Few races are as convoluted as the one in North Carolina’s Ninth Congressional District, which is — 10 months after Election Day 2018 — the last vote of the midterm elections. Experts see the race between State Senator Dan Bishop, a Republican, and the entrepreneur Dan McCready, a Democrat, as a test of President Trump’s clout in suburban areas.

Republican North Carolina state Sen. Dan Bishop held a narrow lead in a pivotal special U.S. House election that will not only decide the winner of a long-vacant House seat but could signal how President Trump will perform in the 2020 presidential election. With 79 percent of precincts reporting late Tuesday, Bishop led Democrat Dan McCready by just under 2,500 votes in the race to represent the GOP-leaning 9th Congressional District. Bishop was hoping a pair of visits to the district Monday by both Trump and Vice President Mike Pence would boost him to victory. Should Bishop defeat McCready, it...

Then-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe told the White House in early February 2017 that the bureau was not considering the national security adviser at the time, Michael Flynn, for a potential Logan Act prosecution over conversations with the Russian ambassador before Donald Trump was sworn in as president, government records reviewed by Fox News indicate. McCabe was referring to the rarely prosecuted 200-year-old statute that bars American citizens from engaging with a foreign government without authorization from the current U.S. government. The records also indicate that Flynn reported, on two separate occasions, in the days leading up to his White...

Seventy-eight percent of Republicans have a favorable view of the NRA, verses thirty-two percent of Democrats and forty-two percent of “unaffiliated voters.”

Arizona’s Andy Biggs will become the chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, taking over for North Carolina’s Mark Meadows. Biggs was elected by caucus members to succeed Meadows in a Tuesday meeting. The House Freedom Caucus is a conservative congressional group known for a willingness to challenge the Republican establishment, creating thorns in the side of Paul Ryan and John Boehner alike. Most in the caucus are strong supporters of President Trump. Since arriving in the House of Representatives in 2017 to represent Arizona’s Fifth congressional district, Biggs has made a name for himself as a liberty-inclined conservative willing to...

A store cashier in Tokyo been arrested on allegations of stealing the credit card information of 1,300 customers using just one tool -- his memory. A crime committed only with the help of a photographic memory would be one of Japan's more unique cases of credit card theft -- but certainly not the biggest. In 2016, a group of thieves used about 1,600 forged cards to withdraw money from 1,400 cash machines across Japan. In just over two hours, they stole $13 million.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Francis said on Tuesday he prayed that dissent from American Catholic conservatives would not lead to a schism in the Church and that he was willing to listen to critics and make corrections if necessary. But in frank comments to reporters aboard the plane returning to Rome from a trip to Africa, he said he was not afraid of a schism. Some of his critics had allowed political ideology to infiltrate religious doctrine, he said. It was the first time Francis has spoken so openly about the possibility of a schism in the...

While Cruz agreed that background checks need to be improved, he told Guttenberg and Milano that he thinks the most effective solutions focus on “the bad guys,” such as felons, fugitives and people “with serious mental illnesses that are a danger to themselves or others,” as opposed to law-abiding citizens. Throughout the meeting Tuesday, Cruz repeatedly advocated for the 2013 Grassley-Cruz amendment that failed to pass at the time and which he reintroduced this year — and repeated a claim that PolitiFact debunked in November 2017, saying that it could have prevented the Sutherland Springs shooting. The bill would allocate...

For Bishop Audo, the issue is "complicated and delicate", one that requires "extreme care". Both sides are exploiting the issues.Aleppo (AsiaNews) – The propaganda war in Syria between the Syrian government and rebel groups is one of the conflict’s many battlefronts, each side with its own regional and international patrons. MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis’ first Catholic bishop has been replaced on a mural downtown months after he was included in a list of clergymen accused of molesting children. The "Upstanders Mural" – on a wall across from the National Civil Rights Museum – is supposed to honor heroes, but after allegations of child sex abuse against the late Carroll Dozier surfaced earlier this year, the group that painted the mural decided he no longer belongs there. “I would certainly say that that would be their right to change that. And I think as time changes with people, society changes, ideas...

The trouble with too many fast-food restaurants is that they're often so close together. It's like car dealers who line up in auto malls, waiting for customers to greet each brand in turn, as if it's a wedding line. With the fast-food joints, rivals can see what the competition is doing by just looking out of the window. Which makes me wonder what the staff at McDonald's are going to be thinking next year. You see, one of McDonald's peskier rivals -- Wendy's -- just announced that it's going to start doing something that may seem a touch obvious. It's...

A record number of women are running for president in 2020, and now two women look like serious contenders for the presidential nomination — Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris, both of whom rose in the polls after strong performances in the first Democratic debate. Joe Biden is still in the lead, but Warren and Harris may be starting to chip away at one of the central conceits of the 2020 race so far: the idea that Biden has the best shot at defeating President Trump. For months now, voters have told reporters that they want to elect a woman —...

Senior district judge Marianne O. Battani sentenced Rand Paul’s attacker, one Rene Boucher, to imprisonment for 30 days. Sentencing guidelines prescribed a 21-27 month sentencing range. Recalling the severe injuries sustained by Senator Paul, one wonders how Judge Battani came up with a 30-day sentence. So did the government. The government appealed Judge Battani’s sentence to the Sixth Circuit. Yesterday the Sixth Circuit vacated Boucher’s sentence and returned the case to the district court for resentencing. Here is the introductory paragraph of the Sixth Circuit opinion (embedded below): Senator Rand Paul was mowing his lawn when he stopped to gather...
