during the pandemic, they are signing a death warrant for the 2020 election. A vision of the future sits before us in Wisconsin. The coronavirus has devastated in-person voting. Due to a shortage of poll volunteers willing to risk their lives, 175 of Milwaukee’s 180 voting locations will be closed. Voting clerks have run short of envelopes needed to process the surge...

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Tuesday signed an executive order ensuring that all immigrants and refugees — including illegal aliens — are eligible to receive the city’s coronavirus benefits. The city of Chicago has launched several programs in order to help residents cope with the financial challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Such initiatives include a coronavirus Housing Assistance Grant program, an online resources program for students through the city’s public schools, and a $100 million Chicago Small Business Resiliency Fund to help small businesses that are struggling.

The Republican Party is willing to get people killed to immunize itself from the threat of democratic accountability. Whatever happens in Wisconsin’s primary and State Supreme Court elections Tuesday, that should be the headline. **SNIP** By Monday, it was clear that Wisconsin had no means of holding a free and fair election this week. A majority of the state’s poll workers had announced that they were not willing to jeopardize their lives by greeting continuous streams of voters for hours on end (in often tightly packed and poorly ventilated quarters). In Milwaukee, election officials revealed that they only had enough...

[Catholic Caucus] Archbishop Cancels Easter Cupich tells Catholics to make 'Spiritual Communion' CHICAGO (ChurchMilitant.com) - Chicago's Cdl. Blase Cupich is dispensing Catholics in his archdiocese from fulfilling their Easter duty owing to fear of spreading the Wuhan virus. In the first of the three-part decree issued on Sunday, Cupich mandated "that the obligation to receive Holy Communion during the Easter season is removed this year due to the impossibility of attendance by the People of God at celebration of Holy Mass." The Easter duty is one of the precepts of the Church as related in paragraph 2042 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It obliges all Catholics...

CORAOPOLIS, Pa. — A local family decided to have their father try the anti-malaria drug showing promise as a possible treatment for COVID-19. Channel 11 first told you about 76-year-old Bob Schrecengost last week, when another patient at his nursing home, Caring Heights Community Care and Rehab Center in Coraopolis, tested positive for COVID-19. This weekend, his family got the news that he, too, tested positive. "It was extremely difficult for all of us in my house to hear the news,” said his daughter, Lisa Smarra. Smarra visits her dad outside his window at Caring Heights every day. He has...

    1) Data shows a dramatic spike in “Influenza Like Illness” in certain states as early as November of 2019; 2) A number of states appear to have already experienced an ILI and made it through to a more stable ILI footing for this time of year; 3) The US Military participated in the 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan, China between October 18 and October 27 of 2019. Their chartered flights arrive and depart from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport; 4) Washington is one of the earliest states to show a spike in ILI, corresponding with the incubation period should the virus...

Osama bin Laden. Anwar al-Awlaki. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi— and Robert Spencer? BY ROBERT SPENCER 2020-04-06T14:06:34 If we all agree to ignore the passages in the Qur’an that enjoin believers to be violent toward non-Muslims, they’ll go away, right? If we deny that such passages even exist, jihadis will cease acting upon them, won’t they? That appears to be the view of Nathan Spannaus, a hustling young academic (or academic hustler, if you prefer) who identifies himself on Twitter as a “Middle East and Islamic Studies Ph.D” and author of a book called Preserving Islamic Tradition. Writing in the NYU Law...

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- New Yorkers who die at home are not being tested for COVID-19, even if they had flu- or coronavirus-like symptoms at the time of death, which is likely leading to a massive underreporting of COVID-19 fatalities. ..... A spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office told Gothamist that an additional 200 people are dying at home each day, in addition to the 20 to 25 people that died at home each day before the pandemic.

Things are getting serious. The Coronavirus will pass but losing our freedom is something that we will regret. The criminals are being released from prison and being replaced with peaceful, law-abiding citizens who dare go outside. A 33-year-old Colorado man was handcuffed in front of his wife and 6-year-old daughter for allegedly violating a social distancing order. 33-year-old Matt Mooney said his young daughter was terrified the police were going to arrest him after the cops swarmed his family. The father reassured his daughter they were doing nothing wrong by playing tee-ball in the park, however, the police cuffed him...

While it has a face only an astrogeologist could love, that rubble could be as old as the solar system itself. Bennu is also number two on the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard scale, meaning there’s a (slight) chance it could impact Earth very violently in around 150 years. And now, Bennu has the distinction of being the subject of the highest resolution mosaic ever made of any planetary body. The image was collected by NASA’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft between March 7th and April 19th, 2019. At the time, it was about 2 to 3 miles from the surface of the 1,600...
