The most important question raised in the Democratic Party’s South Carolina debate did not concern such foolish measures as Medicare-for-All, reparations for slavery, or Joe Biden’s imbecilic exaggeration about murder statistics (150 million murders in the USA? Really?). The key issue of the day was only mentioned in passing, by Michael Bloomberg, of all people, and it was immediately set aside… and of course, he got it wrong. Michael Bloomberg tried to make a case for his nomination, on the grounds of his own extensive business experience… and his own long and happy collaboration with Mainland China. He talked about...

[Barf Alert] Archbishop tells Minnesota priests not to vote in primary Recommendation considers privacy, partisanship issues On the eve of Ash Wednesday, St. Paul-Minneapolis Archbishop Bernard Hebda wrote to his priests with a rather surprising suggestion for something to abstain from: voting in the state's upcoming primary on Super Tuesday. New for Lent: Daily reflections on food, faith and climate from NCR's EarthBeat. Read now> The recommendation seems motivated by concerns about voter privacy in the state's new primary system and the appearance of partisanship if priests' party affiliation were to be made public. While canon lawyers told NCR the...

A long-developing proxy clash in Syria between Russia and Turkey is “very much moving into crisis mode,” a senior American diplomat said amid reports that Turkish troops were attacked in an airstrike. “Oh my gosh,” Kay Bailey Hutchison, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, exclaimed Thursday when she learned from journalists that more than 20 Turkish service members reportedly have been killed. “Let me say this because I just learned this: Of course, everything is on the table. This is a new development. This is a big development.” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called an emergency meeting of his national security...

I am in mourning. Although I should be retiring "high on the hog," so to speak, my heart breaks for students who have no clue and have been spoon-fed so much that they do not know basic multiplicaiton facts, choose not tp follow rules, and cannot follow simple directions. It's as though they expect all to be given to them. And if they do not get their way, I am to blame.

In Estonia, the first case of a person being infected with the novel coronavirus has been found, stated Estonian Social Affairs Minister Tanel Kiik on Thursday, February 27, as cited by Estonian public broadcaster ERR. Kiik broke the news on ETV magazine show Terevisioon and unveiled that the affected individual is an Iranian national resident in Estonia, who had arrived in Estonia by bus from Riga, Latvia. «The passengers on the [same] bus are currently being identified and contacted», Estonian Social Affairs Minister Kiik explained, yet he could not say how many people had been on the bus and had...

As fears about the spread of the novel coronavirus continue to grow, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., introduced legislation on Thursday aimed at securing America's medical supply chain. Discussing the bill entitled "The Medical Supply Chain Security Act," on "Tucker Carlson Tonight," Hawley said the proposal would amend the 1938 Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act to allow the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to monitor medical device shortages with greater accuracy and efficiency. ... "We’re looking at potential shortages of up to 150 commonly prescribed antibiotics and anti-viral medications," Hawley explained. "That’s bad. ... ...

A federal appeals court on Wednesday ruled that internet giants like Google and Facebook can censor content on their platforms, rebuking arguments from conservatives who claim the tech companies violate users' First Amendment rights by removing certain messages or videos. With its unanimous opinion, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals became the latest court to dismiss arguments that platforms like YouTube can be sued under the First Amendment for decisions on content moderation. "Despite YouTube’s ubiquity and its role as a public-facing platform, it remains a private forum, not a public forum subject to judicial scrutiny under the First...

There is more to politics than the barking for TV. Listen for what you don’t hear, think of what’s being avoided, look for the negative space between the dancers. The silence that tells you the story Like that dog that didn’t bark at Joe Biden over his lie about Nelson Mandela. Pandering to black voters is what white Democrats do for a living. The party has been completely consumed by identity and grievance politics. Without black votes, there is no Democratic Party. And such pandering is evidence that white Democrats who play the game hold their most loyal, core constituency...

For nearly 20 years as an up and coming politician, Bernie Sanders supported ideas on what causes cancer outside of the mainstream, such as sexual inactivity as a cause of breast cancer. "The manner in which you bring up your daughter with regard to sexual attitudes may very well determine whether or not she will develop breast cancer, among other things," Sanders wrote in an essay headlined "Cancer, Disease and Society" in 1969. "How much guilt, nervousness have you imbued in your daughter with regard to sex?" The essay, published in The Vermont Freeman and previously reported, extensively and approvingly...

