The consequences of the coronavirus outbreak have affected one of the most remote scientific expeditions on the planet: the research ship Polarstern, which is carrying hundreds of researchers as it drifts in sea ice near the North Pole. Some scientists have been able to come and go by aircraft, which can land on an ice runway near the ship. But a scientific experiment planned for this month, which would have involved an aircraft taking atmospheric measurements around the ship, was postponed after a team member tested positive for the novel coronavirus. "One member of a team for scientific flights with...

After two days of debate, the House of Representatives appears poised to vote on an emergency relief bill for Americans affected by the coronavirus outbreak. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin almost a dozen times on Thursday to try and forge an agreement. In her address on Friday, Pelosi announced that today they "are passing a bill" that puts families first, but she did not say whether or not they had earned that Republican support. The three most important parts of the bill are "testing, testing, testing," Pelosi explained, facilitating free coronavirus testing for anyone who...

A team of Canadian scientists has successfully isolated and grown copies of the coronavirus — bringing the world a step closer to finding a vaccine to fight the deadly illness. Researchers from the Sunnybrook Research Institute, the University of Toronto, and McMaster University were able to isolate and replicate the virus in a lab using samples taken from two Canadian patients. The lab-grown copies will now be able to help scientists study the pathogen to develop better diagnostic testing, treatments, vaccines, and gain a better understanding of its biology, the team said in a statement.

The most interesting observation I made with the President's announcement today was the legion of private sector business leaders he had there to discuss their ideas and cooperation to overcome this disease. Seems historically politicians have 'so & so ' from the department of this or that representing government aid. I am of the persuasion using the private sector will greatly decrease the danger of this scourge.

...My first encounter with a global pandemic came in October 1957, when I spent a week in my college infirmary with a case of the H2N2 virus, known at the time by the politically incorrect name of “Asian flu.” My fever spiked to 105, and I was sicker than I’d ever been. The infirmary quickly filled with other cases, though some ailing students toughed it out in their dorm rooms with aspirin and orange juice. The college itself did not close, and the surrounding town did not impose restrictions on public gatherings. The day that I was discharged from the...

There is no doubt that the Coronavirus/Wuhan Virus/Wutang Clan virus or whatever you want or allowed by our media betters to call it, poses a real threat. It will spread, people will manifest symptoms and some will die. As of now, by and large, those who are dying, as with most outbreaks, are the most vulnerable amongst us. That could change and this could be the equivalent of the zombie apocalypse. It can be additionally stated with some certainty, that the Coronavirus has been an emerging issue since November of 2019. Many here and some in the media (named Tucker)...

As more people follow the advice of global health leaders and practice social distancing in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, small businesses are going to suffer. “This is probably one of the most critical times particularly to support our small business community,” said Michael Lisle, economic development coordinator for the Town of Summerville. “Small businesses tend to be the first to lose out when something like this happens. People either start shopping online or they go to the big box stores because they’re buying in bulk.” Lisle said there are still ways that consumers can shop small...

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency on Friday, the most significant move yet by the U.S. government to head off the coronavirus outbreak. Trump’s declaration came as many public and private institutions have taken action — including canceling major events, temporarily banning large gatherings, closing schools and telling people to work from home — in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled, soared, and then closed with a gain of 1,900 points after the emergency declaration. Wall Street had reeled Thursday afternoon after coronavirus fears drove the markets to their worst...

Thousands of Americans [NF: even if true, about as many as think the earth is flat] think President Donald Trump may try to cancel the 2020 election by citing the coronavirus pandemic. On the left and right, they envision him declaring a national emergency, using those newly invoked powers to suspend the November vote and extend his first term in the White House. It’s not purely paranoia. The pandemic has already canceled campaign rallies, postponed the primary election in Louisiana, and raised ideas to nix the parties’ nominating conventions. Trump, for his part, has often lied about his last election to...

Biden, 77, is the prohibitive favorite to win the Democratic presidential nomination. He's also among the most vulnerable members of the population—very old and male—when it comes to the risk of dying from the Wuhan bat plague. Few pundits thought he stood a chance in the Democratic primary, given his bumbling campaign, incoherent message, and frequently malfunctioning brain. Democratic voters had other ideas, mostly due to their diehard commitment to male superiority. Members of the mainstream media and other liberal pundits have no choice now but to praise Biden as the savior of the republic. For many, this will involve...

For once, the conversation over closing the US-Mexico border is being driven b Mexican health officials who say they are considering shutting out Americans to keep coronavirus out of their country.
