Since we're Americans, we don't just sit around in a panic. We meet crisis head on, and laugh in the face of adversity. And beside, we could use a little humor these days. I'll give a try and folks can chime in where appropriate. * From now on, folks watching the Walking Dead will take notes. * Fighting climate change is on hold, but we could sure use a little global warning right about now to hepl kill this bug. * a run on toilet paper? WEll, if you run out of food, remember that it doesn't taste like chicken....

The leader of a libertarian-leaning tech group is stepping down as its president after tweeting that it would be “poetic justice” if President Donald Trump died from the coronavirus, the group confirmed Friday. Berin Szóka, president of Washington-based think tank TechFreedom, will be taking an indefinite sabbatical to write a book on tech policy, as first reported by POLITICO earlier Friday. Shane Tews, a longtime member of the group's board, will lead the organization in his stead. The move deals a blow to one of the tech industry’s staunchest defenders in Washington, where Szóka has served as its combative and...

The US-Mexico border could be shut down to contain the coronavirus outbreak - by Mexico, health officials said. Mexico, where there are 26 confirmed cases, is preparing to ban non-essential services like classes and seminars this weekend to prevent spread, among other measures. The US, where there 2,174 cases and 47 deaths, is a danger to the county, its health minister said Friday. “If it were technically necessary to consider mechanisms of restriction or stronger surveillance we would have to take into account not that Mexico would bring the virus to the United States, rather that the United States could...

[Catholic Caucus] Abp. Viganò: Open wide the doors to Christ - and His Churches What is at stake is not only public health but the salvation of souls, writes Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò. March 14, 2020 (LifeSiteNews) – What we are witnessing in these hours is dramatic — certainly throughout Italy, but in a tragically exemplary way, in Rome, the heart of Catholicism. The scenario is all the more disconcerting as what is at stake is not only public health but the salvation of souls — and for some time now we, as Pastors, have stopped inflaming the hearts of...

A CNN host once asked the great psychologist Martin Seligman to describe in one word the state of his profession. He replied, “Good.” Underwhelmed, the host allowed him two words. His answer? “Not good.” American socialists must know the feeling. Here’s their “good”: An affirmed socialist could get the Democrats’ nod for president this year. Should he fail, another might succeed before long. The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) boast a swelling class of officeholders, 43 having been elected in the 2018 midterms alone. DSA membership totals about 60,000 ignoramuses, up from a reported 25,000 two years ago. What’s “not...

Facing a potentially historic vote on whether to legalize medical marijuana in Kentucky, Republican lawmaker John Schickel is conflicted. A retired law enforcement officer, Schickel once steadfastly opposed medical cannabis, but his stance has softened. Now he says he’s approaching the question with an open mind. […] Schickel’s dilemma stands as yet another sign that views about marijuana are changing across the South, where efforts to legalize it have long been stymied by Bible Belt politics. While medical cannabis is legal now in 33 states, including Arkansas, Louisiana and Florida, other Southern states remain among the holdouts. Whether wavering resistance...

There's a virus threatening the health of America, all right. But it's not new, not from a foreign country and it's not the coronavirus. The virus Americans need to fear the most today is the political left. The Pelosi-Schumer Democrats and their permanently distraught soulmates in the Trump-hating liberal mainstream media are trying harder than ever to hurt the president at every turn. The president has been doing his best to protect us from the coronavirus without sowing panic in the streets and in the toilet paper aisle at Costco. He acted decisively in late January when he shut down...

Dear Secretary Wolf, Secretary Mnuchin, Secretary Azar, and Administrator Gaynor:I have determined that the ongoing Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is of sufficient severity and magnitude to warrant an emergency determination under section 501(b) of the Robert T. Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, 42 U.S.C. 5121-5207 (the “Stafford Actâ€).My decision to make this determination pursuant to section 501(b) of the Stafford Act is based on the fact that our entire country is now facing a significant public health emergency.  The World Health Organization has officially declared that we are in the midst of a global pandemic. As of...

A Trump administration rule that would have tightened work requirements for food stamps was blocked by a federal judge on Friday, who cited the rapidly spreading coronavirus in her decision. D.C. District Court Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell granted a preliminary injunction blocking the new rule, which government estimates predicted would kick as many as 700,000 Americans off of food stamps. “Especially now, as a global pandemic poses widespread health risks, guaranteeing that government officials at both the federal and state levels have flexibility to address the nutritional needs of residents and ensure their well-being through programs like SNAP, is...

Empty freezers. Cleaned out shelves. Aisles totally empty, as if it were a going out of business sale. The chicken thighs, the frozen broccoli, the toilet paper are all feared missing. It’s slim pickings these days at supermarkets and convenience stores across the region as people are jamming into aisles to stock up on food, household goods, and cleaning supplies amid rising concerns they’ll be forced to self-quarantine for an extended period of time. As cases of the coronavirus continue to spread, industry experts promise that the virus won’t lead to a break in the food supply chain -- but...

It’s true that the coronavirus is causing upheaval around the world. Whole countries are being quarantined. Massive sports events are being canceled. Schools are being closed. The stock markets are collapsing. But this is a mere tremor compared to what is coming. One day the whole earth will be shaken. As the author of Hebrews tells us, the Lord “has promised, ‘Once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.’ The words ‘once more’ indicate the removing of what can be shaken—that is, created things—so that what cannot be shaken may remain” (Hebrews 12:26-27). Everything will...

Rose Garden 3:30 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you very much, everyone. Thank you. Thank you. A beautiful day in the Rose Garden. Appreciate everybody being here. Today, I’d like to provide an update to the American people on several decisive new actions we’re taking in our very vigilant effort to combat and ultimately defeat the coronavirus. We’ve been working very hard on this. We’ve made tremendous progress. When you compare what we’ve done to other areas of the world, it’s pretty incredible. A lot of that had to do with the early designation and the closing of the borders....