I don't come close to understanding how this would work, or if it's even possible I only got an undergraduate degree in general biology (education, actually). But there seem to be three things about Coronavirus which are astounding, although I'm suspicious whether the third is true. 1. Many cold viruses are actually simply less virulent forms of coronavirus. 2. The novel coronavirus doesn't affect children nearly as bad as the elderly. 3. Some people get the novel coronavirus again, and it's very deadly the 2nd time. What if the coronavirus somehow uses the human immune reaction against itself, so that...

Out of 22 classic and modern movies The Omen and The Exorcist are the horrors British people find the scariest – and YouGov Profiles reveals some spooky facts about horror fans The number of horror movies released each year has increased hugely since the 1930s, at least doubling since the 1960s. 2007 in particular was a golden year for horror – over 100 million tickets sold led to the genre taking a 7% market share. Coupled with the proliferation in number, horror movies have become increasingly violent, graphic and explicit. The harrowing shower scene in Psycho (1960) looked mild by...

The pet dog of a coronavirus patient in Hong Kong has been found to have a “low level” of the virus, the Hong Kong government said early Friday. The dog tested “weak positive” for the coronavirus, the city’s agricultural and fisheries department said in a statement, without giving further details. Officials will carry out further tests to confirm whether the dog has really been infected with the disease, or if it was a result of environmental contamination of its mouth and nose. Much is still not known about the virus that is spreading around the world after emerging in central...

Last month a professor at Harvard University was arrested for failing to disclose that he’d been receiving $50,000 per month from China. Dr. Charles Lieber had been recruited by something called the Thousand Talents Plan which pays foreign experts to share their knowledge at Chinese universities. However, professors are not allowed to accept research grants from federal agencies while also teaching in China. Lieber allegedly hid his China connections when applying for grants from the National Institutes of Health. Today, a professor in Tennessee has been charged for hiding similar connections to China: Anming Hu, an associate professor in...

The four concerts, scheduled to take place between Apr 11 and 19 at Seoul's Olympic Stadium, home to the 1988 Games, were expected to draw "over 200,000" BTS fans. It was "impossible at this time to predict the scale of the outbreak", it said, creating uncertainty over the movement of staff, equipment and fans, making the cancellation "unavoidable", it said.

One Walt Disney World attraction just became a little too immersive for riders. Around midday on Thursday, one of the boats used in the classic Jungle Cruise ride at the Orlando theme park started sinking while filled with passengers. Witnesses documented the mishap on social media, showing guests still standing inside the boat as the murky water slowly rose around their legs. All those on board were safely rescued, but later images captured the vessel nearly completely submerged, its canopy roof still visible and what appears to be a lone park employee on board. “Our boat on the jungle cruise...

Experts on China at a Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) panel on Thursday sounded the alarm about the Communist nation’s efforts to defeat the United States and without ever having to fire a shot. The experts on the panel, hosted by the Committee on the Present Danger: China, warned that China is laying the groundwork to replace the U.S. as the world’s superpower, which will have profound implications for Americans. China expert and author Gordon Chang said China is becoming more belligerent to the U.S. — not less — and is trying to lay the groundwork in China to blame...

The new coronavirus that is rapidly spreading around the world entered Iran “unseen and undetected,” world health officials said. Iran, which had just two cases a week ago, confirmed 245 infections as of Thursday morning, but the outbreak could be even more widespread in the country than is currently known, said Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the World Health Organization’s emergencies program. “This disease came unseen and undetected into Iran, so the extent of infection may be broader than what we may be seeing,” Ryan told reporters at a news conference at the agency’s headquarters in Geneva on Thursday....

Could the coronavirus be the magic bullet to kill off the Trump presidency? Desperate Democrats certainly hope so; they imagine the spreading disease will knock confidence and our robust economy for a loop, undermining President Trump’s best argument for reelection. Who can be surprised? The Democratic primary season has launched Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., the aging socialist from Vermont, to a position where he is likely to lead the party in a chorus of "The Internationale" while leaping off a cliff in November. Toppling the economy could save them from political oblivion. Nonetheless, even after three years of hateful and...
